This weekend’s Get the Look Decor is inspired by the colorful home of Cynthia, where she’s lives with her husband and three children. How would you describe your home decorating style?
I am addicted to saturated intense colors but try to tame my love of color with lots of bright white — white slipcovers, white quilts, white dishes. The white keeps it modern and is a great canvas for bright colors. The whites and neutrals are necessary to keep our house from looking like a preschool classroom. It’s a fine and dangerous line. I love brightly painted furniture and never feel too committed to those bold colors. My turquoise desk has been painted 3 times in 7 years! The bright colors keep our home casual because that’s who we are — a casual family who enjoys simple things like cooking together and pounding out tunes on the piano. We all play the piano, although some better than others. Not naming names, though.

Did you decide to decorate in this style or was there an evolution to your decorating process?
I have always loved bright colors in my home. What has evolved is how I use those colors. When we moved into our home five years ago everything was beige — beige walls, beige tile, and beige carpet. Life is just too short for beige and I needed color, but this time in a more mature manner. In my previous home I wasn’t afraid to put dark apple green on the walls, but in this home — our forever home — I wanted to use color more selectively. I was done with painting dark colors on the walls only to tire of them in less than a year. I traded in bright paint and instead opt now for bright accessories like pillows and glass vases. My pillows change every few months, which is so much easier than repainting walls. Slowly, the brown and beige are being eliminated, or in some cases, just masked.

What inspires you when it comes to decorating?
Having been raised in California, we took the year-round warm weather for granted. (Let’s be honest, my husband doesn’t seem to mind the cold — just me.) Now that I live in Utah, I realize how much I crave warmer climates. I painted my family room walls yellow as soon as we moved in to make up for the warmth I miss during our long Rocky Mountain winters. I love the nubby texture of natural linen and lately am obsessed with geometric prints — especially in fabrics.

What is your favorite part about your home?
My hickory wood floors. I had them stained a bit darker last year and I couldn’t be happier. I can’t wait to eventually add more wood floors throughout my home — although my kids insist on having a soft rug to lounge on for TV watching. So I compromised and bought a modern shag area rug that is soft underfoot and doesn’t cover up too much of the hickory. I also love that the main living area of our home faces south. I can usually find a bright window to sit in, even on the coldest winter day when snow is piled everywhere.

Does your home hold any strong memories?
Two years ago we had our annual Christmas party and invited over 50 people, thinking that, during the busy holiday season, hardly anyone would come, and that those who did come would stay maybe a few minutes. We were wrong! Everyone showed up for the entire time and we had people crammed in every room, including up the staircase. Maybe they all came to enjoy a Mexican dinner of refried beans, rice, and carnitas? (My mother is from Mexico and still teaches me all her magical techniques.) Or maybe they stayed because we are super cool people? I tend to believe the latter. It was a happy night, although a little too crazy. Every time we have friends and family over, great memories are created — usually over a bowl of Indian curry or a plate of tamales. Good food always helps solidify memories, at least for me.

Aside from being a full-time mom, Cynthia loves sewing, modern machine embroidery, cooking from scratch, and any DIY project. Her Etsy shop, meringuedesigns, is filled with cheerful pillows, banners and DIY projects which she whips up on her sewing machine between kissing boo-boos and cooking family meals. I think the bright yellow is such a cheerful color it's bound to keep things sunny even when they aren't. This is a good color cue for those of you who lives in states where it isn't sunny a lot but you Coloradoans have lots of sun, even when it snows!
