Tell us a bit about yourself.
We are Janet and Trisha, sisters and business partners who currently call New York and Washington, DC home. Despite spending very little time together in the past eight years (because of school and jobs in different states), our interests seem to have independently converged. Now we’re in business together! Our aesthetic has developed to the point where we unwittingly buy the same clothes 2,000 miles apart and have to call each other before trips to make sure we don’t bring the same things.
We’re both bag ladies with an affinity for neutrals and scarves. We’re afraid of glitter, thanks to a past life full of dance performances, and we both dislike answering the question, “Where are you from?”. We always have to awkwardly explain that we moved around a lot, but our dad isn’t in the Navy and that we lived in Singapore, but we’re half Chinese. Notable differences between us: Janet eats meat and Trisha wears glasses.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
We probably spend too much time online reading blogs, window shopping, and talking to friends. In real life, we like to dance around the house, go on hikes, clean, knit, eat tacos, make lists, eat guacamole, and watch old MGM movies.

What first made you want to become an artist?
We grew up making and fixing things at home, from crocheting hacky sacs for our friends to helping our dad re-tile the bathroom floor. Our grandfather became a painter after he retired and our mom used to sew her own clothes and make beautiful calligraphy pieces. We were always surrounded by makers and enjoyed art classes in school, but Janet really, really wanted to be a zoo keeper and Trisha just liked making forts.
College proved an obvious resistance to art for us. Trisha thought she wanted to do economics, but got a degree in civil engineering before going to grad school for architecture. Janet started out in mechanical engineering, then moved on to interior design, and ended up finishing school with a degree in graphic design. It wasn’t until after we graduated that we realized we enjoyed the things we were doing on the side more than what we were learning in school. Making things is just so darn satisfying. Maybe we were in denial all those years!
Please describe your creative process.
With backgrounds in graphic design and architecture, we tend to sketch and prototype a lot. And having come from such computer-driven fields, we now prefer hand-drawn design and working with natural materials such as cotton and linen.
Our creative process is balanced between time together and time apart. We brainstorm separately and typically end up with too many ideas when we come together. We schedule production weeks when stock is low, print non-stop for five days, then indulge in a 24-hour recovery period which often involves watching copious amounts of HGTV, Project Runway, and Say Yes to the Dress.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
Our grandfather was a news photographer in LA and a specialist photographer for the Navy during WWII. He didn’t end up making a career out of photography, but he continued to photograph throughout his life. After he retired, he also discovered watercolors. Growing up, we always had his beautiful photographs hanging in our house. Whenever he visited, he would give us drawing, painting, and composition lessons. After he passed away, we each inherited some pieces for our own homes and when it came time to name our studio, it only seemed fitting to name it after him.
What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, because you never know! There’s virtually no barrier to entry, and you’ll always wonder if you never try. It seems like it’s a lot harder to get noticed these days, but if you have a good product and good pictures, you’ll rise to the top.
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
We’re really loving all of the new features. For us, Etsy always stood out from other marketplaces because of the strong community aspect. The new Activity Feed seems to be building on that spirit and we love making treasuries now that we don’t have to fight for them.
It’s also great to see better tools for sellers. We love the new Listing Tools on each item page (especially the copy button!) and we’re happy to see improvements to the Sold Orders page. A shipping calculator by postal zone would be awesome and it would be great to see our Items Currently for Sale sorted by section. Oh, and please make the announcement bar the full width of the shop already!
How do you promote your work?
Initially we were very tentative about approaching more established bloggers and shops, but we quickly learned that this is one of the most positive, supportive communities you can participate in. These days we like to blog and tweet. We also love Pinterest and just started using Facebook. We recently started a newsletter but are still trying to figure out what to include in it.
In ten years, where would you like to be?
Hopefully we will be geographically closer to one another and continue to grow our business. We’d both like to live close to nature and wouldn’t mind having a new and improved studio space. Right now we are in a basement with awesome lighting and a hodgepodge of rejected furniture!

so sweet to have such a great family story. We all grow up with the weight of history on us. Our ancestors dwell in the attics of our brains as they do in the spiraling chains of knowledge hidden in every cell of our bodies. ~Shirley Abbott

I stumbled across your shop at Christmas and ordered my friends some small journals to stick in their gifts - they love them! you can see the influence of architecture in your work - I think that's why I was drawn to it - balanced, clean, simplistic. bravo :)

I too was taught and inspired by a grandparent - my grandmother. I would sit with her for hours learning to knit, crochet and embroider. It's great to hear that the generational passing on of the arts and crafts continues. Congratulations and great work.

Rejected furniture always seems to be the best. My studio has an old file cabinet that weighs a ton and one of my favorite things is the old oil radiator that keeps me warm in these cold months. Congrats on your success and hop you have a very fruitful 2011.

I loved this feature!!! It was so real and down-to-earth. I was reminded of two of my four sisters who have a shop here together, and I surely empathize with enjoying what you do on the side more than what you're (for me) doing for a paycheck. I actually like what I'm doing in school, which is graphic design, a slight change from the interior design I'd chosen for a major.
