Remember the magic of starting school? That vivid pack of new pencil crayons ready to be sharpened. The crisp white pages of a new notebook, full of possibility! And if you were a (school) child of the ’80s like me, perhaps you’ll fondly recall the delight of putting your prized possession — your dog-eared, well-loved sticker book — proudly, carefully into your backpack. Feeling eager to trade and show off to your school pals your amazing collection of scratch ‘n’ sniff, glow-in-the-dark or maybe even… hold your breath… puffy glitter stickers!
*Sigh!*
Today I’m delighted to present the next in The Collectors series. We’ll look at a collection that’s a blast from the past: designer Aimee Ray’s fabulous vintage stickers!
Who (are you)? Aimee Ray of littledear and dreamfollow.com
When (did you start collecting)? I started my first sticker book in 1984, on my eighth birthday.
How (many do you have)? I have no idea, probably thousands. I have more than three books from the ’80s.
What (piece would you like to add)? I love cute Japanese stickers!
What (is an interesting story behind one)? My prized giant hologram My Little Pony sticker was a mail away, I had to save up points to send off for it. I still have it in its mailer, I haven’t ever stuck it to anything.
Where (do you find them)? Everywhere! Back then there used to be specialty shops that had huge rolls and you could cut off those you wanted. I loved those places.
Where (do you keep them)? In my sticker books from the ’80s, and now they are finding their way into my scrapbooks and journals.

Why (do you love them)? It is so nostalgic and reminds me of my childhood! It’s colorful and fun.
Which (one is your favourite & why)? That would be very hard to choose, probably the aforementioned MLP hologram.
What (else do you collect)? I have a large collection of fun pens and pencils from the ’80s and ’90s, the kind with something stuck on the end. I also collect toys: My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, as well as toys from today like Blythe! I think I will never ever grow up.

Love them, Aimee! Thanks so much!
You’ll want to add Aimee’s newest book, Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection, to your own more-learning-ahead bookshelf this autumn. This artist and designer’s lovely shop is filled with handmade delights for lovers-of-whimsical-fun at any age: beautiful embroidery, patterns, sculptures, paintings, doll clothing and more. So here’s to great learnings ahead for all of us!
I’m Kristal and I just love seeing what folks are collecting. I guess I feel it tells us a little bit about what inspires them. The Collectors series, first published on my own little blog, the rikrak studio, is 11 and a half quick questions with a wonderful artist on what they’re collecting (apart from their art supplies!).
How about you? What do you collect? I’d love to hear, please post in the comments below.

Fun! I remember my best friend had a giant sticker book and I was SO jealous, because my mom thought it was silly. When I was in high school I still loved stickers and would stick them all over the inside covers of my sketchbooks. Aaaand, I still love them. I buy bunches of them and use them for everything, but mostly I give them to little kids I know, so they can have the delight of fun stickers too.

This is so funny--I still have my sticker collection as well and now that I am (ahem!) well into my thirties, I have started to actually stick these stickers onto things. Some glitter heart stickers have made their way onto some of my etsy packages! I recently used two small heart stickers on my cell phone to tell it apart from my husband's identical phone. 20 years later and they are still perfect! Who else had the skunk scratch & sniff sticker? We used to scratch it, sniff it and then scream like banshees! Good times!

I was sticker crazy, too. Living overseas as a military brat, I had the best of both worlds. American made funky scratch n' sniff, puffy, or those cool liquid-filled stickers - and neato Japanese rainbow pastel and Sanrio stickers of the late 70s/early 80s nature. I had a penpal in the US so we'd write letters and include a sticker or two each time. I kept my sticker book long after college and only recently found out my mom got rid of it when she moved. I was surprised I was so upset about a bunch of stickers in a book...but then again, those stickers represented a wonderful time in my life. =)

The 80's were the best decade ever! And collecting scratch and sniff stickers was and will always be my favorite all time hobby. I had 2 binders salvaged from when we moved at age 17, packed with stickers. I never stuck them on anything, all remain in mint conditions on original backing. About 10 years ago I started re collecting at Ebay. I have tons of extras but never seem to get time to list them. I've posted a couple of binders from my personal collection with my loose scratch and sniff stickers at Flickr (didn't get a change to take pictures of my full sheets and vintage non sniffs). If anyone wants to take a peek, here are the links to my sets: http://www.flickr.com/photos/niniaveneno/sets/72157608748694169/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/niniaveneno/sets/72157608735730107/ It was nice to read and share =o)

I was a sticker collector in the late 70's when Mrs. Grossman's sticker craze hit. The stickers in my album had to follow one rule: they had to come on a roll. I'm still a fan of the teeny tiny Japanese ones--they help me keep my identical bank cards separate (business and personal and joint accounts!) yay for stickers!

Awesome! Can I come over to play at your house? Clearly you have the best toys. You and I are the same age, so everything you collect provides me with transportation to my happy childhood. Thank you. Keep it up!
