It’s about damn time that someone from Etsy said hello to our friends in Australia, and I am very pleased to be the one to do it. I’ll be in Sydney and Melbourne June 3-5, 2011, and I would love nothing more than to gather Etsy members together, have a conversation, answer any questions you may have, and most importantly, invite you to meet and toast one another. Sadly, I will only be in Australia for three days (ugh! sorry, no time for Perth, Brisbane, Tasmania, or Adelaide on this quick trip. ), but I want to see as many of you as I can, as often as I can.

Friday June 3:
I have been invited to Sydney as part of Creative Sydney, an annual celebration of makers, thinkers and creativity in Sydney. This is where you will first find me.
1. Hands On: Makers Show Their Wares — 18:00

Creative Sydney is hosting Hands On: Makers Show Their Wares. The session will introduce five of Sydney’s most outstanding designers, makers and artisans. We’ll hear how they craft unique products, manage niche production processes and share their work with fans around the world.
Participants include Jodie Fox, founder of Shoes of Prey; Keg de Souza, a member of the Rizzeria printmaking collective; Jeremy Somers, founder of swimwear and print label We Are Handsome, and collaborative eyewear label COLAB.
There’s just one spot left on the line up – and the good people at Creative Sydney are saving it for an Etsy seller! If you’d like to share your work on stage at the Sydney Opera House, email hello@creativesydney.com.au with a link to your Etsy store and a one-line description of what you’d share with the Creative Sydney audience. They’ll invite one maker to present their product to the masses for 5 minutes! Entries close Friday, May 27, 2011.

Would love to be there ....but I'm up in the Northern Rivers region just south of Brisbane, where it's warm and sunny. Forget Brisbane, the weather is soooo bland, and Melbourne is NOT what you call cold.....besides we have culture, and subculture and all the shades inbetween.... and talk about art.....and as I am from one of the places down under of down under, yes we use the term, it's the "g'day" bit we find the cheese. Ok, I removed the downunder reference. I had no idea (total Australia noob). Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it to Brisbane or Adelaide on this trip. The only was I was able to make this trip work with preexisting obligations was to limit it to three days.

You know, there are also these other fabulous Australian capital cities who are huge supporters of Etsy - Perth, Hobart and Darwin (not sure how much support there is in Darwin, but u should be able to see the stats on that) if u are to mention just capital cities, becos there are many regional supporters too. But seeing as u only have 3 days in Oz... Sydney & Melbourne were the perfect choices! ENJOY!

I AM Australian, not a Brit! I've only been living in the UK for two years! By the way guys, it wasn't etsy who left tassie off the map, it was the seller of that paper cut. He has written a big disclaimer on the listing saying he knows he left it off and he's sorry but because of the nature of the paper cut he couldn't include it. I guess he got a lot of hate mail! Matt you will love Melbourne, it's a great city, the most like a European city that you will find in Australia.

Melbourne welcomes you and all the etsy community. If you get a chance, pop down Brunswick Street, Fitzroy (around the corner from Collingwood). It's a 3D experience of etsy with fab coffee and a melting pot of cultures.

At laaaaast! Australians have been some of Etsy's most engaged, enthusiastic & talented members since the beginning, so it's nice that you're finally dropping by - although 3 days is pretty brief! Just a little note...for consistency's sake, it should read "...Perth, Brisbane, Hobart, or Adelaide..." (Tasmania is the state, not the capital city). Just my opinion too...I don't have a problem with "down under", "g'day", "bewdy mate", "cooee cobber" or any other aus-related colloquialisms - I think they're quaint & colourful!

People showing their wares on a Friday night in Kings Cross has all sorts of connotations. You'll see what I mean when you get here, just step outside for a while. We think of Vivid Sydney as a light show; I just had a look at the program and it seems to have expanded this year. Pity all the tickets are gone but that's typical Sydney. I hope you enjoy your trip. Autumn in Sydney is lovely.
