Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Jennifer Morris, and I’m a full-time artist, foodie and recent transplant to the amazingly verdant Portland, Oregon. I’m a huge fan of handmade chocolate, farmer’s markets, ferns, hot tea, yoga and climbing trees. Lucky for me, there are endless opportunities to enjoy each of these things here in my beautiful new city.
The winding path that led me here involves studying sculpture at the University of Texas at Austin, where I built fanciful installations out of wood and steel, filling rooms with giant wooden ferns and mirrored canoes. After school I packed up that canoe and moved to Los Angeles to build sets for the film industry. A few years later, in a serendipitous combination of timing, daring, hard work and a dash of luck, I found myself striking out to create my own art as a career. Then, just as the guavas and papayas were ripening, my photojournalist boyfriend, Sam Tenney, swept me away from my warm, sunny life in Los Angeles for a brief adventure in upstate New York where we explored centuries old farmhouses, ate apples off of abandoned trees and survived three winters of 10-foot-high snow banks and snow-shoeing to the grocery store. Our life in the land of snow and ice ended when we fled several months ago, just before the first snow fall on the East coast to begin our new adventure in Portland.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
My days start with happy things that make me feel nurtured..a pot of hot tea and a big green smoothie (a.k.a. swamp juice) made from farmer’s market greens and herbs from the garden. It really is delicious, I promise. I practice yoga each day, sometimes in my garden at sunrise during the warmer months. These things always get me ready for what’s to come next in my day. Experimenting in the kitchen, making up recipes, cooking for friends, dinners under the stars and listening to music are other things I love.
I enjoy going on adventures both far away and close to home — I make it a habit to take wrong turns on purpose and am a firm believer in getting lost. Exploring off the beaten path, even in my own neighborhood, is the best way to make surprising new discoveries.
What would be the title of your memoir? Why?
The title of my memoir would be A Girl in Love With the World, because I am.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Inspiration truly is everywhere. It’s in the air, in sunlight, in rain, in music, in a little boy skipping down the street in red boots, in a leaf fluttering down from a tree, in a late night conversation with an old friend. As long as I stay open, it’s there waiting for me.

What does handmade mean to you?
Handmade means the world to me. It’s a connection to the past. It’s an act of generosity filled with time and love. It’s a philosophy and a way of life. I love imagining what the world would be like if we all applied the philosophy of slow, deliberate, conscientious, and authentic acts to most every aspect of our lives, our jobs, our relationships.
Who has been most influential in your craft?
There are so many people who have influenced me in a million ways, both large and small. The most important are my tough professors and teachers who believed in me enough to challenge me to be better and reach farther.
I should also mention more recent and undeniable influence has come from my amazing customers here on Etsy and in stores. They have really kept me going with their generous friendship, encouragement and support.
When did you know you were an artist/maker?
Some of my earliest memories involve discovering and creating. I have really vivid distilled recollections of how incredible it felt to break twigs and fashion them into beautiful structures and shelters for frogs. I was very concerned with where they would go in the rain.
Another favorite is when my sister and I put on shows, making costumes and selling handmade tickets door to door around our neighborhood for our choreographed backyard dances. These productions usually ended with someone’s little brother running through the middle of the performance and throwing mud at us.

How would you describe your creative process?
I spend a lot of time gathering and soaking up inspiration and then suddenly, explosions of ideas go off one after another after another. Sometimes the inspiration strikes so quickly that I’m scrambling for a scrap of paper or nearest napkin to sketch or scribble seemingly indecipherable descriptions of ideas. About one tenth of all of these ideas are physically realized. With the business side of things taking up just as much time as the creative, if not more, there just isn’t enough time to create it all.
If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsman (dead or alive), who would it be?
I would love to meet so many artists and inventors, but if I could travel back in time and could only choose one, I would want to spend time with Paul Klee in his studio during the years he was making puppets and puppet theaters for his son. I’d bring Andrew Bird along to serenade us and then I would cook a big meal for us out in the garden at the end of the day.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
I have an ever-growing collection of paintings, drawings and photographs of women doing brave, adventurous and inspiring things. One is a test-print lithograph of a beautiful woman swinging through a lush jungle like Tarzan. It was given to me by an anonymous artist in school who hid it inside one of my installation sculptures for me to find later. Other pieces in my collection are from some of my favorite Etsy artists: Thisisalliknow (I could live in her paintings, and in some senses I do), TheBrilliantMagpie, Nuitblanche, LisaCongdon, and CoriKindred.
The most precious thing of all is a ring that my dad made many years ago. My mom gave it to me when I went away to school. It’s a gold dome covered with delicate drops placed one at a time on top. The amazing thing is that he taught himself how to create it with the lost wax casting method.

How do you get out of your creative ruts?
When the well starts running dry, it’s time to stop and refuel. The best way to do that is to shake up my world a little bit, turn my perspective on its side by doing something new like going for a walk in the rain, lying under the stars or climbing to the top of a hill and singing as loud as I can. Anything to wake up my senses again. Sometimes just eating a completely new meal that I’ve never tried before helps. And if all else fails, taking a nap is always good too.
Where would you like to be in ten years?
In ten years I hope to have built a treehouse studio for yoga, art and leading creative workshops, have my roots planted a little deeper, have a son or daughter or two or three and still be taking wrong turns all the way home.

I´m so happy to find here a artist i´ve been following for some time on Flickr. She was in the few three people group who´s work inspired me to try to do something with my hands, and being happy with it, instead of being said with deslikes of my day job. And now, that i´m trying yoga and meditation, discoverd she is a fan (saw first on a comment on flickr). Thank you for being there creating your amazing and inspiring work.

How wonderful (and rare) to see a Polymer Clay artist featured at Etsy, although unless my eyes deceive me, I did not see the word polymer mentioned once in the article, nor is it mentioned specifically in the description of the items I checked. What a fantastic opportunity to educate the world about the creative possibilities of this extraordinary medium. Absolutely gorgeous work, Jennifer.

Congratulations on the FS! I can honestly say this is the best interview I have ever read on here. Jennifer has been one of my favorite sellers forever. I was so happy to hear she would be moving close by. I hope to someday see her amazing creations in person. Being a polymer clay artist myself I know thw incredible amount of talent it takes for her to create her amazing little works of art! I often just go to her store and just ogle the gorgeous pieces. She seems like such an amazing person. Thanks etsy for letting us get to know her better.
