Food porn — the sexualization of eating and cooking — is a popular term and, for some, a loaded subject. Critics blame the phenomenon as cheapening good food and over-simplifying the process of making it. Others argue that presenting food in such a manner draws a wider pool into the foodie world. A key demographic for the Food Network consists of males between ages 18-35 — not your typical, ambitious home cook.
Food imagery these days is undeniably sensual, but isn’t that the inherent nature of food? Though perhaps a well-endowed woman with tussled hair sipping hot tomato sauce from a wooden spoon plays it up a bit.
An engrossing Harper’s Magazine article, “Debbie Does Salad: The Food Network at the Frontiers of Pornography,” addresses the subject. Author Frederick Kaufman sits with an established pornography photographer, Barbara Nitke, eating Mexican food and watching hours of cooking shows. During their analysis, Barbara points out various techniques, long established in the porn industry, that occur repeatedly: extreme close-ups, seductive lighting, flattering camera angles and repetitive shooting. There are the visual allusions as well, including finger licking, peach picking, and quick cuts between tasting, sighing and stirring.
Organic Create-Your-Own Butter by Rhiamon
Recently at a talk organized by Food52’s Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs, Frank Bruni, the former restaurant critic for The New York Times, spoke with popular food blogger Deb Perelman, mastermind of Smitten Kitchen, about the pros and cons of food porn.
When I spoke with Deb on the subject, she explained that as far as food styling is concerned, “I have fun with the photos when I can. If there’s a way I can show some part of
the cooking process like a messy serving spoon or imprints of baked cookies on a piece of
parchment paper, I try to capture it.”

Photo by Deb Perleman of Smitten Kitchen
Deb is a self-taught home cook. Her recipes are enticing, and her food photography has attracted an impressive following. Deb’s pictures tell a story; sometimes they aren’t exactly related to the complexity of a particular recipe but you stop and look. And often, you stick around gawking at the picture, reading the recipes and dreaming about what can happen in your own kitchen. Her medium is the Internet, not television, but her images seduce in a similar fashion.

Photo by Deb Perleman of Smitten Kitchen
What’s on Smitten Kitchen, exists elsewhere. The web provides enticing food shots that may or may not reflect the difficulty of actually cooking it. The Skinny Gourmet did a nice post in which they identify “food porn” techniques on the web.
My personal feeling is that food photography’s primary objective is to be beautiful and inspire. It needn’t substitute good writing — an image can supply what text can’t and vice versa. The debate on the merits of food porn seems futile because the aesthetic exists and it’s not going anywhere. Instead, the focus should be on combining well written text and engaging images to offer the most immersive experience possible. Looking through Etsy’s Edibles Category, I found several food porn images; some made me chuckle and all made me hungry. I imagine that was the intent.

the more primative parts of our brain are wired to experience food and sex similarly; they are both essential for continuing our species so our bodies reward us with feel-good hormones! don't tell me you don't get tingly looking at this website, lol: foodporndaily.com i think the sexualization of food is a GOOD thing! maybe now we'll pay more attention and appreciate the beautiful, sexy food at farmer's markets and artisan shops.... cuz we all know nothing is sexy about TV dinners :/

I think, following up on PinkysBakery, that it is *essential* to sexualize food these days! People are far too fast to take food for granted, and just go the easy route. A bucket of fast food, plop down in front of the tv, and that's it, right? Food porn encourages us to *savor* the moment, really dive in with all five senses, and enjoy every morsel of it. That, most likely, means more satisfaction and less calories! Being fully present and aware when you're eating is the best portion control there is.

As for me, I'm not sure it's "porn" at all. There's a difference between "sensual" and "sensuous." Both porn and food photography (and other photography, too--fabric softeners, linens, and in general, warm and fuzzy stuff) try to heighten our awareness of the sensuousness of the item. And maybe the sensual, as well. It gives one pause...

If we are talking about the enhancement of the look of food to entice the buyer into eating it... I think food porn is not only *okay*, but brilliant. Why do laundry commercials use soft fluffy bears, puppies, etc. in their advertisements? To give us a feeling that they want their product to represent. There's no difference here. It's smart marketing.. in fact... now I'm hungry.. ♥

Agreed with WoodlandCottage. Good photography is usually sensuous photography, and neither are usually porn. It's a goal of both artistic and commercial photography, so I'm not sure why food is special case.

As awesome as all this is, it truly isn't food porn. And believe me, I know, because I've actually starred in a food porn movie (back when I was a poor student - I'm still poor now but I'm older and fatter, lol). Although it only involved me, and didn't actually involve any nudity or anything sexual, it was definitely intended for masturbatory purposes. Apparently a girl getting covered in messy food and looking like she's enjoying it really does it for some people. Those food pics do make me hungry. They look yummy, far too good to tip down a girl's shirt! ;)

Personally I love food porn. It's gotten off my tail and into the kitchen to try out new recipes and inspired me to try and perfect my own photography. Food porn gets you oh, so very hungry.

Food IS an intimate thing. We want to have a close, pleasurable experience with it. Calling it "food porn" is just making it seem taboo - no matter. Like the author says - the aesthetic exists and it isn't going anywhere. There will always be those who push the envelope, and we should all be grateful that we have such liberties. Food is love, and it should appeal to us on many different levels: smell, taste, and sight and even touch - all very important. We should use the senses we have, and enjoy life. :)

People are inherently drawn towards food. My husband shoots a photo a day and posts on Facebook. Typically it's of his commute in which he walks, takes a train to downtown Seattle, walks a bit more and arrives at his job on the waterfront...all fodder for amazing photography. But interestingly enough, the photos he snaps and shares of the laboriously long and gracious meals we prepare together garner the most comments. Maybe it's a tribute to us and how our friends relate to us [we love to host dinner parties] or it is the sensuality of food that draw comments. Anyway...great article! I think the first food related item I ever saw on screen to make me wander the way of food sensuality was 'Chocolat'. To me the essence of what is affective about the images of food lately is sensuality as opposed to porn. This is not to vilify the possibility of food porn, I just think that that would be more in the realm of performance art. Let's allow porn to still occupy an extreme of its own.

Part of me wants to dissect this idea of food porn into something deeper - something missing in the psyche of modern people. Bare with me... Has food become a replacement for meaningful relationships in a society where the divide between men and women only seems to be getting deeper by the day? Recent male culture in America makes it almost all but unacceptable to be masculine while speaking to a woman and connecting with her on any level that doesn't include commenting on her breasts. So, while their men are busy bonding with other men over football, beer, and fatty foods, American women are turning to chocolate, cheesecake, and raspberry mojitos. On the other hand this could just be one more step towards all out love-sex-food-happy-hedonism-land. In which case, I say life is short. Eat well and love even better!
