Get the Look Decor: The Modern Bungalow

ChristineThis weekend’s Get the Look Decor is inspired by the Jacksonville, Florida 1930s brick bungalow of Brittni Mehlhoff where she lives with her husband Jeff and two pets, Luna and Nugga. They have lived in their colorful, art-filled home for the last four years, where they have melded their modern DIY aesthetic with the home’s more traditional accents. How would you describe your home decorating style?
I tend to define our decorating style as organic modern with a pinch of eclectic. I love mixing and matching free-styled, DIY, and (very) low cost furniture pieces with the more expensive, modern staples that we’ve purchased along the way. But it’s also been a challenge infusing our design and decorating sensibilities with some of the original elements of the home that we both wanted to keep, like the wood molding and fireplace (which are anything but modern). It’s been a lot like putting a puzzle together, mixing those more traditional accents that we don’t want to change with our style. Luckily though, when it comes to handmade and vintage, my taste is much more eclectic, which has brought in a homey and comfortable vibe.

Where are your favorite places to shop for home items?
Well, considering at least 90% of my art collection is from Etsy, I’d have to say it’s my first stop when it comes to art and smaller home decor items. Some of my favorite Etsy shops right now are CoMod, Kari Herer Photography, You Sentimental Idiot, Jean Pelle, Annamaria Potamiti, William Dohman, and Selflesh.

I pick up most of my vintage pieces from local shops and estate sales, with a few online purchases sprinkled in. And for furniture, we always go to our friend Shaan’s shop, Nest Living, which I’d highly recommend if anyone is looking for modern furniture. When I can’t find exactly what I am looking for, I make it myself, like any “good” DIYer would do.

What is your favorite part about your home?
Without a doubt, my favorite part of our house is my office. I work from home, so I spend an insane amount of time in front of my computer. And I wanted a space that felt inspiring and cheerful. So, I keep my favorite and most special pieces on my desk and on the wall in front of me.

Does your home hold any strong memories?
It’s the first home Jeff and I ever purchased, and so I feel a real sense of attachment to it. The house is not without its faults, but the memories will be hard to say goodbye to when we outgrow it.

In July of 2008, Brittni quit her job as a high school art teacher in order to dedicate her life to her passion of promoting other makers, designers, artists, and vintage boutiques.
