Sometimes you’d like to quit your day job, but life gets in the way. Patti of Northernlodge wrote to us about her friend Anita of rollinghillsvintage. We asked her to share her story about her struggle to carve out creative time despite everyday setbacks.
I’ve always been a very busy person. When I was a little girl, I made all of my doll clothes and all my relatives received numerous woven potholders from me on any given occasion. I loved creating. I once made a skirt for myself out of paper. Of course, I didn’t go out in the rain.
In 1969, I married the love of my life, the boy next door. I worked as a nurse and he as a financial analyst. We were blessed in 1976 with our son, James. Soon after my son’s birth, our world came crashing down. My husband became totally and permanently disabled.
I suddenly had to balance my life with an infant, a very ill husband and a brand new house that came with mortgage payments.
I worked nights in my nursing profession, called for Amvet pick-ups during the day and delivered flowers on the weekend. It was tough, but I feel it has made me a very strong person and forced me to learn how to do twelve things at once.
In the fall of 2008, my daughter-in-law told me about Etsy. At this point in my life, I no longer had to hold down three jobs, and I still loved to create. I had also developed a passion for vintage. I can stare at a vintage item — an old quilt or a piece of kitchenware — and wonder where it has been, who owned it and what story it secretly held. I opened anitarae822 for paper goods, sold two Halloween cards immediately and became hooked! I expanded to rollinghillsvintage.
Soon after I opened my shops, the drop in the economy hit my place of work. We were going to start closing on Fridays — a big loss of pay for a solo wage earner. My husband and I used the Fridays to hunt for vintage at estate sales, thrift stores, flea markets. Saturdays are research and photo sessions and keeping up with my paper goods shop. I started making some wonderful friends on Etsy through the Forums, and sales were steady and affording us to continue living the lifestyle we were used to. And then, another bomb fell, my husband was diagnosed with cancer. The medical bills were mounting, his treatments were uncomfortable and side effects were not pleasant. Etsy again put balance in my life. I would sign in to Etsy, and all the bad things would go away, I would list and chat and lose myself in Etsyland. And thanks to Etsy, I kept up with the bills.
I work eight hours a day as a nurse in a surgery center. Once I’m home, I spend time with my husband, do chores and get our dinner. After dinner I work on Etsy for four or five hours. (Well, I must confess, a lot of that time is playing on Etsy, chatting with friends, looking through shops and working on my goal to become the Treasury queen! I’m addicted!) I work long days, but Etsy has made them rewarding days.
My sales are steady, and we are grateful for the Etsy income. I couldn’t have made it through the past year without the encouragement I have received from Patti at northernlodge, Sarah at fenandneds and Karl at halfpintsalvage and of course my beautiful daughter-in-law Mary at thecareerscrapper. And all of the vintage sellers who regularly promote on the Who Loves Vintage thread, they have been most encouraging.
Tell us if you have a person like Anita in your life. Post in the comments!

I feel so sad that people in your country have to pay so much for medicine and even for staying in the hospital (?) and having surgery, that there seems to be so little insurance. Everything isn't perfect where I live either, in Sweden, but you don't have to pay to get an education and health care is funded through taxes so you never pay more than $150 (I think) per year. You don't have to die just because you don't have any money. We are also strongly affected by the economy. I have a very long university education but since I was always the youngest and newest at my teaching jobs (never my dream anyway) I kept losing whatever hours I had. Last year I decided to quit TRYING to have a day job, to take my passions and turn them into my own job! While it's very hard to get noticed (Hello Etsy! My work is lovely, people like it! Feature me!) it's getting easier, slowly but steadily. People from all over the world read my blog every day and visit my shop. This is my workplace now. I love working at home - but I'm glad I only have to support myself! Maria-Thérèse http://blog.afiori.com http://afiori.etsy.com

Truly an inspirational story. It's amazing how we learn to balance everything but when you love something so much, you learn to make it work. I am 32, have twin girls, a full time job that requires me to travel, and a handbag business that my mother in law and I are trying to get off the ground. We have found that it's not a lucrative business as of yet, but we absolutly love what we do and we love working together. I'm so passionate about it like you are, and love to hear stories like yours. Thank you for sharing and I wish you nothing but success!

I can so relate to the story above. I think we all would like to quit our day job, and that is a goal, but when you start a business loan free, it takes time to build up sales and income in able to do so. I still work my 8-5 job in Real Estate, and balancing family time, my day job, time for my business can be a challenge, but a rewarding one. One that helps us through the lean times when my husbands commission based pay is low, and allows us to have play time. I am thankful daily for the chance Etsy has given us all to grow successful businesses.

I am new to Etsy and am trying to read everything I can. Your story was an inspiration to me and I immediately visited your shop. It is wonderful! I have lots of things stored that belonged to my mother and one is a picnic basket just like yours! I couldn't believe it. As I looked at each item in your shop so many great memories came back to me from my childhood. I have always had a "weakness" for anything old or vintage as they say, and reading your story and seeing your shop really made my day. God bless you for sharing and now I am going to start looking through my own vintage things and maybe post a few! Thanks again for your story.

Tonight I contacted Anita after finding her in my Vestie team as a leader. I had a few questions that I hoped she might be able to answer. Within the half hour that I was off the computer, she graciously responded and offered her insights. I did not know until now ( a few hours later) about her life story, her schedule demands, her family. Anita, I feel as though I "took up" some of your precious time and yet I'm so grateful that those questions led me to your story. Your positive attitude and commitment are admirable, your spirit uplifting... thank you!
