Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello there! My name is Jennifer Bishop and I am from San Antonio, Texas by way of Mississippi, New York and Italy. I come from a large rambunctious family of seven, which taught me from an early age to find something to set myself apart from everyone. I also learned how to concentrate even if it sounded like a train was blowing through the house!
I have a Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute in New York City. Being trained as an architect, I have always appreciated precision, accuracy, fine detail and craft. I always strive to attain that perfection (or near to it) through anything I create. Before selling full time with my Etsy shop, Architette Studios, I practiced architecture in the “real world.” Pencil skirt? Yes. Coffee in one hand? Yes. It was glamorous at times — I worked on large projects, had very well-known clients and designed with esteemed colleagues. However, a nagging feeling was always there. I missed the opportunities for pure creation where I would conceive something on my own accord, expelling my thoughts into the world in any outlet or media possible. Over time, it became more and more evident in my everyday life that I was not going to be happy until I could have the right environment.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I love to go for jogs in the high heat of the Texas summer. I love being a citizen of the world and adding to the list of destinations I have traveled to. I spend time with my boyfriend James, enjoying our dog, two cats and very large all-organic garden.

What would be the title of your memoir? Why?
A Modern Day Renaissance, because every day is a rebirth. There are new beginnings everywhere and it is always possible to see the world with new eyes.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Lately, I have been drawn to manifesting my creations through the means of paper. Even as a child, I would stand in the paper aisle of a store and just dream of the things all those blank sheets could become.
What does handmade mean to you?
I used to think handmade meant the typical definition — to be made by hand rather than by machine. Now I feel that handmade is anything original, one of a kind, built with care and craftsmanship. A handmade item is seen with a creative eye and stands out from the rest!
Who has been most influential in your craft?
I owe every drop of creativity I have to my mom and dad for raising my two sisters, two brothers and me to know that we can do and be whatever we want. They raised us to be true Renaissance children — and ultimately, adults. They have always been supportive of my creations, even if it was a secret science experiment to see how long it would take for a hidden piece of pie to decompose (yikes!) under the kitchen sink.

When did you know you were an artist/maker?
If you were to ask my parents, they would say I was born this way. My mom still loves to claim that I was the only child she knew who could name a city just by its skyline!
How would you describe your creative process?
Ongoing and evolving! I love to take an everyday object, scene or thought and alter it to where it is seen from a different perspective. The Construction Series cards were born by taking an everyday object that everyone recognizes and can relate to, and then applying the “art” of how architects document and notate an architectural drawing.
The City Skyline Series was created after thinking about how I could draw an “architecturally correct” city skyline starting with just a map. For each city I draw, I research the locale, discover important landmarks, icons, geography, and then I locate all of these things on the map. It is very much about traveling to any distant city, and uncovering its beauty. I built my own online portfolio and I frequently post behind the scenes work and new upcoming items on my Facebook page for Architette Studios.
If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsman (dead or alive), who would it be?
My top five would definitely be Georgia O’Keefe, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Andy Goldsworthy, MC Escher and I am always in awe of the work of my friend Audrey Kawasaki.

What handmade possession do you most cherish?
I have kept a handwritten journal since I was about 15 years old. I am on book #14 now. The entire collection is priceless, a documentation of my life. Re-reading through its pages takes me back to those moments in time and I realize what a growing process life really is.
How do you get out of your creative ruts?
Every once in a while, I will have one of those off days when the coffee does not work and the sunshine does not come through. It is at those times when I look beyond my field for something new and find an untapped source of creativity.
Where would you like to be in ten years?
That is hard to say, but I hope it involves a warm, sandy beach, sunshine, iced tea, my journal, a camera and some good Jimi Hendrix.
