This post is part of the 2011 Holiday Boot Camp program. There’s still time to catch up with us! Sign up for the Etsy Success newsletter and find all the past posts here.
Etsy has been a global marketplace since its conception. There are buyers and sellers from almost every corner of the planet, and things have really been heating up on the international front for some time, not least with the recent launch of Etsy in German. Even our Holiday Boot Camp has sprouted bilingual wings!
In the name of seasonal preparedness, learn how to get the very best out of your Etsy shop. This guide will teach you how to reach out, near and far, to sell both locally and internationally.
Get Some Local Love
One of the easiest ways to get more eyeballs on your items is to make use of the Location Autosuggest feature. This is super important, as it’s currently the only way to get your items to show up in Local Items Search. It also helps your local Etsy Admin shine the spotlight on you!
- Head to Your Account > Public Profile.
- Delete anything you’ve already put in the City field and begin typing your city.
- Be sure to select one of the options that appear from the automatically generated drop-down list.
- Save and you’re done!
Last Orders
Stating your international last-order dates in your Shop Announcement and Shop Policies is a great way to keep buyers informed. It could also save you from an avalanche of convos requesting the same information: “Will it arrive in time for Christmas/the holidays?”
Check your mail carrier’s website for a list of last-post dates. If your items are made to order, don’t forget to add on time for that all-important making!
Australia Post | Canada Post | FedEx | LaPoste | Royal Mail | USPS | UPS
Planning on offering quick-shipping options for your buyers? Make sure your expedited shipping terms are also stated clearly in your Shop Policies. Ask buyers to convo you to arrange payment for any extra costs associated with expedited shipping; you could set up a custom listing with the price built in.
International Shipping Tips
- The next time you head to the post office, ask for a few customs forms to take home. That way you can keep the forms at your desk to fill out as needed for future shipments.
- Don’t fib on your customs forms! Marking your item as a “gift” or undervaluing it is a red flag to customs agents. It’s possible they’ll inspect your item, which will delay delivery indefinitely!
- Don’t make any promises. Shipping internationally will go smoothly most of the time. However, every so often a package can get stuck in customs. Make sure your customers are aware that you can’t be responsible for these delays. It’s nearly impossible to track a package once it leaves your country, unless you use a courier service such as FedEx or DHL.
- You can find more about customs forms, duties and taxes in this how-to.
Local Shipping Offers
- Collect+ is an award-winning parcel service for delivery within the UK, and it is cheaper than Royal Mail for parcels between 2kg and 10kg. UK sellers can get 20% off one order per day (including multiple parcels) until November 31, 2011. Find out more.
- FedEx offers U.S. Etsy sellers special discounts — up to 21%, plus an additional 5% when creating shipping labels at FedEx.com. Full details here.

I'm new to Etsy, but already I have had only international orders (I live in Prague, Czech Republic, so this is pretty normal)...I'm quickly learning that it takes longer than I expected for my packages to arrive, though since I knew that most of my buyers would be other EU country citizens or elsewhere, I got bookmarked the post office's shipping prices and have even put a paper version of it in my 'Etsy Book' so that all I have to do is refer to it...buying a scale that gives weights down to 1gram is also good...like that, I know when I go over one price range and into the next. I learned the hard way that you can't forget that packaging weighs, too, and if you don't calculate that into shipping (especially internationally as the prices are really high and a couple of extra grams my just be what takes you from one price bracket to the next one up when you could have saved yourself money and energy by just pre-thinking your packaging. Also, our post office system (and certainly many others) has several of the forms available as pdf files so it is nice to download those and print them up if you can't first get them from the post office. As for the local tip listing, it would be nice if there was also a break-down by continent or, for example, the EU would fall under one place...I like to look sometimes for place specific items (e.g. Italy, France, UK, etc.) which are all part of the EU so to do so I have to check under each when it would have been really nice if all the EU countries came up under one search listing. Just a thought.

Last week I had two packaged that were lost via the US post office even though there was tracking they couldn't locate the packages and I have had to suffer because of it financially-and due to one of my disgruntled customers given me a negative review. IF etsy could make it easier for people to choose their shipping options it would be fabulous. EX: -insurance -tracking -expedited shipping -first class -priority mail -fed ex

Great tips. And so very true about how you can't track an item after it's left your country. In Holland, it is very expensive to put Track adn Trace on a package, and once it passes the border, it becomes almost useless. (I once sent a package to friends in Spain, and the delivery company basically lied and said it tried to deliver three times but nobody was home. My friend was home sick the entire time!) I wish I were lucky enough to have something like DHL for an affordable price in my country.

Many of our items are eligible for USPS First Class International shipping (under 4#) and we make sure that our overseas friends are aware that this method does not include any type of insurance or tracking and must be chosen at their discretion. Make sure that your shipping terms are clearly spelled out on your shop page and it doesn't hurt to reiterate them if this method is selected.

I love that with Paypal you can print shipping labels even for US First Class mail. But If I'm shipping a package that is too small for that label (mailing tubes for example), I always have "Forever" stamps (US$ 0.44) plus some $0.10 , $0.02 , $1 and Custom forms in my drawer too. I hardly ever go to the Post Office. I usually leave a note in my mailbox to the mail carrier letting him know that I have packages ready to be picked up in the house so he can take them for me. I also add a few ounces when I weigh the package to make sure it won't return because of insuficient postage.

Just to share a lesson I've learned the hard way, repeatedly, sigh,,,,Fedex and UPS are shipping services,,,,they work arm in arm with Fedex Trade Networks and UPS Brokerage so remember that many times the freight invoice is going to be followed by a brokerage invoice for international shipments. Check out the websites http://www.ftn.fedex.com/ and http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/freight/customsbrokerage.html before shipping with these carriers as SOMEONE might have to cough up big $$$,,,,your client or yourself. Postal services are still the cheapest and easiest for brokerage and I stick with them for international delivery myself. Just my two cents, hope it helps someone save some $ and some grief.

Great info. From past experience shipping to Australia can be a problem thru some customs areas, so always ask the buyer if they want it registered, it's a flat $15 more. I had a lady buy a $3.50 item, WANT it, and spent the $15 to get it, avoiding customs openings. So ask! Registered mail takes a bit of work, all addresses are handwritten, no labels of any kind(they can be removed) and all corners must be sealed with brown wet-it tape(fiber). No tape beyond that. Ask a postal person.I learned the hard way but got it down now! I love 1st class international and the majority of people know it can take awhile to arrive. Above all have FUN!

Just a heads up to my fellow Etsy sellers, even though you state in your shop policies that International Shipments are not trackable and can be lost in customs, the buyer can still go through PayPal and get a full refund. As mentioned previously, if you accept Paypal you can ship domestic and international mail right on the Paypal website and use your paypal balance for the cost. It's free to print, and they offer discounted postage rates under what your local post office charges. Check out their "multi-order shipping tool" It's Great, I use it all the time - you can even create and print postage for orders when your customer didn't pay with paypal - I send all my daughter's Christmas gifts this way. The biggest downside to Paypal shipping is that they don't have a First Class Mail International option, but I think Stamps.com does. Remember, unless your item is very expensive or needs insurance, and if it weighs 13 oz or under, it can be shipped using First Class Mail International for somewhere between $1.90-$5.75. If the item gets lost, then you are only out a little plus the cost of your materials - not too much risk, and well worth the benefit of offering to ship Internationally! Convo me if you have shipping questions, I'm happy to help :) Danielle

A tip for shipping small items such as jewelry from a friend who works for USPS: Use 81/2" x 11" padded envelopes rather than the smaller ones. Even though the weight and price might be the same, they are given higher priority. I'm new and don't have a lot of experience but last week I shipped 2 jewelry orders from CA to the east coast in large padded envelopes. They both arrived in 2 days - meaning mailed Mon. morning, customer received it on Wed. It might be a good thing for sellers to know about for holiday shipping - flat rate timing for first class prices!

A word of warning to sellers planning to ship to Canada - I ship internationally frequently, and over the past 3 or 4 months I've experienced a huge slowdown in shipping to Canada via USPS First Class International. What used to take 1 to 2 weeks has stretched to 3 or 4 weeks... and upgrading to Priority doesn't speed things up that much. Often my parcels to Australia and Europe are delivered earlier than Canadian packages that I sent the same day. So when it comes to international shipping, don't assume that distance correlates with delivery time - sometimes packages traveling thousands of miles are delivered faster than parcels going only a few hundred miles.

If you really want to provide us with a great tip, how about a shipping calculator? Yesterday I sent of a package (from my supply shop) that cost me 21.50 because the weight tipped into the next range, though the buyer only paid 6 in shipping. If I had some way of preventing this it would save me an estimated $50 a month on under-charged shipping. Here in Australia it IS possible to track your item once it leaves the country- if you don't mind paying an extra fee that is. A small parcel to the US costs me $4-6, if I want to be able to track it, it will cost me $22. No one's going to pay $22 to have jewelry shipped to them!

WOW, this is all very good info. Thanks for all the comments here. I think I'll check to see if Fedex has any discount for Canadian Etsy sellers. I love Fedex. I have also had good results Internationally with Canada Post. Croatia in less than 1 week. Finland in less than 2 weeks. The customs b/w Canada and US account for the inconsistencies in delivery times between our countries, I believe. Processing time also seems to vary between locations (maybe some are just busier) Our Canada Post costs are high. We are limited to 20mm thickness for a bubble mailer to qualify for a price of $2.90 via air mail. If it's over 20mm the price is $6.95, and now over $7.00 for air mail. This makes it too expensive to offer a gift box as it the box pushes the thickness over 20mm. I've had no problems to date with USPS, commonly First Class International is what the sellers use. Very reasonable prices. I received a special order via Priority International in about 7 business days from the western US. I cannot speak well about UPS as a courier because of alot of bad past experiences within Canada AND generally the customs fees are unreasonably high when using UPS, especially their 'ground' shipping. It is alot of work to research various countries for shipping costs and to prepare the most recent info on shipping deadlines for the holiday season. But I find that it is worthwhile because people shopping are in a hurry and if they have to ask for the info, that's a delay, and they are more likely to move on. Canadians are becoming more aware of Etsy and often times the US based shops don't list Canada for shipping. I have had to contact several shops to ask if they ship to Canada, and then wait for them to get an estimate, to include Canada and then ultimately make a purchase. So if you don't use "everywhere else" and only the USA, when we try to make a purchase, Etsy simply stops us from proceeding. Shipping to Canada does not cost much more than within the USA and you could be missing out on business. I would recommend that Canada be one shipping option, and also use the "Everywhere Else" option. Of course we all have to protect ourself by getting an idea of how much those shipping fees should be. I hope that this info is helpful and I appreciate any feedback and information other people may have on shipping.

I learned a helpful tip in the forums about insurance. Shipsurance.com is a third party provider and you can insure one package at a time and it's very cheap! $1.50 will buy $100 of insurance and peace of mind. A big bonus is a 3 day window for insuring a shipment, meaning I can insure my package going out tomorrow - today, tomorrow or the next day. AWESOME. I am in the process of a claim for a damaged shipment and all seems to be progressing fine - good communication with their customer service inks, etc. Very helpful if your customers are unwilling to pay for insurance and especially for expensive and/or fragile items. Also keep hearing NOT to mark your package fragile - studies show these items get tossed and dropped the most :( Happy shipping :)

Buy a small digital postage scale to accurate weigh in and to answer questions in convo about shipping rates. Rates are easy to find online at the postal site. And don't forget to offer shipping to our service people at APO addresses. It is the same as PRIORITY. Keep a small stash of bubble mailers on hand for small non breakables. International Priority packages with label attached can be dropped into the large self serve bins in the lobby of the post office. Print online, attach to box and you are all set! Smaller FIRST CLASS packages must be handed to the counter clerk at the post office. My International customer base is very large and I appreciate everyone of them!

Great helpful tips! I am in the US and ship alot of International and have made friends with alot of my International customers thru my 3 Etsy shops. So rewarding developing friends and clients abroad! Because my items are mostly wedding related, it is of utmost importance that I have reliability and insurance. Insurance is not an option with me, my shipping prices automatically have insurance in them. Because most of my bouquets are bulky, I have to use the large boxes, which are expensive to ship. But when it is about your wedding day, it is all worth it. I use USPS Priority Mail International and in 3 years have had almost no problem (ok, where's that wood to knock on!). The other advantage to Priority Mail is the tracking, so I will not ship international First Class. Best wishes to everyone who takes the plunge into International shipping. Michele in Michigan, USA

In this case I quoted US only. When I actually took the item in question recently to the PO because I didn't trust the online $$ quote, I found I had two options , but because the item weighs over 4 lbs. it must go Priority to the region the buyer requested...the two shipping quotes were $48 + my box and $58.55 flat rate large box. I have not heard from the buyer again, but I imagine that puts the whammy on a sale.

I think shipping is the toughest part of this situation, especially internationally. If you, and your customer, want it done right, then you're going to have to pay/charge for it. International sales make me sweat. (not in a good way) I'm currently waiting to hear on something in Italy. I hope it doesn't come back to me. Ikes.

My first bebeknits sale was international to Italy! Fortunately my guestimate on shipping charges was fine. I have since sent items to Australia and Canada form the US via USPS and all have arrived fine! Not quickly, but they did indeed arrive!

One of my first international sales was to Reunion Island. Say What! Yeah, that's what I said. I had to look it up to find out where it is. (And for anybody who wants to know, Reunion is a French possession in the middle of the Indian Ocean about 500 miles east of Madagascar.) Talk about shipping costs. Holy Cow! Be prepared.

Don't advise Etsy sellers to use Fedex or UPS for international packages. They charge the receiver insane brokerage fees. When shipping from the USA USPS is the best choice. Usps DOES offer international services with tracking and/or delivery confirmation. It almost seems as if Etsy promotes FedEx because they have some kind of agreement with them (hence the special offer for Etsy sellers). Even though it's not the best option. Please use USPS so your buyer isn't surprised by extra costs on top of the usual fees and taxes!

Being a Beads and Findings seller it is hard to find ways to distinguish ones self from the pack. One of the ways I do this is by packaging my faster sellers in advance and shipping the same day. I also ask for feedback regarding the length of time it takes international customers to receive their goods. This way I can give a rough estimate of delivery time o a new customer from the same vicinity. Thanks, as always some very useful information.

Great tips. For UK sellers would also recommend "Parcels2go" have used it for large international and local items. Also, AirSure at the post office provides tracking and bit quicker on shipping medium items to the USA/Canada. Happy selling to you all over the coming weeks! (\__/) (='.'=) (")_(")

Thanks for the great feedback from everyone. My shop sells vintage, shipping costs are always ugly, buyers have no reality when we ship/package vintage items. The actual shipping cost I pay, I try and offer good values and tack on some of the actual shipping cost in the price, not to scare anyone off. I still come up short so that number comes out of the bottom line. I use Fed Ex ground, it comes with insurance and thanks Etsy for the discount program you established, Hats Off To You! Thank you Have a great $$$$$ holiday to all.

I always use USPS and have only had a couple of problems. I did buy some fabric from the UK which was shipped via the Royal Mail and it took a month to arrive because it was "missent to Thailand" according to them, but it did show up in the end. A lot of customers don't want to pay extra for Priority USPS and their First Class Mail option is a great value and very reliable as a rule.

When I looked into it when I opened my shop, the shipping charges for my 4-pound product to go anywhere but the continental U.S. were so high that I don't think I would make any such sales. If there are hassles with customs forms and trying to track packages on top of that, then forget it. If I sold small, lightweight items, I would look into it again, though.

Yes I definitely think it helps shipping internationally. Most of the time it takes 6 to 10 days, but once in a while it gets stuck in customs and takes even up to a month.. I even had one stuck for 2 months but that is rare... just because it is a busy time...

Great suggestions! I have always used USPS for Etsy and Ebay shipments, International and Domestic. I prefer generating the order myself directly through USPS than shipping through links on both sites..just for the flexibility of rates....plus I have a nice directory of all my shipments with the email links that I can reference back to at any time...

As an International from a country that doesn't really appreciate handmade, I am faced with double the work... I just had my sales in the US until now and all packages were shipped through regular post or customs. They all arrived until now in about 3 weeks and the clients were happy. I strongly agree that there should be more shipping options added to Etsy where you can add a DHL or Fedex or other fast shipping methods... I am missing that feature for the holidays especially. People start buying Christmas gifts in December... shipping takes between 3-4 weeks... so no one even looks at my store now. Locally I can;t rely on anything so all I am left with is to be disheartened and wait for next year...
