Tech Update: Coupon Codes for Your Etsy Shop

It’s our pleasure to introduce to you to the newest tool in your Etsy shop: coupon codes! No more revised PayPal invoices! (Insert wild cheers here.) Now you can share a unique code with your buyers, fans and friends that applies a set discount to all of the items from your shop that they add to their shopping carts.

Here are the details:

  • A coupon code applies to all items listed in your shop and is not applied to shipping or sales tax. In addition, sales tax is calculated based on the discounted item price, not the full item price.
  • Wondering if you will be charged Etsy’s 3.5% transaction fee on the price after the discount? That is correct! The transaction fee charged to the seller will be based on the new, discounted item price. (More cheering!)
  • You can change the status of a coupon code at any time by visiting Your Etsy > Coupon Codes. While a code is deactivated, shoppers cannot use it at Checkout.
  • This final point is important: You cannot edit the name or percentage of a code once it has been created, as this could cause confusing problems for shoppers. If you delete a coupon code, you cannot re-use the same coupon code in the future.

 

How to create a coupon code:

  1. Go to Your Etsy > Coupon Codes (under Promote in the sidebar).
  2. Click the Create New Coupon button.
  3. Create a 5-20 character alpha-numeric code. Each code for your shop must be unique.
  4. Set the percentage of the discount. This will be the percent amount deducted from the shopper’s total for their purchase in your shop when they use the code.
  5. Set the status as active or inactive.
  6. Click Add Coupon to create the coupon code.

 

Here are a few ways you can use coupon codes:

  • Have a group sale. Get together with your Etsy Team or Etsy friends and all set up the same coupon code! Promote each other’s discount code by linking to a common tag in your item listings.
  • Reward repeat customers. Include a discount code in each of your packages to encourage repeat business.
  • Reward your fans and followers by creating special codes for each of your social networks — your Facebook fans, Twitter followers, blog readers, and mailing list subscribers. Encourage your network to promote and share the code. This will help you understand where your most engaged followers are and where you might need to pay more attention in other networks.
  • Host an event or contest — for example, sharing a favorite item or your entire shop via Facebook, Twitter, or blog post — and let your participants know a set of lucky winners will receive an exclusive discount code for use in your shop.
  • When publishing an online ad or partnering with a blog or media outlet on a feature, consider extending a discount code exclusively for their readership.
  • Use a coupon code to track offline events and promotions. For example, have a code printed on the business cards you give out at a craft fair.
  • If it works for your shop, instead of creating a custom listing for your wholesale buyers, forward them a special coupon code.
  • Host a shop-wide sale by placing a public discount code in your shop announcement, banner, profile and other public areas of your shop during the dates of your promotion. This is a great option for publicly recognized shopping holidays like Black Friday (11/26), Cyber Monday (11/29), and Boxing Day (12/26) when shoppers are searching for special promotions.

    Nevermind--I found the answer-- when the customer chooses their payment option, there is a box underneath that says "shop coupon code--Apply". This is a GREAT feature, so much easier than the refund method so many people use. THANKS!!!!!! Can't wait to try it!!!

    As much as I love coupon codes, this implementation fails. I'm not sure what goes on technically behind the scenes, but I'd love an explanation for why we can only use a code once. Every other shop software I've used lets you come back to an old code later to run the same promotion again. Or at least, change the % if you want to offer a bigger or smaller discount on the same code. Still, it's nice to finally see this come to Etsy, so thank you! A future suggestion from me would be to offer $ discounts as an option as well, for $10 OFF, 20$ OFF, etc. Section-specific codes are okay, but not customary anywhere else, so that could give Etsy an edge over everyone else who offers editable and reusable codes! And Etsy could use an edge these days. ;)

    This is a great and easy to use feature and just in time for the holidays! I've created a holiday discount code and am excited to spread the word to my email list and see how it goes. Question -- is there a way to have a code that discounts a flat dollar amount rather than a percent? I have sold some gift certificates in my shop and setting up a unique code for the certificate holder to enter would be a way easier way to redeem it rather than going through PayPal to modify balances etc.

    This is just wonderful! I added a coupon code today and offered it up for my Facebook fans. Already had a sale utilizing it! I am going to create another to email to ALL of my previous customers and maybe another for them to give to referred new customers. The only thing that would make it better - a DOLLAR AMOUNT OFF option so customers could enter a gift certificate code as the coupon code (pre-entered by me as sold)and have that gift certificate amount automatically taken off.

    I created a few coupons yesterday. I sent one to my past customers called repeatshopper and already have 2 more sales! They put the coupon code in when they are checking out. There is a new choice to click on when you are in "my etsy" called coupons. This is fantastic!! I also created coupons for my team memembers to shop at 10% off.     Great work. I would like to see a $ amount discount option also, as customers tend to respond to a $ discount more so than a percentage. Also as already mentioned by many, the idea of being able to use it only in specific sections would be good. When there are vast differences in price between sections, this makes sense.     This is a great idea to have the codes. But I have a zen cart store also which allows you to make certain sections on sale, and either have a percentage off or a certain amount. And you can make if it's a one-use per customer or multiple uses, expiration dates, etc. I think it should be like that because this seems VERY limited.     Sounds terrific!! Can someone help me out on a few of the details? 1) You can change the status of a coupon code at any time by visiting Your Etsy > Coupon Codes. While a code is deactivated, shoppers cannot use it at Checkout. My question is: Can the code be left in a ‘deactivated’ status when you don’t want to use it? 2) This final point is important: You cannot edit the name or percentage of a code once it has been created, as this could cause confusing problems for shoppers. If you delete a coupon code, you cannot re-use the same coupon code in the future. My question is: If you delete a coupon code…it can’t be re-created in the future then, the option of ‘deactivating’ the coupon status would be useful as you would be able to ‘reactivate’ that code in the future. 3) I am assuming that this ‘coupon code’ is something at is only shared with a specific buyer and not something that you would openly post…unless…you wished to offer a discount to ALL buyers. Is this correct? I am sure that most everyone got this right off the bat…so I’ll wait for you to gain you composure from all the laughter, snickers and eye rolling….but I’m sure there a few of us out there (at least me) that have the same questions.

    Hi Etsy tech team: How about setting a minimum purchase price-point to be included in the math, please. This is standard practice in the retail industry and seems to work well with my line of products for in home-shows and re-orders. Thanks so much for considering it!! (percent-off everything in my shop includes items under $5, and I prefer to only discount on orders over $20, which is the discount I do now.)

    This is awesome. It would be even better yet to have *search-able* coupon codes so our team wouldn't have the cumbersome chore of adding the coupon code tag to our individual items. By the way my shop has coupon code MMA20 for 20 percent off as do other participating members of the Mixed Media Art etsy team. : ) Also agree about having it applied to specific items. What we are doing as a work-around if there are certain items that can't be discounted the 20 percent we are marking those up until the code in inactivated.

    I am SO HAPPY with these coupon codes! Having these codes here before Christmas is HUGE help. But, I have a question, I hope someone can answer. I want to give customers 10% off their next order, therefore I was going to issue a coupon code on there packing slip. But I am not sure how to do this. Do I have to give each customer a separate coupon code or do I just use the same one for all? Thank you so much for listening to us, and for working so hard!     I love the coupon codes, but agree that a free shipping coupon code would be such a good way for me to advertise to my local friends that they don't have to pay shipping. Some people live close, but I don't see them often and if I sent them a free shipping code, it would be easier than explaining that I'll ship for free and then changing it individually each time. Is there another way to do that that I'm missing?

    I love it for the most part but I am disappointed in this feature for one reason. I had hoped to be able to offer a free shipping code for my local buyers who can pick up their order. This way they could buy from my etsy shop and use their credit cards via paypal. Now because you are only offering a % discount I cannot do this and I have to continue selling to them out of the shop for cash. Etsy loses a fee that way also. You really should come up with a way to give us a free shipping code for our local buyers/friends/family.

    Great -- I just noticed the coupon codes. Whenever I ran a sale in the past, I would just return the percentage to the buyer's PayPal account. This kinda sucked as I still paid the commission on the higher amount and PayPal took a percentage out of the buyer's refund. THANKS, ETSY, this is just GREAT. I am now going to start a Clearance Sale in my Shop.

I don't think much of my business comes from those channels, however, so I'll probably promote within the Etsy community. One seller sent me a discount code after I 'favorited' one of her items. That may be one way to go.... QUESTIONS FOR THE ETSY TEAM: I also have questions about the "requirements." Will it be possible to set conditions, such as one-time use, minimum purchase amount, etc. at some point? Thanks for adding this functionality!

    Well, I just plowed through ALL the comments and it's still not clear to me just how it works. Is there a "Coupons 101" in print somewhere that I don't know about? A step-by-step for the sellers (especially newbies like myself) to feel confident in what we're doing? If I want only one coupon code to be entered ("cannot be used with any other offer" type thing), how do I ensure that?     dear AJWforever: just read all the info myself. here's the link for step by step for you, the seller: http://help.etsy.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/349/kw/shop%20coupon%20code. and here's for your buyers:http://help.etsy.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/350/kw/shop%20coupon%20code to answer your questions as i understand them: you can activate and deactivate a coupon. therefore, you can create a coupon and state it is for a specified length of time. it would then be up to you at the end of that time period to deactivate that coupon. say you did a special for all of March, you could do: "March2011" as the coupon code and then on April 1st you simply deactivate the coupon and it cannot be used by the buyer any longer. also, i imagine if you use date specific coupons then you won't run into wanting to use that coupon name again and being unable to. again, as far as i am gathering, it IS like the shipping profiles, ready to be engaged (or rather activated and deactivated). thus you could have a coupon that was good for every odd day of the month if you want. of course, that sounds crazy tedious to de/activate every day, but i hope the example is helpful. i think this is awesome and thank you etsy for this latest addition.

Or does the system automatically know that I have deactivated that one and it just won't accept it? (I wondered if for example, they had written the code down even though it's not referenced any longer in my announcements and tried to use it after the fact... Also, I'm thinking of the instance that I'm running several promotions at the same time, perhaps.) And does the coupon field accept only one coupon code on any given sale, I hope?     I too think it would be a huge benefit to offer $ off amounts as it would be easier to redeem gift certificates. Also, there are certain items/sections in my shop that are custom and I do not want to include those in any type of discounts so being able to select the items/sections that you would like the discounts to be applied to would be HUGE!     Great, but coupons should not, by default, apply to all items in your shop. The seller needs to be able to decide, not only when to activate or deactivate the promo, but on what items to run the promo. In other words, seller should be able to restrict the use of coupon codes to specific shop sections only, or to specific items only. Come on guys, this is common sense, in today's world of sales.

    I've been using coupon codes for a while now and they are great for both bulk discounts and individual customer discounts. Now we have seen them up and working, can I add my name to the requests for more functionality. Please can we have codes for a fixed amount off, codes that apply only to certain sections of the shop, and codes that give a percentage off if the order comes to a fixed amount i.e. 20% off when you spend $20 or more. Or free shipping on orders over $30. Or 15% off body lotions. This would make Etsy fabulous.

    I would like to be able to add things to the description or to the tags etc... in batches instead of individually. If you offer a lot of items, it takes a lot of work to change the title on everything, or add a tag to every item. :) And also, a way to "undo" your previous action in case you make a mistake. I'd also like one page that shows how many times each ITEM has been favorited by someone (maybe on the "currently for sale" list.... instead of having to look at each item individually to see how many people favorited it .

    I've been using coupon codes since their inception... only one problem though... I've had several instances where I needed to discount a specific dollar amount. LIke when selling gift certificates or when doing special "voucher" deals that are so popular on blogs lately. Because the specific dollar amount option isn't available to us sellers, I've had to do little work arounds, which have actually been just confusing enough to two of my customers, that they chose to receive a refund instead and not go ahead with the purchase. Is there any plan in the works to offer a flat dollar amount for coupon codes? Sure, I can't be the only person requesting this. Thanks!

I'm worried that if I give someone a coupon code and keep that coupone code active for a long time that person can forever use that code while it is active. I saw a shop that had a "get a coupon if you like us on Facebook" but I'm not sure how that would work. You can't really limit only to those who "Like" you on your FB page if you post the code on your wall, and how do you let those who "Like" you know what the code is.     Am I missing something or shouldn't there be a way to add conditions (or as others previously called it "requirements") to the coupon codes? For example, if I add a code for free shipping on orders of $20 or more, how are you validating that that criteria has been met? Couldn't someone who has the code just use it even if their order was only $10 if there's no way to set conditions? Or is there something manual we (as the store owner) has to do to validate the coupon before checkout is complete? I'm a little confused by the details of this functionality as there doesn't seem to be any logic (from a systems standpoint) behind it. Excited to try it though.
