A Color for Every Room With Draw Pilgrim

bio_pilgrim.jpg Pilgrim Lee is a graphic artist from Melbourne, Australia. Pilgrim’s Etsy shop is stocked with her vivid, colorful work, heavily inspired by her love of ’60s and ’70s culture and aesthetic. The color and patterns of that era carry through to Pilgrim’s home where she has created an inspiring environment for herself and her family. Each week on her blog Pilgrim shares a curated collection of vintage Etsy items in her “As seen on Etsy” feature. Today she expands on that format to share her take on living colorfully.

When my son outgrew his nursery, I was so disappointed by the lack of variety in boys’ bedroom decor. Navy blue and red or something covered in licensed characters isn’t much our style, but ultimately I found it to be a fun challenge. I tend to decorate around my favorite items — we found a vintage Smokey the Bear bed sheet on Etsy that I used as the inspiration for my son’s room. The bed sheet became a duvet cover and I mixed it in with some quirky art pieces and practical furniture. Here I’ve found a ’70s forest bed sheet to build a room around. It’s masculine but still bright and fun.

As renters we were challenged to come up with ways to make our house a home without major changes like painting walls or replacing window treatments. Ultimately, it’s been a blessing, because my love of strong colors and patterns sits against a plain background. The kitchen can be particularly tough to make your own, but some eye-catching wall hangings and open shelves stocked with cute storage solutions can turn a beige space into a kitchen you’ll be shooing dinner party guests out of. Trays, cutting boards and tea towels are all fodder for wall hangings.

Perhaps the easiest space to put together is the living room. We spend the majority of our time hanging out there, and you can make a flat colored couch your own with some groovy cushions (ask my partner: “more cushions” is my answer to all of life’s problems). Walls don’t need to be repainted when you can find fabulous artwork to cover them. For example, we have the High Flyer print in a different colourway above our TV. Wallpaper enthusiasts like myself can cover the insides of bookshelves with pops of pattern. Just because we’re renting our home doesn’t mean we can’t make it our own!
