Update: Thanks to all who tuned in to and turned up at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn on April 19th, 2011 to participate in this event. Scroll down to download Tara’s worksheets and watch the recorded workshop.
When I was a kid, my mom woke up regularly between 3 and 4 a.m. She got up, made coffee, and sat in front of her sewing machine. She sewed and sewed until it was time to make breakfast, ask my brother and me how we slept, and see us off to the bus stop.
Then she would sew more.
My mom had to provide for two children: feeding us, putting a roof over our heads, sending us to countless summer camps. She did it all on the income she brought in with that sewing machine. When faced with a daunting, near impossible task, she didn’t balk. She simply asked, “Can it be done?” Every day, she answered, “Yes.”
I have built my business on the same question. Constantly asking and reasking, reframing the challenge to move myself and my goals forward. I must thank Mark Frauenfelder, of MAKE magazine, for posing the can-it-be-done question in his book, Made by Hand. He applied it to the almost inexplicable drive to create, to DIY.
When you’re your own boss, it’s up to you to seek out challenges, to do terrifying things, and to get comfortable with failure. Building your business so that it’s sustainable, profitable, and rewarding is the ultimate challenge.
In my Dare of DIY workshop, we’ll discuss what it means to challenge yourself, why we thrive on personal challenge, and how you can dissect your problems and liabilities into challenges that push you forward. Instead of focusing on the difficulties of building a business, attendees will tap into their DIY ethic to create exciting ideas and opportunities for their business by asking: can it be done? There is no right answer or correct methodology, only the unique answers we each have to share. Attendees will leave the workshop with a fresh approach and positive outlook on their growing businesses.

"to get comfortable with failure" - I think that's one of the biggest challenges of owning your own small business. Failure will happen, whether it's failure to complete a project (or complete is as intended), failure to make a deadline, or failure to make a sale, we are faced with failures on a regular basis - and as the business owner, you have no board or committee to delegate the issue to, it's up to YOU. Learning to face the fears, deal with the failures, and keep the faith that you and your business will succeed lies solely in OUR hands. We look forward to the workshop!!! Thanks for sharing!

I can't imagine working that early in the morning, For some reason I feel ill when I get up early. My peak energies are noon till about three, then I get tired, sometimes I nap, unless I am edgy tired, then I will Knit, Usually I want to paint in the evenings when the kids are in bed which is around eight and my husband is watching his Family Guy. Of course if I had a disturbing dream or wake up and can't go back to sleep then I will sketch or paint. I use what time I am up to make the most of.

I think that learning how to do things, fix things, build things, grow things, maintain things and make things helps to develop self confidence. When I was a kid, I was taught and expected to work. A lot of the work was a bit hefty for my skinny little kid body, but I had to do it anyway. As an adult, I've never been afraid to try and figure something out. I thank my parents for forcing that DIY on to me!

Great inspiration.Sounds exactly like me...sew sew sew . I'm pretty sure that my 2 boys (men) think the same of me. One is now a fashion designer himself and the other a graphic designer. Both with degrees...must have done something right! Being creative has its own challenges but don't forget even the biggest businesses fail. You learn by failing as well, even small failures help you to learn. Kinda crazy but the sooner you fail the sooner you will succeed! The most important lesson for artistic creationism is that your particular style will only impress a select audience. Think about were you look for your inspiration and know that your prospective buyers are looking there too. Happy learning.

Your mom's story reminded me of a story a woman told me at my mom's memorial visitation recently. A friend of Mom pointed to her confirmation photo and asked me if I knew the story about the dress she was wearing. She said during the war years, white fabric was very hard to come by. Finally, her mother found some in a town about 50 miles from there and bought it all. Then my grandma sewed matching dresses for the entire class out of it. I asked how many were in the class and she said, 14, 4 of which were boys. So grandma sewed 10 identical dresses! She said grandma was a very good seamstress. My mother sewed for 6 children and taught 5 of us. It is a learned talent. A seamstress gains many qualities of character such as following instructions (the guide sheet) and the creative aspect is also rewarding.

PoetryofObjects says:
Such a sweet story of your mom sewing. My mom used to sew all sorts of dresses for me in the 60's and 70's. I remember one day for my fourth grade class picture, my mom took me to pick out any fabric that I wanted for my dress. I picked the wildest, loudest 60's mod fabric you can imagine...and my amazing mother sewed me a maxi dress ...complete with a purple choker to match! Boy oh boy did I think I was something else in that dress...your story brought me back to that sweet memory. Now, I have a 23 year old of my own and I've sewed her many a wild outfit as well....thanks for the story! I just looked at your site and signed up for your newsletter! Love~

Thank you! Some thought-provoking comments... I am trying some new methods for my shop. (Requires lots of chocolate for moral fortification--that's my story and I'm sticking to it.) After watching this tutorial, though, I'm thinking maybe I should be doing something different. Playing with colors is fun, but maybe something more painterly... :) Thanks for the inspiration.

I had a mom who was a soft touch for young brides, mothers and friends of mine who needed costumes. Our dining room had a folded out Necchi and piles all around "her wall". We would go shopping and she'd reverse engineer my unattainable favorites. Thank you for bringing her back with your loving story.
