Guest Curator: The Brick House

Designer and adamant DIYer Morgan Satterfield shares her continuing thrifty home transformation, latest vintage finds and design projects on her site, The Brick House. Based near Palm Springs, the mid-century style and desert modernism of the locale is reflected in her efforts to create a gorgeous modern pad with a frugal sensibility. Along with her partner and two dogs, she is slowly remaking this former halfway house into a stylish modernist home, one budget friendly project at a time.

As readers of my blog can attest, I have a nutty passion for all things vintage — particularly anything you can slap on a wall, hang from a ceiling or relax your butt on. I’m a perpetual furniture swapper and hunter of all things retro, a little unusual and totally amazing and have had more coffee tables than should be legally allowed. So, for a little bit of that desert modern style that I adore, here are a few beautiful pieces that’d make any interior just a little more fantastic.

1. BAM. This delicious 1970s Chrome WOW factory gets the lighting job done and with style.
2. A great Danish wall hanging is hard to find, but serves as a great bit of unexpected art.
3. All your good plates and servers have to go somewhere, better in a fantastic teak credenza than on the floor.
4. Having some place to eat always helps. Keep it in the ’70s with this unusual dining set.
5. Great rugs make great meals.
6. Always mix metals, a touch of brass never hurt.
7. Chill the wine, or champagne if you’re coming to my place, with this Jens Quistgaard classic.

1. If you’re living, you’re sitting. Life’s better on a great sofa.
2. I love a bit of shaggy macrame influence any time of day. A few textured throw pillows keep things casual.
3. The only bikini I’ll put on is that of Eames Wire Chairs. This pair turns me on.
4. Organic is all the rage, right? Get your organic on with this wood slab table.
5. It’s hard to not enjoy a bit of southwestern style in the desert. Do it well with a stunning graphic rug.
6. Laurel is good, brutalist Laurel is best.
7. Certainly not everyone’s taste, but a weirdly alluring portrait painting is my go-to to make any room a little more intriguing.

1. It’s a classic for a reason. Navy + rocker is just sexier.
2. I like this Potence style lamp so much, I have two. Seriously. That’s my house.
3. Kilim pillow? ‘Nuff said.
4. Okay, maybe Laurel is always great.
5. Terrariums? Tiny zombies? YES PLEASE.
6. Love some good ol’ sculptural studio ceramics.
7. A personal favorite. The Franco Albini ottoman is a classic and can sit its rattan awesomeness just about anywhere.
