Today we launched an exciting feature designed to help you discover new shops.
Now when you sign in to Etsy and check out your Favorites, you’ll see a new tab called Suggested Shops. These suggestions are personalized recommendations based on your Favorites and the Favorites of Etsy members with similar taste. Suggestions are updated daily — you’ll see them change as you add more items and shops to your Favorites. Shops that have been added to your Favorites will not be suggested again.
The suggestions are generated with the help of an algorithm developed by Stefan Karpinski. Stefan — along with Jason Davis, Greg Fodor, Matt Walker and Isaac Oates — joined us in December when their company Adtuitive became a part of Etsy.
We hope you enjoy this new way to discover interesting shops! This is a first step toward a more personalized Etsy experience. We want to help surface some of the amazing items and shops that you might never come across otherwise. There’s much more to come in this area.

I wonder whether there could aslo be a way of generating an email list of suggested shops so that you could send information about new products. I went through the suggested shops and checked the sold items on many and, as is often the case on Etsy many of the shops listed already have over 1000 sales. They are great shops and I have checked many of these out already. I think this feature would be better if people were directed to shops who have fewer sales to help them get more exposure.

Great idea, I love to find new shops and this will be very helpful. But I think we should be able to interact with this tool directly...I now have five times more suggested shops than favorite shops and there is not a way to delete a shop from the list...and I will have to be more selective about the items that I place in favorites or the suggestions will become less helpful.

If you look more closely at the suggested shops, you'll that most of them are top sellers that have been featured on the front page and Etsy finds regularly. Look at the heart count of those shops. I like the idea of this feature but it just gives more exposure to the popluar shops, not the undiscovered ones:(

It is really excellent! I love it! :) Great job guys, it is really working algorithm. As far as the top sellers goes, I think it is because people have hearted them. So, since the algorithm works on what people with similar tastes to you have hearted, it makes sense that those shops get more exposure again. Anyway, I just hope that it works the other way too. Meaning, I usually heart what I really like, and that is a very similar sense of the esthetic that I do. So, if the algorithm works the other way too, that would be awesome. :)

It would beso cool to be abble to put my favorites intoo some files that I can name like I want just like we can do it on youtube in our favorite videos that we keep in our chanel. Ok, 1st you suggested people to me that I have seen every day for the last 3 years. Some of them I bought from. Many have hundreds if not thousands of feedback. Of all the people on Etsy U could suggest, you honestly could not find someone that has not been suggested to me before, either by me seeing them in the forum or actually buying from them, nor find anyone who could maybe use a little push and didn't have lots of feedback already? Also, a majority of those you suggested to me I detest and would not buy from. As a buyer I am not sure how this is helping me. After all, this is a site for both sellers and buyers isn't it, and it doesn't hurt to toss us buyers a crumb, just out of pity, or to watch us dive for it, so that we feel we are a part of this site too, and provide a tool that is actually useful.

You can bet your boots if your shop doesn't get recognized by the chosen agenda, you will never be seen by a potential buyer. At least not until some serious tweaking takes place. I prefer to do my own searches and favor the shops that are unusual not based on what other people find interesting.

good idea - but out of 20 pages of shops, only one store that I'm actually interested in buying from. Many stores that I've seen and passed over - all with huge amounts of feedback - it's a cool feature to be sure - but from the perspective of finding new, exciting and undiscovered stores, pounce seems to be better!

Nice! I just made a purchase from one of the 'suggested shops'! I do notice though, that most of the shops I checked out had hundreds, if not thousands of sales. So I don't know about the terms "little known or new"??? When I first opened mine it showed the number 20 for pages, but stopped at about the 5th page. I think it's a technical glitch of some sort.

I am with those that want to organize favorites. And be able to tell you those I am not intersted in. And I have a concern about resellers getting in there. I have friends who make components who have told me that their copy-cat competitors are showing up in their list! I am very cognizant about that sort of thing and would not want to be duped into thinking it were the real deal. But I did find a few stores that I hearted and would like to investigate further, hoping the kinks can be worked out of the system.

I realize with any new program there will be some glitches to work out but I am very confident that the Etsy team will work hard to fix them. What a dreadful and patronising idea. It is open to abuse too, and I foresee Etsy looking ahead to charge people to be featured. There is no way on God's earth this can be at all fair. Will very new Etsy shops get an equal chance to be "suggested"? What about anyone who over a period of say a month is never "suggested"? How is anyone to know if their shop or their fave shops have been "suggested"? Smacks of favouritism and needs an instant cap put on it. We complained for months and months about the faves on FP, this will go the same way. And as a cap was finally introduced on the FP faves, showing it had been abused as everyone already knew, this will go the same way. It is a Ridiculous idea.

I've been on Etsy for years (was here in beta) and don't want to gripe, really I don't. But this new 'tool' irks me. 1. This is a toy, not a tool. Etsy doesn't need more toys. It just needs to be reliable and work. 2. If you wanted to add a real tool to Etsy, I would have thought it would have been allowing us to separate or categorize our favorites. That has been something people have clamored for since the beginning. (nearly 5 years!) I know that would be of far more use to me than seeing a list of shops that I already favorite. 3. It's not that good at suggesting. Maybe it's 'cause it's new, but perhaps it's just not that smart, i.e., I heart a lot of items from individual shops even if I don't heart the whole shop. So that the 'Suggested Shops' toy shows me mainly shops whose items I heart, doesn't help me. 3b. Because I heart items over shops most times, I prefer the old suggestion tool (that one was more useful) that gave suggestions based on the favorites of people who favorited the same items as you. 4. If this is going to stay, could you add an 'add to favorites' button in the listings. Or a rating system a la Facebook's 'like' so that the same shops do not appear repeatedly. I'm not going to touch the whole 'over-promotion-of-successful-shops' thing. Not into conspiracies and can't see how 'Suggested Shops' could be abused by those sellers because the lists are computer generated. I just think that there were and are other ways that favorites as a tool, could have been made more user-friendly and cleaned up that have been suggested by the community a quadrillion times. This was not one of the ways.

As a shopper, I LOVE this! I just checked out my suggested shops and on each page I was familiar with only 1 or 2 shops listed. The rest were a GOLD MINE! Love it! I have a particular taste and sometimes I am not interested in sifting through a bunch of stuff that does not suit my taste. Bravo Etsy!

Dear Etsy, I absolutely love the bulk of the new features recently rolled out. The suggested shops feature, however, skeeves me out for the same reasons that Facebook's continually prying away privacy skeeves me out. And, unless this feature is wildly more targeted than Facebook's use of my information and insanely more targeted than Netflix's suggestions based on my prior movie ratings, I fail to see how this will be useful to me. Facebook keeps suggesting pages, ads, and more to me that I have ZERO interest in...none, zero, zip and they are getting further and further off target as time goes on. Funny since everything I keep hearing about their use of supposedly and formerly private information suggests that they should be doing a BETTER job of targeting ads, friend suggestions, etc. Nope, they suck at it. And, Netflix supposedly can accurately predict what I will think of any given movie based on my previous ratings AND supposedly can accurately choose other movies as suggestions. Really? Cuz, Netflix sucks at it. I've rated nearly 3,000 movies and they still can't come close to accurately predicting how I'll feel about a movie. For example, why keep suggesting horror films when I've made it quite clear that I REFUSE to watch them? Etsy, I want to believe that this will be a useful feature, but I am seriously doubtful....

And, having just checked my Analytics, I have had a DROP in views since this was rolled out. So, either I'm not being suggested to anyone, or I am being suggested but no one is clicking over, or I am being suggested to people that likely do NOT have interest in my shop, much like most of the shops suggested to me.

I love the little feature of "suggested shops". I doubt that I will use it much tho. #1. I usually just add hearts to other shops as a way to interconnect with other Etsy Artists, not because I am saving those shops as a favorite place to shop. It is like facebook, and twitter to me. Someone I meet, I add to favorites, someone that hearts me, I favorite, someone I do as a feature artist, I favorite their shop. So it is not really showing me what shops I would shop in, as much as people I share art in common with. Friends more like. However I do keep favorite items as things I am totally in love it. So maybe that helps to bring up other things I would love???? right now it looks pretty random. Still, a nice place to just look at what popping up there. I prefer the "pounce" button personally for shopping new stuff, or seeing who is new. ;-)

Great feature, but I agree with the other posts that a few tweaks would make it even better... *Let the user choose 'all shops' or opt to only have suggestions from shops within a range of sales that we define (ex. 500, etc.) to truly find those that are undiscovered, or ones that are huge. *Shops I added to my favorites from the suggested list are still appearing in the suggested list...I'd like them to disappear and some new ones be suggested. *Allow the user to 'add to favorites' right from the suggested list page. *Organization of favorites would be HUGELY helpful...even if it was simply sortable alphabetically or could be separated by category. This feature is great and already alot of fun to use for browsing...thank you to Etsy admin for rolling it out!

I have a question about hearts. Does the algorithm calculate views to heart ratios for items? Or is it the amount of hearts you have for your shop? I am relatively new, got started December 2009 and have 19 sells. I don't have the shop hearts that more established shops do, but my item hearts ratio is better than most. Are more etsy shoppers going to use the suggested tabs instead of seeing what has been recently listed in the categories? If so what will be the point of relisting. How do those of us who have great amazing products but are still building our infrastructure get ourselves out there if our options are being taken away? I think this program can be fun to explore but there should be something for us how are trying to get on top. We have the potential of being great; a little help would go a long ways. I see so many shops that have outstanding work but aren't going anywhere because they are being overshadowed by the big guys. I don't want to take from the success of those already doing well. They have worked hard getting to that point and deserve their success. But why don't we figure ways of helping us get more exposure too. I don't know yet if this new feature is going to help or hurt. Things have been picking up for me the last couple of weeks, It will be a pity if this feature actually slows done my ability to do well on etsy.

Is there a way to block this app? I already find having things I've marked favorites show up when I'm buying annoying and cluttery. eBay has a feature like this but it's possible to turn it off (and I did!) I hope that's true here!

You know, I'm on 6 or 7 different teams with a total of hundreds of members and probably thousands of items, and int the time I've been on etsy (since April of 2006--over 4 years now) the number of names I recognize who've been featured in a front page treasury require far less than one hand to count, and it looks as though it may well be the same with the suggestions. Who is making these decisions and what sort of algorithm is being used? A number of my teammates on various teams are wondering the same things--and there's a strong undercurrent of "oh, this is just more of the admin's faves". I think maybe a course corrention is needed.

I have to revise my opinion of this feature. The first couple of days I saw drops in my views, but since this weekend my numbers have been going up. I don't know if the suggestion button is helping but it is certianly not hurting my store. I have looked through my own personal suggestion shops and found it interesting but still prefer to do a more direct search on what I am looking for.

Meh. I was FIRST in my own suggested shops. No new (to me) shops, and think this is just the "big orange button" in disguise. Not very happy with it at all, or much else with the site for that matter. Just being honest, and I know that I am not alone with the continuing and increasing frustrations. *SIGH*

My Your Etsy should be my own space on Etsy to do with what I want to do with with whatever features are available. I don't appreciate people sticking stuff in there that I can't get rid of or manipulate. I am sick of seeing these same damn people that I can't stomach every time I press that button to look. And not only are they still there they have moved up higher on the first page of this crap. I am leaving Etsy as a buyer here shortly anyway and am happy that I am.
