Tell us a bit about yourself.
Colby: Jolby is made up myself (Colby Nichols) and Josh Kenyon. We are a design, illustration, and art direction team that have been working together since 2005. We live and work in Portland, Oregon, a city that is pretty amazing. We both come from a background as Art Directors for various agencies, but in 2010 set off on our own as Jolby. We do work with clients and agencies, as well as create art for gallery shows and make our own products.
Josh: We recently self-published our first children’s book with co-author Rachel Roellke called The King’s 6th Finger. It is a tale about a King named Mortimer who is obsessed with the number 5. Then one day, from his five-legged chair, he looks down at his hand and discovers that he’s grown a 6th finger.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Josh: I love food. Making it, finding new eateries, pickling, preserving, canning, foraging — you name it I love it. I also enjoy hikes with my wife and dog, working on my house and racquetball.
Colby: I love playing video games, racquetball, and good craft beers. Josh and I are both big coffee geeks and its been amazing living in Portland and being surrounded by great roasters.

What would be the title of your memoir? Why?
Colby: It would be called “Ride the Weird.” Working in a small studio could drive some people mad but we thrive on it. We have a collective strange sense of humor and spend most of the day laughing at each others’ ridiculousness.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Josh: Living and creating in Portland has been so rewarding and it continues to keep giving back to us. It’s easy to find inspiration around the city and the surrounding wilderness, but a lot of it comes from our friends who create awesome things. We are very fortunate to be around people who push us to be better artists every day.
What does handmade mean to you?
Colby: When Jolby first started, Josh was living in Chicago and I was in Portland. We needed to figure out a way to create large bodies of work without mailing paintings back and forth. So we came up with a method that allowed us to create everything by hand then scan and put it all together on the computer. The majority of our work is reproduced as giclee prints, however everything you see in each piece was created by hand. Even if we do create something digitally, we will print it out, trace it or rough it up by hand, and then scan it back in for use. The textures that Josh makes for our work are all created by hand, too. He’ll do some pretty wacky stuff in order to get the textures you see.
Josh: We are getting ready to start on our next art show that will be in San Diego at Subtext Gallery and we are really trying to push ourselves to create more original pieces. It’s been fun growing as an artist and feeling encouraged to create handmade work as much as possible.
Who has been most influential in your craft?
Colby: Collaborating with Josh for the past 6 years has been the most influential. Since day one, we have pushed each others’ skills and ideas, which has led to a constant evolution of what we do. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without him.
Josh: This isn’t fair because Colby answered first, but Colby has been a huge influence to me as an artist and designer. Before I met Colby I hadn’t drawn in years. Once I entered art school, I focused solely on design and neglected illustration. Colby has shown me how to have a voice as a creator. I must also mention that my mother was a huge influence on my creative work. She was a great painter and I hope to someday be like her.
When did you know you were an artist/maker?
Colby: Ever since I was a kid I knew I wanted to be an artist. I have vivid memories of drawing pictures for my friends since I was super young. For my 10th birthday I asked my family to buy me office supplies (paper, organizers, a stapler, reams of paper, etc.) so that I could start a business from the top of my bunk bed.
Josh: Since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to do something creative. My dream was to work for Disney as an animator and that’s what I originally went to school for. I realized that animation wasn’t my path and fell into graphic design. I think I am still growing into being an artist and I still feel like I still have a lot to learn.

How would you describe your creative process?
Colby: First, we’ll sit down with the project or assignment in front of us and sketch out ideas. We’ll both concept together, gather visual inspiration from various sources, and then figure out who should do what once we decide on a direction. I draw the larger shapes, objects and characters, while Josh does the patterns and textures. From there we’ll split up the work and try to direct the project towards the best results possible.
If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsman (dead or alive), who would it be?
Josh: The late Charley Harper. He’s an inspiration in most of what we do as well as other illustrators and designers who owned that mid-century style.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
Colby: I have a screen print by Tim Biskup that I bought from a gallery here in Portland. They had mislabeled the price and I got a really good deal. Tim is a huge inspiration for me.
Josh: I have a painting my mom did of Los Angeles, where I am from. She created it with oil paints and a palette knife. It reminds me of her whenever I see it.
How do you get out of your creative ruts?
Josh: Running your own design shop is a difficult but rewarding process. When one of us announces the dreaded phrase “burn out,” we make sure to get out, have fun, recharge or see friends. We always return fresh and ready to go.
Where would you like to be in ten years?
Colby: I would like to be busy with projects that reward us creatively while still being surrounded by everything that keeps us pumped. I would also like a robotic cat and a clone.
Josh: I would like to have a couple employees who work with us to create memorable and fun work. I think if our year could be split up between book illustrations and client work, I would be super stoked. Also, owning a semi-famous pickle company wouldn’t be too bad.

Incredible illustrations. Your studio sounds like so much fun! During my college internship, my art director was a guy who was one of the funniest people I"ve ever met. I would laugh so hard, I'd be crying---everyday. My stomach actually hurt from laughing. It was to the point that our co-workers would come to our office to find out what was so hilarious because they could hear us down the hall. Laughter makes for good design...seriously. We produced some really awesome pieces of art during that time and were really inspired by each other. It sounds like you, Josh and Colby, have this dynamic and that's a powerful creative force! I wish you all the best. Keep up the good work, and keep laughing!
