Artist Rob Ryan‘s studio is located in a cozy nook in Bethnal Green, London. He and his band of merry helpers spend their days paper-cutting fantastic worlds of love, friendship and longing. It’s hard not to feel an emotional response toward Rob Ryan’s work: it’s timeless in its approach and includes positive missives like “Believe in People” and “Our Adventure Is About to Begin.” What could be a greater way to celebrate the world than acknowledging the beauty in the everyday?
Rob Ryan grew up in a military family, moving from town to town as a child. Drawing was his companion. Even today he prefers to work in isolation, with a small group of assistants and his family not far away. He doesn’t need much: just his favorite pencils, some good paper and groovy records spinning in the studio. It’s this environment that allows his love of the world to know no bounds.
Rob’s latest work, A Sky Full of Kindness, is the first children’s book that he has written and illustrated, chronicling a group of birds as they overcome their fears of the world. Fireworks, songs, and nests play integral parts of the journey toward becoming the kind of people we ought to be: kind, helpful, and generous.
UPDATE: Congratulations to Judy Williams of Sea Glass Vintage, winner of the A Sky Full of Kindness Sweepstakes!
What do you think of Rob Ryan’s thoughts on love and beauty in art? Comment below to enter our A Sky Full of Kindness sweepstakes. Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 12 p.m. ET, we will pick one commenter at random to win a Rob Ryan lasercut. (We apologize in advance that this sweepstakes is only open to U.S. folks over 18. Void where prohibited. Download a PDF of the full Rules and Regulations.)

I love the honesty, the heart, and the quality of being genuine in this feature. Rob is and always will be a bright inspiration for papercutters like me, for all artists, and for anyone who needs a reminder to open their eyes just a little further to take in the beauty and love around them. Gorgeous feature of a lovely artist. Thank you! This made my day.

Amazing! Rob Ryan is my absolute favourite papercutting artist. I find it really difficult to find 'positive' fine art these days, most of it is so focused on the negativity and pain in an artists life or imagination. Rob Ryan's work is a breath of fresh air.

Timeless but fresh thoughts, how does Rob Ryan do it? His scarf (look at his shop) with the verses about two people who are separated from each other but can look at the same stars is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Rob Ryan has a genuine heart and it comes through in all of his work-- the poetic statements are always thought provoking. I have a little calendar from 2009 on my desk and one of his prints, his first book and the skirt with his print on it! What he says about love as a concept for his work is fabulous, and so true. When I was in art school, whenever anybody would hint that their work was inspired by a relationship, it was immediately dismissed. But probably each and every one of those people who scoffed at the idea of love as respectable subject matter has been deeply moved by a song, movie, or story about it. It’s a huge part of so many classics within other art forms; why not visual art? I greatly admire Rob Ryan and Julia Pott, who introduced this portrait, for being honest above all things in their work.

I can't imagine the work that goes into each page. And to write a book this way! It's beautiful and the ideas behind it are beautiful also. So, does Rob have love ideas flowing because he is IN love, or loved and lost or always a bridesmaid and never a bride? When I first saw that Etsy had done a video about Rob Ryan, I was perplexed. Why? Because he is already an established artist! While it's true that anyone can sell on Etsy, I thought the collective "undiscovered" talent on Etsy is Etsy's truest treasure. But after watching the video, well, it's hard not to be happy after glimpsing into Rob's world. And now I have a better understanding of the man behind the book that's has been on my bedside table for over a year, "This is for You".

So inspiring. Rob's art just makes me happy. Glad I stumbled on this video just as I'm heading off to bed. It will make for a night of sweet dreams.
