I’m Lotte Bongers and I’ve lived in Utrecht, The Netherlands for 11 years now. Utrecht is an old city with beautiful canals and a large shopping center. I live in a nice house with my handsome boyfriend and three fuzzy Maine Coon cats. Every Saturday I stroll down to the biggest national fabric market to purchase supplies and have a chat with the stallholders, a weekly treat for me!
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I love to dance, go to the movie theatre and take walks at night. I also enjoy yelling into the wind while riding my bike, playing a tremendously bad game of squash with my friends, drinking cappuccino any place, any time (foam mustache is a must!) and spotting the ugliest fountains in the city.
What would be the title of your memoir? Why?
You Can Only Fly When You Know Rock Bottom.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I get inspiration from everything around me. My brain is constantly saving everything I see and hear, often without even realizing it. Strange people, situations, colors, animals, conversations — but mostly it’s my own weird brain and a feeling that comes together.
What does handmade mean to you?
Standing out from the crowd and walking away from the herd! Supporting designers and fresh new ideas, being an individual.
When did you know you were an artist/maker?
I’d rather not call myself an artist; I’m more of a creator. I’ve been creating from the day I could hold a pen.
If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsman (dead or alive), who would it
Maybe it’s weird, but no one in particular. I admire everyone who’s making leather bags and wallets with their own screenprints. This is what I would love to do in a couple of years, so even a glimpse would be amazing.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
My little nephew gave me his first 3-D drawing. It shows three ladybugs spreading their wings. I almost cried when he told me he made it just for me. It’s hanging in my living room and makes me happy every time I look at it.
Where would you like to be in ten years?
I would like to still be the crazy person I am today, but with a lot more knowledge. I’d love to screenprint leather bags. And maybe I could have a little squirrel baby that looks just like me!

Actuallly, I feel like you about being considered a Creator rather than an artist. Making antler beads, using semi precious gemstone beads, etc... I find my favourite part is creating a one-of-a-kind item of jewellery. Congratulations and the best of luck to you now and in your future endeavours.
