Most of my attempts at batik, tie dye and other such crafts end with scrubbing the pigment from beneath my torn fingernails (it gets down to the stump!), lots of broken rubber bands and a wet, purple floor. (My Etsy lab coat is a sad testament to my inability. What was meant to be inventive gray tie dye is, instead, almost a trench coat. All black, folks.) As such, I haunt Etsy’s Categories in search of the wispy silks, conjoined circles and flowing constellations that make up shibori. The fluid patterns — like swirling cappuccino foam! — achieved by blocking off negative space and saturating cloth with dye, results in an infinite variety of cosmic vestments. Read up on shibori’s storied process here and enjoy the view.

The only thing I seem to have success with dyeing is paper by using black teas. Shrug. My mom got a book at the library once I long time ago about dyeing cloth with natural elements and things found in nature. I thought it was fascinating!

Beautiful! I love the Horizons silks scarf that you featured. Grey and yellow look so great together. As far as dying, I've only tried one project, and it worked out pretty well, although it was definitely a challenge and a huge mess. I ended up successfully making some pretty batik tapestries that hung on my apartment walls in college for three years. I still have them actually. Maybe I should dig them out and hang them somewhere. I mean, especially since dyed things are so trendy these days :) Jeanne

I love hand-dyed fabric of all sorts...I love the subtleties involved. Take heart, Alison--tie-dying is so much easier these days. I know, because I've made it a project several times with my 8 year old son and his friends. The trick is to wet the item, tie it up the way you want, and administer the dye through plastic dye bottles that have a small opening at the top. There are kits at stores like Michael's that make is SO easy, and the results are both great and unique each time!!

Dyeing is amazingly simple. It's fun and rewarding, I dye most of the wool I use. My days tie dyeing as a teenager helped tremendously when I started dyeing wool. You just need to learn how to fix the dye right, adn the rest is alchemy. Soda ash for cotton, and plant based fibers. Vinegar or citric acid crystals for acid dyes....not scary, a weak aecetic dye used for protein fibers. Lots can be learned visiting the amazing Dharma trading website! I recommend checking out there how-to process pages.

You showcased some beautiful items. Thanks you. As to your dying skills... I was recently was working in a the Craft Shop at UW Madison doing some metal smithing when I witnessed an interesting class that was in progress. It was a silk scarf dying class. I was rather surprised to learn that they were using tissue paper to dye the scarves. They laid the silk on a board and then placed the tissue paper on top. I don't know the whole process, but it looked easier than batik or even tie tying. Don't give up the dream of dying fabric there may be a method that works for you.

Shibori fabric dyeing is one of my passions! There are some fascinating traditional and contemporary techniques that anyone who loves fabric will want to try. I highly recommend reading Yoshiko Wada's books on the subject. There's plenty of history, photos and how-tos. I re-read them frequently and show them off to my shibori students: http://www.amazon.com/Memory-Cloth-Yoshiko-Iwamoto-Wada/dp/477002777X

Love Love LOVE it!!! I can't stop myself dyeing anything and everything - and then when my kids get stains on theirs, I dye them again! Can't say I have a favorite technique at the moment. There are so many different ways to tie dye, and to dye without tying, and I go through phases where I'll use one technique for a while and then when I feel ready, move on to other ideas, patterns, and colorsets. Great for summer, but fantastic year-round - on clothing, bedclothes (I LOVE doing bedding!), scarves, cloth table napkins (I have a few of those from time to time), tote bags, even yarmulkes! Even more fun dyeing things to someone else's specs. :-)
