For this week’s Craft Night, we’ll get to make masks, and probably a mess too. Come armed with ideas for your dream mask, and we’ll help you make that dream come true with your trusty old friend, papier-mâché.
Our guest artist tonight will be the wonderful DUMBO-based artist, Maria Berrio. She currently has her studio in the same building as the Etsy Labs! She has worked and lived in Brooklyn since obtaining her BFA at Parsons School of Design, and MFA at the School of Visual Arts. Her artwork has been showcased in numerous galleries across the country. Maria also has a big passion for children’s books, teaching, and mural making. She recently finished her second mural in Harlem with teenagers from the community.
To see more of her work, visit her website and Etsy shop.
We’ll first learn how to make papier-mâché out of flour and newspaper, that classic art class concoction. Then, we’ll each make our own custom mask of any animal or creature you can imagine! We will use collage (any decorative paper or fabric), as way to decorate the outside of the masks.
Do I need to have any special skills to participate? Nope! This project is suitable for everyone, whether you’ve never worked with papier-mâché before, or you consider yourself something of an expert.
What should I bring? Please bring an empty paper towel or toilet paper roll to add dimension to your mask. All other supplies will be provided, though you are welcome to bring collage materials and paint if you have a specific direction for your mask in mind already.
Where: 55 Washington Street, Suite 712 (7th floor) Brooklyn, New York, 11201
When: Monday, October 17. Drop in between 4-8 p.m.
RSVP here.
Webcast: If you can’t make it in-person, we will be hosting a live Online Lab at 3:30 p.m. ET

Awesome! My first paper mache endeavor as a kid was a giant strawberry. So maybe next year the family will all go as fruit salad?

Paper mache is so much fun, we first learned how to make paper mache masks a few years back while volunteering for a community gardens parade in the lower east side of new york. We'd make the masks, cover them with gesso, and then paint over them- and especially for bigger masks, it makes a great fun collaborative group project.

THIS IS SO COOL. Growing up, I somehow always ended up in the class that *wasn't* doing a paper-mache art class, so it's like this silly secret thing I've always wanted to do and never had the chance. Needless to say if I could move my next trip to NYC forward by a few weeks, I'd be all over this.
