Everyone should keep party planning, but the gates are closed for the recipients of our special party boxes — the results of the top 50 are in! We’ll contact the organizers to arrange shipping of their Etsy Craft Party boxes. We are gearing up to send party packages to almost all of Texas and as far away as Romania. Keep those events growing, however! We really want to hit a total of 10,000 Etsy Craft Party attendees. Don’t forget to join and upload photos to the Craft Party Flickr group to get a sneak peek into the Etsy Craft Party planning!
Let’s celebrate! Today, along with ReadyMade and Meetups Everywhere (and you), we’re launching Etsy Craft Party, a global initiative to energize your local community, make art together, and throw a party in your neck of the woods. We want to celebrate crafting together on June 18, 2010 (which just happens to be Etsy’s birthday) with as many celebrations across the globe as possible.
Our friends at Meetup.com, the world’s largest network of local groups, have just launched a new platform called Meetups Everywhere. It’s a powerfully simple way for the crafty community to, well, organize meetups everywhere! It’s free, new and designed to spark face-to-face gatherings around the world.
Etsy and the Craft Party sponsors (more to be announced soon!) will provide every event organizer with a free downloadable Craft Party Kit containing crafty project instructions and templates, along with tips and ideas for hosting your own party. There might even be a few fun coupons and surprises — who knows?!
But wait, there’s more!
Etsy and the party sponsors will send a giant box of Etsy promos, coupons and gift certificates, supplies, and surprises from our amazing sponsors to the top 50 locations with the most RSVPs using Meetup Everywhere. We’ll announce the top 50 on June 7, so get a move on!
How does it work?
We’ve started an umbrella Etsy Craft Party on the new and fabulous Meetups Everywhere site. From this over-arching event anyone can start an Etsy Craft Party Meetup, attend an existing Craft Party Meetup, or even step up as an organizer (if there isn’t one already). If there isn’t an Etsy Craft Party Meetup scheduled in your town yet, click Schedule a Meetup near you to get one on the map. To find a local Meetup, just search for your town on the Etsy Meetup map and click I’m interested. That will let others know that you’ll be there on June 18, and together you can decide what project(s) to make, what snacks to nibble on, and what your individual Craft Party will be like.
Then, drop some ideas for a location and activity for the Meetup in the comment box to help folks get ideas flowing on where to meet. If your Craft Party Meetup doesn’t have an organizer, you should consider stepping up. This will enable you to set the location, change the time, and to curate comments and guests.
FAQs
Can anyone be involved? I don’t live in the U.S. Can I still participate?
Yes! Craft Party is all about connecting with your local art, craft, and design community to celebrate creativity, no matter where in the world you live.
Do I have to have an Etsy account to join in the fun?
No! Anyone can join, start or organize an Etsy Craft Party Meetup. We just want you to have fun and make things together.
Do I have to have an Meetup account to join in the fun?
No, you can RSVP with your Facebook sign-in, if you don’t have a Meetup account. If you don’t have a Facebook account or a Meetup account, you’ll need one or the other to RSVP and/or step up as an organizer for a Craft Party. It’s free and easy to sign up, don’t worry!
Does the event need a organizer?
Not at first, however, in order to receive a package from Etsy, your event should have a organizer. (We need someone to send the package to!)
Can we change the time of the event?
Yes. The event organizer can change the time and set the location of the event.
Can I add a new Meetup to the map, even if my town already has one?
Go for it. If the current Meetup is too far away, feel free to schedule another.
Can we have the party even if we don’t make it to the top 50 locations?
Yes, please do! We encourage you to organize your party and have a blast! You might have so much fun that this will become a regular event in your city. (We hope so.)
Does using the Meetup Everywhere tool cost money?
Nope. The Meetup Everywhere site is free and creating a Meetup.com account is free. You might want to pitch in for refreshments and party supplies. More ideas for how to throw a craft party on the cheap are coming soon.
What craft project should we make at our Craft Party?
That is up to you to decide. With some help from our friends at ReadyMade, we’re going to be offering a download or two with ideas for inexpensive party crafts that are fun in a group setting. Also, be sure to browse the crafty how-to’s on Etsy’s blog for inspiration and instructions.

I have a real problem with promoting Etsy like this. At our expense to get more shop owners to be hyped up about crafting and selling here. Why doesn't E promote instead of us having to do all the work? I guess it's the new business way.

Ironically, our team has been throwing Craft Parties... sort of. One is the Craft Buffet (art/craft/supply swap) and the other is a monthly diy class called Sweet DIY. And, we also do biweekly Craft Cram sessions where we get together and craft for like 3 hours at a time. Yea for craft parties!

I love this idea! I'm definitely going to try and set one up in my area- and if artists aren't interested- I'll go to another venue which has people attending! I'll search local artists, and convo them to see if they'd be interested :D

I'm trying to plan with some other sellers in the area and we would love to celebrate he Etsy Birthday organizing a MeetUp in which promoting Etsy and local etsy sellers, but it would be pratically impossible for most of us to do it on the 18th. Instead, on the 20th, we would already have a wodnerful location and many volunteers...

A small question... many of my participants are people who dont have any facebook account or not using computer. I have a sign on the door of my shop for this meetup so many of my customers and students will be showing up. How this will be shown and calculated then? (I've witnessed a few friends and coworkers have problems with this firsthand) Our group is so close to making it into the top 50! It doesn't seem quite fair.
