Documenting the Process

Etsy seller Traci Bautista graduated from Woodbury University with degrees in graphic design and marketing. She currently works as a mixed media artist and travels the country teaching workshops on surface design, collage and art journaling. Traci will be participating in this year’s THE CREATIVE CONNECTION EVENT, a national conference and market celebrating creative women and entrepreneurs in St. Paul, Minnesota, September 15 – 17, 2011.

While on my flight to LAX, an idea strikes. I open my journal to scribble notes and a quick sketch for a new piece of fabric jewlery and a handmade journal. Upon returning home, I pull together a “flair tray,” which includes pieces of painted fabrics, beads, papers, trim and embroidery floss to inspire my design. I stop to take a photo with my iPhone to document the process. A quick upload later and I’ve posted to Facebook with a line that states, “pieces of my new jewelry collection.”  Next comes a tweet sharing about my latest art journal collection. Then an image of my studio space posted on Instagram tagged #studiosunday.

This is the beginning of a story to get my audience wondering, “What’s she creating now?” Building upon a simple afternoon in my studio, I creatively use my design process to promote my artwork, which in turn makes sales and builds my brand.

Whether you run a full-time Etsy shop, use it as an extension of your marketing program, or just launched a new shop, you have to brainstorm creative ways to document and share your design process. Give your audience an inside view of what makes your art unique. Tell your story. I have found that my audience loves to see how I create my journals and paintings, and video tours are a great way to share that. If you are making things, will people come to buy them? You can’t expect people to find your art without working hard at promoting it. Creating art and selling online is just one step toward building a successful creative business and making a living as an artist.

Great tip on documenting your process! This is something I've thought about doing but have struggled with the best way since a large part of my process is designing on the computer. I'll have to definately brainstorm a way to document it.

This tactic works especially well if your demographic is of the younger social media savvy variety... I've been hesitant to even set up a Facebook page - very short sighted, I know. This is largely because my own set use the internet, but don't engage with it as completely as those under 30 do. To succeed in the online marketplace we have to utilize the tools that drive that specific traffic.

I'm taking pictures of the table in its various redo stages and showing them as I do them on my Facebook. My fans went NUTS!! I had three messages about the table in like 3 or 4 minutes. It was AMAZING because I hadn't gotten my fans to interact like that in a while, plus I'm always looking for new ways to get my fans to interact with me. I will DEFINATELY be sharing the process of making the rest of my tables I've got on hand for the summer! It's really fun to promote without having to feel like an advertising billboard!

Not quite so easy of you don't own an iphone and have to take photos with a camera and then upload to the computer. Also have to be on a computer (plugged into wall not laptop) to access social media and your own sites. I don't mean to sound too negative, but doesn't this eat into your creating and making time. And do lots of people really read blogs, look at flickr etc? How do they have the time? One of the best things about the internet I think is it's ability to connect people all over the world. It's really been a revolution for artists to be able to open their studio to the world and share every process- and people love it! It's the bones of why people love handmade, because the process of a human can be felt in it, and social networking your process heightens that. And LaughLand- I don't own an iphone or a laptop. All I do is keep my camera by my side, and snap pictures of pretty things as my day goes along. I blog it, flickr it, tumblr it- and yes people read it! A lot. My blog is a huge part of my traffic and blogs generally are a HUGE world, with many people fitting in their reading time over breakfast or instead of TV. I know I'd rather 'visit' an artist's studio online than watch a random drama unfold on TV.

When I share the process of making I can unveil this hidden dimension not seen in a finished piece. And I even showed my step by step process of making one of my shop's items lately: http://textilecuisine.blogspot.com/2011/08/how-to-make-bracelet-jak-zrobic.html

WWhoah! Its back to basics with me! This last year has unravelled for my earning capabilities. Funny how one family 'behind the scenes' event, throws the spanner. I've ended up so overwhelmed and absorbed with what has happened to my family that I could not relate what I do now to the 'who I was' I had always thought that the how I got to this point journey had been quite random and unrelated. How does a graphic designer, get to intieriors then motherhood/ gardening and end up redesigning textiles and making bags? Thank you Sooo much for this inspirational post! and putting me back intouch with 'the design process'. I have certainly and with urgentcy to look at, what I thought to be disparate medias, and connect them, like a childs 'dot to dot' picture. web site, etsy shop, facebook, twitter, sketch/ideas books, how I build up a new fabric, are all interconnected with my finshed bag. • WyldAngelz

    WyldAngelz says:

I started doing that last year. Not sure why I decided to begin, but usually when I work on something, I will often stop for a minute and take a step back and look at what I'm creating to see where I want to go next with the process. I'm sure others do that as well. So, last year while I was working on a painting and took a step back to take it in and see where I was going with it, I decided to snap a photo and post it to facebook. Every time I got a little further in the process, I would take another picture. I didn't think many people would be all that interested in seeing the whole process since a lot of my paintings don't look like much until I am about halfway through. To my surprise, people really enjoyed seeing the entire process and every step along the way, so I started doing it more after that. People really like watching the transition. Here are some examples of how I've done it in the past. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.227914613912974.50367.100000833104139 http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.413508330769.196953.309481265769 http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.382600755769.171215.309481265769

This "soft tactic" has worked great for me to interest customers via facebook. Folks are always interested in the process of my projects, and in a number of cases, it has sold the product before it is even completed! I was so tickled to read your article, as it was another person nodding to me, saying, yup - this WORKS! My clients love to step inside my studio via photos and videos, as it makes them feel like they are THERE with the artist. It makes your product more PERSONAL to your potential customer. :)

Yes, that's one of the most important marketing tips! Very clever! It's very true - art, hard work 10%, promoting the item 90%.
