Join us at Craft Night in Brooklyn this week to fold tropical fish with origami artist, Benjamin Coleman, a.k.a. bengami. Benjamin creates amazing sculptural works that take the shape of bonsai and other flora and fauna, and it’s such a treat that he’ll be in town to share his expertise with us at the Etsy Labs. This evening’s project is an excerpt from his new book, Origami 101. If you can’t make it in person, I invite you to tune into Livestream at 3:30 p.m. ET to watch a live demo with the glow-fold origami technique for instruction.
About This Week’s Teacher: Over the past three years, origami bonsai has become a way of life for me. From a few simple folds in 2006 that created a perfectly shaped flower, I have built an artist’s life. My current works include origami bonsai ferns and published books entitled Makigami, and Origami 101. I am currently writing a magazine article titled, “Origami Bonsai in Zero G,” that discusses art forms that can and cannot be performed by astronauts.
I consider myself fortunate to have discovered my own creative outlet in origami bonsai. My life has become focused on sharing the history, beauty and simplicity of this traditional art form with others. I have found personal enrichment in developing new and revolutionary approaches to origami bonsai and am living a life of sharing my insights into the art with others.
Score your own copy of Benjamin Coleman’s new book, Origami 101, right here on Etsy.

It is so amazing to see what artists can do with only a single sheet of paper. It is proof that a limited palette can be so powerful and dynamic. Keep it simple and witness the miraculous possibilities!

Love it! Probably the only bonsai tree I would not kill because I forget to water it. The "dummy proof" bonzai. I do best with plants outside......good old mother nature usually gets around to watering them at some point or another. Wonderful works of art.

I have a copy of Origami Bonsai and use it often as inspiration for napkin folds when I have guests. It's a great book with clever, unusual designs and clear instructions. BJC is really talented and he's a fun read, too.
