Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Marie Khediguian and I am the silversmith behind MarKhed Design. Both my formal education and work experience have been in the field of architecture where I developed solid critical thinking and problem solving skills. Silversmithing, which began as a way to de-stress after work, has slowly transitioned into a rewarding full-time job. This shift was inspired by my very first sale — imagine that someone could cherish one of my pieces as much as me! This inspired me to quit the safety of my job in architecture and launch myself into this new business. Right now I live in the beautiful Canadian city of Montreal, Quebec, where I was born and raised. I have a mostly messy studio in my one bedroom apartment that I share with my boyfriend and two dogs. It can get squishy, but I’m so happy.
As an Armenian Canadian, I knew that jewelry was in my blood. Growing up, my uncle had his own basement jewelry studio. Many of the suppliers with whom I work are part of the Montreal Armenian community as well. My work has connected me to yet another aspect of my culture and creative history.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I love puzzles of all kinds. Every morning you can find me on the couch with my morning coffee, the radio going (on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and at least one crossword and a sudoku.
Most importantly, I am unabashedly a dog-obsessed girl. I am a devoted dog mom to my dachshund and West Highland terrier and enjoy all my time spent with them. Apart from that, I am quite simple to please. I love hanging out with my friends, my boyfriend and my family playing board games and eating.
What first made you want to become an artist?
I knew I loved art going all the way back to art classes in high school. I was very good at looking at paintings and interpreting the meaning or the subject. It was only in architecture that I discovered my ability to create. We were taught the basics of drawing and we had a freehand studio class which I really loved. I had a range of ideas and emotions that I wanted to share, but I also knew I had not yet found my medium.
When I began making jewelry, I was in love with the repetition and the physicality of making these delicate pieces. It takes a lot of patience, but I find it’s a very meditative and calming process. The moment I realized that I could make jewelry every day and not tire of it, I knew I had finally found my calling.
Please describe your creative process.
One of the most important parts of my day is reading through design, art and photography blogs, picking out my favorite images. I make sure to look at everything around me and when I see something I like, I always ask myself, “Why am I attracted to this image?”. I always try to distill this into a concept that I might be able to use in my jewelry.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
I cherish so many of my handmade possessions, but my favorite right now is a carnival mask I picked up in Venice, Italy. It was so amazing to talk to the artisan in his beautiful mask shop about his love for the handmade object. It was wonderful to connect with a stranger over a shared passion.
What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
I get a lot of messages from artists asking for advice and I try to respond personally to each one. Other times, I will write blog posts on popular topics. The most important piece of advice is to take advantage of the community that Etsy fosters. I am part of two great teams here on Etsy (the Artisan Gallery Team and Team Worldwide) and I have to say that joining these has been the best thing I’ve done. Each team provides me with something very important — Team Worldwide is where I can channel my love of making treasuries and the Artisan Gallery Team provides support and like-minded friends dedicated to handmade arts and craft. When faced with a business dilemma, I have often turned to my team for advice.
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
I love making treasuries and sometimes find myself glued to my computer, searching for artists and beautiful creations to share with others. It can border on obsession. I LOVE the “You Might Like” section that tailors finds to your favorites and purchase history. It has definitely inspired me to purchase many items!
I want to see enhanced features for organizing and searching through sales and conversations.
How do you promote your work?
I look at promoting like investing — diversify! I have purchased advertising spots on blogs that I think have readers who would be interested in my work. Primarily, I try to create a relationship with my fan base through my Facebook fan page. I do regular giveaways to my fans and also ask for their opinions on my work.
In ten years, where would you like to be?
This is a tough question because I really live my life with the motto, “Roll with the punches.” I know that I would love to have a larger studio, somewhere I could teach others the art of silversmithing. I really love talking about jewelry making and working with people to achieve their creative ideas.
The bottom line is that I absolutely adore where I am right now. In ten years, I truly hope that my business is going strong so that I can keep making jewelry and sharing my art with the world.
