The Etsy community has long recognized the importance of supporting independent business. This year, help us celebrate Record Store Day, an international event that brings independently owned record stores, artists and fans together to honor the art of music. Today we talk shop with Phoenix record store owner Kimber Lanning, an active community organizer and proud proponent of local business. We’re also pleased to announce the Record Store Day Poster Design Contest. Read on for details on how you can enter!
In 1987, at the young age of 19, Kimber Lanning opened Stinkweeds in Phoenix, Arizona. Offering a heavily curated selection of independent and experimental music, Stinkweeds is a record store with a lot of heart; its open courtyard encourages locals to hang out, perform and exchange musical interests. You may not find your average classic rock, smooth jazz or easy listening, but Stinkweeds holds many hidden gems for those willing to treat their ears to something new. “We don’t have a big store, but we’re solid — we’re lean and mean,” says Kimber.
With large music retailers disappearing and Best Buy and Wal-Mart shrinking their floor space for music, independent record shops are growing once more, infused with new customers who desire a more personal, rewarding experience when shopping for music. Kimber continues: “The media can be so uninformed and lazy, they just keep beating this death drum for record stores.”
Even after nearly 25 years in the business, Kimber still enjoys coming into work every day. “I absolutely love my customers. I love being there. I run our statewide local coalition called Local First Arizona that I founded in 2003, so I’m speaking in front of audiences at least 3 times a week, talking about economics and the future of the state. I can be down at the capital, debating a bill or expressing frustration with the rules committee, but I’ll make it back in time for my evening shift with a smile on my face.”
To celebrate Record Store Day, Stinkweeds will be taking over their entire parking lot and serving up delicious barbecue while delighting your ears with such bands as Menomena, Kinch, Prime 8S and more. Tumbleweeds, an organization that provides emergency shelter and services for runaway youth, will offer screenprinting on site — bring a T-shirt or a canvas tote bag and have it screenprinted for free. Also, canvas record totes will be given to anyone who spends $100 or more. It promises to be a most excellent day, so for those in the Phoenix, Arizona area, check out Stinkweeds online for more information!

My good friend owns a record store in Edmonton called Freecloud (shameless plug). While I haven't been in the store for ages (I live in another city), I've always loved the musky smell and the personal service. You don't get that at the bigger stores. For those of us who still like to flip through album jackets and see our music on a shelf - thanks for your tireless work keeping the independent stores running. We really do appreciate it.

Vinyl, so many good things to say; high fidelity stereo channel (quadraphonic if you're crazy) evokes good crisp thoughts. Considering that a lot of cd's and mp3 formats remain in the Loudness Wars camp, hearing the dynamic of older recordings and vinyls is always refreshing, static, skips, cracks, and all. Digging is also an art, so hearing that a record store is closing is knowing that a lot of good tracks & people go with it. Two of my dream shops I wished to visit closed down last year after the producer passed (two shops packed with hard to find tracks from all over the world). So it's great to hear many shops are still going strong.

Yay for record stores! Album cover/insert art is sadly becoming a thing of the past, with mp3 albums downloaded instead of bought. I remember the luxury of a new CD in high school (suddenly I'm sounding old...), taking the time to look at all the inserts and art, read all of the lyrics, and listen with intention the first time, and the next few times. Sadly, I have to admit I'm more likely to listen to a mix of individual favorites than the flow of a whole album these days. The only glimpse of accompanying art I generally get is the image of the album cover on my mp3 player. I need to remedy this! As a result, I think, I've recently gotten into vintage vinyl albums for the sake of the covers, as art themselves. I've been playing with grouping sets of album covers with similar designs, elements, or colors. The large format of a vinyl album cover really adds a pop of color, and a grouping is a great way to add something decorative and interesting to a wall space... I find they're often an instant conversation starter. I'm starting to list them in my Etsy shop, so if that sounds fun to you too, check them out!
twigandsprout says:
Not to understate the sound of vinyl, I love the richness of the sound, even the clicks and pops and scratches themselves. As well as the purposeful feeling of putting needle on track... pushing play on any kind of player/stereo just isn't as satisfying.

It's great that people are so supportive of RSD--and vinyl records. But, I just wanted to point out that it's "Record Store Day" not "Celebrate the vinyl LP" day. The indie music biz (stores, distro and labels) needs people to come out to record stores and buy new music. Ideally not just on Record Store Day but all year long. Pulling out your old records on RSD doesn't help your local indie store (that's singular as there's probably only ONE left near you...) stay in business. And most (though not all) record stores sell CDs too, so even if you don't have a turntable anymore you can still go out and buy some tunes on RSD to show your support. Indie record stores need your money not just your encouragement. And indie distributors (like me) need indie record stores to stay in business. :) Dirk V Groove Distribution, America's Largest Dance Music Distributor/Importer www.groovedis.com

Yay for the old school record Mom & Pop stores! The vintage vinyl records I have in my small collection are some of my treasured keepsakes and I hope to add many more to them, thanks to the following Louisville-area record stores that have been around since before it was cool to have them: Ear Xtacy (and first to coin the term "KEEP LOUISVILLE WEIRD" 5+ years ago) Electric Ladyland Better Days Records Root N Roll Records and more! Must give a shout out for Vintage Vinyl in St. Louis!!

This reminds me of the kind of shops I most want to emulate in my Etsy shop. I love the laid back, browse at will, kick off your shoes and sing the Blues feel. Fantastic! Keep on keeping on!

We love vinyl. Playing an old crackling 78 RPM Jazz record while making tile in the studio sends us back in time.
