Tell us about yourself.
My name is Emily J. Davis and I’m an artist. I work full time as a wedding photographer and freelance for various publications in the Twin Cities. My weekends are spent photographing weddings and engagement sessions, while my weekdays are full of various photo shoots including food, interesting people, and various local businesses.
I have a BFA from the University of Minnesota where my college years were spent developing film in the darkroom or making large abstract oil paintings and collages. About four years ago, after graduating from college, I returned to ceramic art, which I had learned back in middle school. I have since worked to develop my own personal style, a process I continue to build upon.
Apart from creating, what do you do?
I’m a foodie! There’s nothing I won’t try and nothing I don’t like (okay, I’m not a huge fan of tofu). A wonderful evening for me would be going out for oysters and a glass of wine with friends. Most recently, I had a wonderful sea-urchin pasta at Bar La Grassa, in Minneapolis. I can be a little obsessive and I’ve always dreamed of being a food critic. I also fill my time riding my vintage green Schwinn around town, swimming at the beach, watching the sunset on a hot summer night, watching Star Trek over and over again, and drinking lots of coffee.

What would be the title of your memoir?
“If You Build It, They Will Come.” I guess that one is fitting because I’ve been self employed since I can remember (with the exception of a few waitress positions and other odd jobs here and there). In college I painted murals in people’s homes, which caught on pretty quickly in our small suburban town. Soon, I was painting ocean murals and safari scenes on kids’ walls, and actually getting paid for it! Recently, I have started a photography business which has grown quite well over the past few years. It’s important not to dismiss your talents. Even though some people may tell you otherwise, there is a place for creative people in this world and plenty of ways to make money and pay your bills through your artistic abilities.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I’m inspired by colors, textures, shapes, patterns, and other elements of everyday life. I think as an artist, you are constantly seeing things that catch your eye, which immediately get stored away in your brain and slowly make their way into your art. Last year, I traveled to southern Spain to visit my little sister who was studying abroad. I was very drawn to the Moorish decorations and architecture of Sevilla and Ronda. I think that trip has probably started to influence the decorations and domed lids on some of my jars.
What does handmade mean to you?
When I think of what handmade means to me, I think of something tangible, delicate, textured, and something that you can’t reproduce over and over again. I like objects that exist in the world as one singular item. It’s nice to see a small imperfection in a piece of art, one that shows that the piece was indeed made by hand.

Who has been most influential in your craft?
Most of what I do is straight from my own imagination and self-taught. However, I am constantly learning from the people around me. The studio I work at is a large communal studio with about 50 ceramic artists. It’s nice to hear their thoughts on ceramics and get creative feedback on my work. I also have to give some credit to Dan McFeters, my childhood pottery teacher who planted the seed of ceramic art!
When did you know you were an artist/maker?
It started back when I was a child. I feel blessed that my mom was able to be a stay-at-home mom, causing our childhood to be filled with so much creative activity. When it rained, we would build popsicle-stick boats and race them down the flooded ditches in our neighborhood. When we needed an “extra” in one of our plays, mom would gladly play the part. And when we needed costumes for our shows, she would drive us to the local thrift store to find props and old prom dresses for our performances. I really thank my mom because I don’t remember any dull days growing up. And, I thank my dad for making it possible for mom to stay home and for putting up with all our girlishness.
How would you describe your creative process?
Pottery is a very meditative art form. Your emotions can play a huge part in the success of your pieces. If my mind is stuck on the bad day I’m having, anything I make on the potter’s wheel is guaranteed to fall apart and I’ll leave the studio feeling defeated and stressed. It’s about connecting the calmness in your mind to the movements of your hands with the clay. They say a good potter can make a pot with his or her eyes closed — it’s all about feeling the movement of your hands and seeing the piece come together in your mind.

If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsman (dead or alive), who would it be?
I’m really drawn to the paintings of Giorgio Morandi. He paints beautiful still life paintings of bottles and pottery. The colors he uses are so simple, delicate, and muted — never have the colors gray and tan looked so good. I was able to view a gallery of his work when I was traveling in Rome a few years ago. I gave each painting at least 15 minutes of my time, but I could’ve stared at them all day.
Also, I have to mention food photographer Katie Quinn Davies. She is my new inspiration for food photography. I love her blog, What Katie Ate. I would love to spend a weekend watching her creative process (or maybe just eating the food she prepares). She has a wonderful feel for composition, texture, and lighting. Everything she photographs makes my mouth water!
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
I have quite a few items from my Grandma Hallie, who passed away a few years ago. My favorite is a gorgeous cream colored fisherman quilt, covered with intricate cables and bobbles. It looks like it took months to create! Also, I have a handful of her stitcheries, hand-knit mittens, aprons, hand-written recipes, and other similar things that adorn my shelves.
How do you get out of your creative ruts?
Sometimes I’ll take a couple days off when I’m feeling stuck or uninspired. It’s good to take a break, step back, and then approach whatever you were working on with fresh eyes. Although art is fun, if you’re doing it every day, all day, it can start to take its toll on your body and mind. I just recently started taking hot yoga classes for the exercise and meditative benefits. It has been so energizing and every time I go, even if I have to drag myself there, I always feel refreshed ready to tackle the rest of my day.
Where would you like to be in ten years?
- Scenario 1: I follow my love of music and become a famous jazz singer. I own more slinky black dresses than you can count.
- Scenario 2: I move to a small island where I have an artist’s studio and sell my work to tourists. I walk on the beach every day. Life is simple and relaxing.
- Scenario 3: I have a cute little farm house with lots of cute, fluffy sheep. I devote my life to making artisan cheeses.
- Scenario 4: I become a famous photographer, traveling the world, camera in hand at all times. People wonder, “How did she take that photo?”
- Scenario 5: I move to Rome, and feast on fabulous pizzas and pastas every day. I wander the cobblestone streets in search of mystery and adventure.
- Scenario 6: I continue to create art and keep dreaming big!

Beautiful creations! I took pottery in school and would always giggle when watching people throw for the 1st time on the wheel as sometimes they would create a menagerie of twisted swirly uncontrolled goop & others may even lose their clay as it whirled right off the wheel through the air into the wall. It is definitely for the patient of heart. Your creations are exquisite. Thank you for sharing with all of us. Blessings, Lisa~ LeafandInk.com

Your work is just gorgeous! I'm sure to be a customer soon! Just to comment on "only one exists" part of handmade - that is great, but in my case I may spend 40+ hours designing and patterning a piece. If I don't make more than one from that pattern, I'd have to charge several thousand per piece! But I do try to change up the fabrics and details.

By far one of the most interesting interviews I've read on here, I love the comments about where she sees herself in 10 years. There was great comfort in knowing I'm not the only one that dreams big in random ways (including being a jazz singer!)

You are my story! I owe my creative spirit to my parents, grandparents and my elementary art teacher!!!!! I still love her! I am an elementary art teacher who has her master's in fine art...because of her. I loved painting, and 2-D was my emphasis in college. In Sept. I acquired a 40" loom! I am loving fibers! I am not working as much in clay and making beautiful utlitiarian pieces of pottery (like yourself) but, I am cranking out the utilitarian pieces of fiber art! Good luck to you and your sales! Check out my etsy store if you get a chance.....one of my handmade studio art rugs might fit perfect in your studio! www.canfieldcreations.etsy.com

Terrific interview! As a youngster, I often envisioned myself as a freelance artist, but listed to the voice of society telling me that I could not make a living at it and went into education. I have recently reconnected with my artist roots through jewelry making and metalwork, but wish I would have listened to my heart. It is so refreshing to see someone who has followed theirs and had success. It just goes to prove that you can do whatever you love and to me, that is what Etsy is all about.

Beautiful pottery. Lovely interview. While I can fully appreciate the sentiment about calm flowing into your art, and bad days making your things fall apart, I found with painting that I could release my negative emotions THROUGH the artwork. The more of that I brought to the process, the more brilliant it seemed. Of course, drawing and painting are just side things for me now...if I'm looking for brilliance to make my mortgage payment, I would end up a crisis creator and that would be bad! Luckily, artists are all different. :)

Congrats, Emily. It is said, your great-grandmother could look at an expensive dress and go home and sew it up without any pattern. Your grandmother claimed she was not crafty but we all have treasures that she knit, sewed, cross-stitched. You honor their genes. They would be so proud of you. So would your grandpa, Clarence, who loved to paint and create. You use the gifts God has blessed you with. God looks upon you...and is pleased. You sure do beautiful work...the turquoise orb and starry night mug ...are my absolute favorites. Amazing!!
