Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am Angie and I live in Davenport, Iowa which sits alongside the Mississippi River. Luminology came into being right about the time I turned 40 in 2010. It started as a brainstorming session around the topic of “Gee, what do I want to be when I grow up?” and evolved into creating simple, beautiful products and owning my own business.
I’m a graphic designer by trade and have been working in front of a computer forever (hence, the glasses — computers have ruined my eyes). I am a free spirit. I don’t like people telling me what to do. I’m rather quiet but can be funny if provoked. I have freckles which I have generously passed down to my two kids.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I run my business, co-run my household alongside my stalwart husband, work on various graphic design projects for a variety of clients, read, meditate and try to cook food that doesn’t offend the family too much. My favorite thing to do is have deep, meaningful conversations.
What would be the title of your memoir?
Believe it or not, I’ve thought about writing my memoir a lot. The title always changes! But this one probably sums it up the best — Wherever You Go, There You Are.
Where does your inspiration come from?
There is so much genius in the world that to put my finger on one or two things is practically impossible. To state it simply, I am inspired by anything that is beautiful: music, the written word, nature, food, fashion, architecture, tools, whatever! But the word beauty doesn’t necessarily mean perfect. Sometimes I feel we make a whole lot of ugly trying to make things “perfect.”
Having said that, I am most inspired by people who live their truth. By that I mean people who have figured out who they really are (not who they think they should be) and are set free to use their gifts and talents in meaningful ways. When people live from this place, magic happens. This is probably the most beautiful and sacred thing to me!
What does handmade mean to you?
Love in form. It’s pretty easy to spot stuff that is made only for the sake of making money. There is no energy in it, no love. Handmade just feels good.
Who has been most influential in your craft?
Anyone who has said yes or encouraged me has been influential. It takes a lot of yeses and a lot of encouragement to do what I do. Most importantly, my family, because it takes time to create/make and and they are always very supportive of me.
People along the way who have answered questions, offered advice, been willing to collaborate — all these people have played a crucial role as well. I really want to throw a huge party and invite all of them over to say thank you!
When did you know you were an artist/maker?
When I was little I knew. Then I forgot. A long time later I remembered.
How would you describe your creative process?
My creative process is a “go with the flow” kind of process. In my old web design days in Corporate America, we had a term to describe user-interface design that seems appropriate in explaining my creative process: the scent of information. It goes something like this — an idea will spark and I’ll follow the scent, gathering clues and finding answers until I either hit a wall or finally wake up to the fact that I’m on one hell of a journey and just go with it.
If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsman (dead or alive), who would it be?
My Danish great-grandfather was a wallpaper hanger. I really would love to see him in action (my mom was a wallpaper hanger as well and used many of his tools). I’d love to peek inside the studios of CASAMIDY. Their work gets my heart a-pumping! To me they embody authentic craftsmanship; they honor their art by believing it is more important to create beauty than just more stuff to buy. I’ll bet their work spaces are so inspiring — I’d like to just go soak it all in.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
My son’s watercolor of a shark and my daughter’s series of five abstract paintings. They are spectacular.
How do you get out of your creative ruts?
Wait patiently. Although this is not easy for me, I do not force outcomes. I spend time reading and practice being present, knowing that this moment is all that there is and everything I need I already have. If all else fails, I go shopping.
Where would you like to be in ten years?
Traveling around the world.
Business wise I would like to expand my product line a bit. I have no shortage of concepts that I want to bring to life! I’d like to open a store that brings meaning into people’s lives, not just more stuff. My intention is to enlighten lives through Luminology and my products and business.
