Two-Month Roadmap: March and April

I am happy to present our first two-month roadmap. Our goal is to give everyone better insight into what we’re building. We’ll release four more roadmaps in 2010: May 1, July 1, September 1, and November 1.

In lieu of fine print at the end, here are some caveats up front.

  • We’re sharing things we are confident we can complete inside the next two months. We won’t include precise dates for specific features in the roadmap.
  • There are things we’re working on that aren’t on the list. This can be for two reasons: to retain an element of surprise, or because a project is large and long, and while we’re working on it full time right now, it won’t be ready until later.
  • Many times we’ll show a preview of a feature before it launches, to get your feedback and input. We’re building the framework to make this happen (A/B testing and a place to see works in progress).
  • This document is not meant to provide the details about a new feature. Such details will be presented via dedicated blog and Forum posts. So, please view this as a table of contents.

Okay, on to the matter at hand.

Design

Starting today, we’re taking the first steps towards widening the site and cleaning up the design. This project will touch every single page on Etsy.

The very first step is to make a header that works at both 760px (the current width) and 980px (the wider site we’re moving towards). This is the header that we just released, which you can read more about and discuss in this Forum thread. There aren’t any 980px wide pages yet — these are on their way.

Our general goal when first widening a page is to tweak the design, while keeping the functionality largely the same. Why? Well, there’s a lot more to widening a page than meets the eye. For example, we’re properly templating the pages and getting them ready to work in multiple languages.

Improving how things work will come quickly on the heels of making everything wider. Feel free to discuss the changes to the Etsy header in this Forum thread.

Checkout

As I mentioned in a previous blog post, we’re going to require payment for an item before marking it as sold on Etsy. To do this, we’re migrating to a new payments platform at PayPal called Express Checkout (EC). 

The biggest change is that a buyer will go to PayPal and authorize the payment, then come back to Etsy in order to actually complete the transaction. For more info, see this flowchart on PayPal’s info page.

If you shop on other sites with PayPal, you’re probably used to this, because it’s how most other sites do it.

Our ideal Checkout is to have a single payment cover all purchases, even those from multiple sellers. This is on the horizon, as PayPal readies their split payments feature for Express Checkout.

Marketplace Integrity

We’re going to improve how flagging works, and allow for the flagging of shops. This is part of our overall mission to better handle shops in violation of our terms of service.

Behind the scenes, we’re working on a handful of monitoring tools that will help us identify everything from 419 scammers to resellers to sock puppet accounts.

Support

We’re in the process of doubling the size of our Support team, from 10 to 20 people. We are getting the first five folks situated and will be hiring another five shortly. Our goal is to have enough people such that all emails can be answered within two hours.

We’ll also begin to offer real-time support: first via online chat, and then on the phone. Phone support will likely be just beyond the next two months, in June. You’ll be hearing much more about this shortly.

Treasury

We’re rebuilding the Treasury outside of Flash, which means everyone will be able to have their own Treasury list. This feature will first launch in a beta called Treasury East. After we get feedback on this, we’ll work towards replacing the main Treasury.

We hope to reuse the backend infrastructure for the Treasury to provide a number of improvements anywhere there’s a list of items: your Favorites, purchases, sales, etc. All of these lists should be sortable (for example, within folders) and searchable. The timing of these improvements depends on our progress with the Lists’ infrastructure, which begins with the Treasury.

Personalization

We have heaps of data about what people like on Etsy. We’re analyzing this to help buyers discover other things they might like. Our first effort on this front will be a Suggestions tab, added to the Favorites section of Your Etsy.

Once this functionality is coupled with Lists we can start to move away from Admin-curated home pages, as well as surface items and Lists we think you’ll like on a personalized home page.

Cookies

A cookie is a small token we place on your browser that remembers who you are on Etsy. Previously, every time you closed your browser, you’d have to sign back in again the next time you visited Etsy. 

We recently improved this, allowing people to stay signed in for a single day. We’re taking this one step further, so that you’ll be able to stay signed in for a longer period of time. Important (and more secure) site features — like viewing billing information or changing your password — will require re-authentication.

One nice long-term benefit of this is a personalized home page. You’ll notice that on other sites like Amazon, they remember who you are for the sake of suggesting items. When you go to check out, they ask you to sign in again.

Search

We’re speeding up search: both the time it takes to return results, and the time it takes to index the items. (An item needs to be indexed before it will show up in search results.)

We’ll be posting our observations on the Relevancy Thursday tests we performed last month and talking with everyone about possible next steps. We’re going to proceed a bit cautiously here, since it has such a strong impact on the buying experience.

API

We’re adding OAuth to our API. This is a big step forward for us, and it’s the premise for hundreds of huge improvements to Etsy. Why? Because it empowers outside developers to build more powerful apps — apps that can write data to Etsy.

Initially, we will support an Add to Favorites method, available for interested beta testers. This means you’ll be able to heart an item from inside an external app, without having to visit Etsy. (This will be similar to how this works on Flickr: you’ll have to give such an app explicit permission to access your Favorites before it can do anything.)

This initial method will be followed by many others: Add to Cart, View Purchases, View Sales, and so forth. (These will likely be added in the next roadmap cycle.)

What’s Missing?

We’re devoting a lot of resources to improving the seller experience on Etsy. These projects are all labor intensive, and fall beyond the two-month window of this particular roadmap.

Likewise for currency conversion, language translation, and other localization efforts aimed at making Etsy a truly international marketplace.

We’ll be talking more about these things soon, we promise. I know that many people reading this are primarily interested in tools for selling, and we’ve got a lot of room for improvement here.

What’s Next?

We’ll post updates during the next couple months, to keep everyone abreast of our progress. Please keep in mind this is our first public roadmap, and as such, this roadmap itself will be improved upon. For one, we want to show who is working on what, inside of Etsy. If you have ideas for how we can make it better, we’re all ears.

    I'm glad to see that you have a roadmap and are moving forward in a planned manner, but 'surprises'? No. Have the decency to roll out changes during planned maintenance windows instead of surprising your buyers and sellers. When suddenly things like the header quit working because you've rolled out a change in an unannounced, unplanned window, it causes issues for buyers and sellers both. This is a part of the planning and rollout process that Etsy seems to continually fail to grasp.

    It looks very clean and nice...the header. Did you change the color of blue on the front page? Under categories it seems more difficult to read, maybe more difficult for older eyes? The bolded blue here is much easier.

    Good things are on the horizon and that gets me excited to do more with Etsy again! The fact that an item will only be considered "sold" once the buyer has actually paid for the item is much appreciated. I'm curious how the Treasury will work, if anyone and everyone can make them. Will each buyer and seller have that as part of their profile? Iiiinteresting....

    I'm all for change that works and only time will tell. The biggest missing link that I would love to hear you describe is an advertising campaign for Etsy. I can not tell you how many times I've told people that my jewelry is listed on Etsy and they say "what's Etsy?" I'm talking about young, artistic, aware people living in Los Angeles. It's pretty shocking. So I say "Show me the Ads and I'll show you the money!"

    Yay on the improved not marking something sold unless it's truly paid for! Re: The new graphics launched today. Love the new cart logo, and the improved search bar. Though, honestly the Etsy logo is *very small*. I have a large monitor, and it reads the size of a postage stamp. Old graphics seemed fluffier, softer. New ones are harder, harsher. I can't put my finger on it.

    I have a quick comment on the plans for Checkout. As a seller I like that they will be paying right away. But as a buyer, some sellers offer a discount and will send you a revised invoice rather than a refund. Won't this cause problems with this process???

    Wow! everything spund great. What’s Missing in my opinion? I wish I can *Duplicate one of my list* and than change & edit some small details. Sometimes it can be so much easier than create a new list from zero. It will be comfortable for sellers who have similar items with small changes (like color or size for example). Thanks ♥

    thank you SO MUCH for finally planning to require payment before marking an item sold - I've had far too many non-payers, resulting in disappointment and hassle to cancel sales and worst of all losing all the hearts on those items so you have to start from square one to promote it, all because of a flaky buyer or one who doesn't understand the process. These modifications should help a lot, thanks as always for listening to Etsy users and working hard to adapt the site as needed for the best shopping/selling experience possible.

    I've been trying to stay abreast w/ changes to the Checkout process but so far haven't noticed any mention of how this will effect sellers who use alternative payment options, i.e.: Google Checkout, RE and/or other online payment processing services + mailed money order/cashier's checks, etc. Will sales orders be blocked? This is a real concern to a small but significant minority of sellers. How will alternative payment orders be processed in the Etsy checkout if not paid by Paypal? Need answers asap on this critical issue.

    I have expressed this in the Community Council, but I'd like to express it here as well. I hope that, when you change the checkout process, you make it so you will not have multiple people buying the same one-of-a-kind item. Let me give an example: If you've ever tried to buy an original piece from Emily Martin, or a OOAK piece from some of the major Blythe fashion sellers, you know that there are literally hundreds--sometimes thousands!--of people trying to buy the same piece at once. If you don't hold that item for the first person to get it into her/his cart during the checkout process, you will have multiple people buying the same OOAK item. This is a MAJOR problem for the seller, if it happens. PLEASE make it so that the item will not be sold to multiple people. I know that most of us who sell would love to have a war over our items with buyers. However, if it actually happens to you (as a seller or a buyer), you quickly learn that this is a headache! thanks!

    This is great, thank you for the update, Rob. I'm especially looking forward to the integration of PayPal express checkout. I personally have not had many issues with non-paying buyers, but this should improve the overall experience for buyers and sellers alike, by eliminating confusion. Also, I am very glad that the flagging process is being overhauled, as that will hopefully improve the integrity (and thus reputation) of Etsy as a whole, as well as cut down on inefficiencies. I'm definitely excited to see how all of this progresses. Good luck! Jess

    The multiple shops under one login is not in there. I was hoping to see that one, but great to see the new changes. My site uses Paypal Express Checkout and I think it would be a great change to our current platform her eon Etsy. It will eliminate the non-paying shoppers.

    As justicejewelty said above, I just read the new checkout outline, and I don't see a way for buyers to checkout without paypal. I know quite a few people who don't have a paypal, and don't want one. Will there be the option still? Without it, I am slightly worried about the impact it will have on sales.     What about changes in the Explore features? There should be more options to direct customers to shops or items. Treasury (takes a lot of time to upload) and shop local are good but shop by color doesn't work and Editors' Picks is repetative. What is replacing the Gift Gides?

    I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the change you will be making to require a purchase to be paid for before it is "sold." That will make it soooo much nicer for me. I spend a lot of time in convo with people asking them, conjoling them, explaining to them, etc.....that they actually have to pay for my supplies before I will ship them.     Good ideas but I am deeply concerned you are upsetting the shopping flow and shop visibily. Since early March my shop hits have gradually decreased and continue downward. Sales have mysteriously halted. :(

    Thank especially waiting that the sold item will appear only after payment because i had some issues with people don't paying and i'm stucked with sole . Some times these items were in treasury so it was a double loss. Speaking of treasuries. I'm confused are you going to use members treasuries at all? today most of the day was Admin's FP can you give a direction? i love doing treausries but if you are not going to use them its a time spent for nothign.     i like the new payment method change, and the site layout being wider... and though i do like the idea of the personal homepage & everyone being able to have their own treasuries--what worries me is that this will definitely take away from the excitement of being featured in a treasury or showing up on the front page. these will be much more common experiences if everyone is allowed to have their own treasury, and there won't be as much excitement attached to it like there is with being included in one of a limited number of treasuries. & with the front page being personalized, that would mean front page exposure actually would reach less people....though i guess i like that the front page exposure would reach the people more likely to purchase those things... i don't know. i have mixed feelings about those two things. the rest of it is very exciting though! bring it on!

Although, I have to say i feel the same about the treasuries as pangeastore... I think that as a seller, our favorites serve a similar purpose to what you propose. Will our treasuries get the same exposure that the limited number of treasuries get presently? I dont think that is possible.. ~sincerely

    All sounds good...now just figure out how to add shipping calculators like eBay so we don't have to guess on how much to charge. Buyer punches in their zip code and knows exact charges for shipping on any item. Better yet, if sellers want to offer free shipping on orders over a certain amount, to have the capabilities of setting that up for buyers would be awesome.

    I'm also hoping that the shipping choices are improved. Ebay lets you ship according to weight and location, and gives the buyer options between shipping methods. I would love to be able to give international buyers the choice between First Class and Priority, instead of setting up reserved listings every time. It is tough to charge for shipping, so you don't lose money across country... but I have to overcharge more local people. Thanks so much for the NEWS- great info and looking forward to watching our site grow!! Etsy has changed my life!

    Thanks for the update. I don't really know what '980px wide pages' are but if it means that the page will be wider than the screen and I'll have to scroll from side to side I DON'T LIKE IT! Please consdier that many sellers target buyers are seniors and we don't like side to side scrolling - we miss too much on the right hand side of the screen

    Quit breaking the Greasemonkey EtsyHacks every week (particularly 'relisted items'). Or better yet, include that basic functionality so we can better list our items without having to GUESS!! The "treasury" is completely insignificant to the problems with Etsy's core functionality... make it easier to list, and manage, and checkout... then worry about the rest. If you can't do that, then at the very least be aware that third party developers are doing it FOR YOU... and us customers are relying on those third party tools... so when you break them, and they don't get fixed for a week... guess who looks bad? *Making the item photos smaller on the "Orders (sold)" page is less useful than the EtsyHack you broke in the process.

    I haven't seen any more roadmaps (such as the ones supposed to be released on May 1 and July 1). And according to this post, the "payment before purchase" checkout function was supposed to be implemented within two months? This is one of the most critical things Etsy needs to work on.
