“There must be those among whom we can sit down and weep and still be counted as warriors.” ― Adrienne Rich
This week’s edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere has Taliesin West, tiny homesteads (reminiscent of today’s “tiny house” phenomenon), iconic letterhead, and eye-popping jewelry design.
Delfina Delettrez‘s designs are not for the tastefully demure. These gilded prosthetics are only fit to grace the most audacious of extremities. [Via Jean Jean Vintage]
As a lifelong Frank Lloyd Wright devotee, I was shocked to realize I’d never soaked in the desert richness of Taliesin West, the Southwestern counterpart to Wright’s disaster-prone home in Wisconsin. Steeped in desert rock and rich earth tones, this long, low piece of modern architectural history blends seamlessly into its arid surroundings. [Via The Brick House]
There was a time, not so long ago, when stationery was your calling card. (I hope to revive the concept!) Far and beyond a witty email signature, your letterhead design provided the recipient with some idea of who you were, how you viewed yourself, and what your company aimed to be. Clever Tumblr blog Letterheady has collected some of the more rare and notable stationery of the last 200 years, and it’s well worth digging into. [Via HUH]
The small house movement seems irrevocably tied to the zeitgeist of the current recession: houses under 200 square feet, convertible beds, lodgings that maximize every inch. However, tiny homes have always existed in some form or another, and if you’re familiar with Laura Ingalls Wilder’s classic Little House on the Prairie series, you’re probably already acquainted with the concept of the claim shanty. Slate recently put together a slideshow of early Americans’ homesteads through the picture postcards sent to relations back east. Dressed in their Sunday best, these photos (and the accompanying letters) provide an intimate view into the new lives of frontier folk. [Via Tiny House Blog]

another FLW home that's off the radar is Falling Waters near Pittsburgh--check it out! love the stationary too. I have been collecting notepads from hotels/motels/lodges/b&bs. they are gifts that keep on giving, better than a postcard in my mind.

wow, you never disappoint! I love that finger ring with the red fingernail...and those letterheads are great finds. Also, I live near Taliesin West, and have never visited....I must make a note to do so! (once we get out of the 100 degree weather here!)

I always love your posts, but this one has to be my favorite yet. So many neat things - the letterhead stationery, I want those back too :) The black and whites with small houses are amazing (my favorite being the last one - to me, despite the size of the dwelling, it says abundance :) Glad you showed Taliesin West. I am fortunate to have visited (I live in the desert) and it is outstanding. The house with all the details, the land that it sits on and the stories you hear on the tour (tour is on the pricey side, but not t be missed). Hope you get to see it ('in real life') soon!

I love the pictures of the old houses! They are so neat! I'm glad we have flea bombs and lice shampoo now though. I can't imagine living in a shack and not being able to fight the insects/parasites! I'm not about to fry any bugs up either!

Love the Frank Lloyd Wright house! Strange...I was just watching a documentary on Julius Schulman, the greatest architectural photographer ever and there were soooo many beautiful homes that included some of his houses along with many other architects of his time.

Oh P.S. Falling Water was one of the most beautiful of Wright's places I've visited. During the tour I looked over several times to see a Picasso, Tiffany lamp and a Diego Rivera piece(s) right by my side!

I've always had an affinity for personalized letterhead, seemed to always say something about the person or business that went beyond words. I had to stop and think of when letterheads became a thing of the past...or at least not so artsy?

Such interesting imagery... The eye, nose and mouth piece takes me back to one of my favorite curious questions... If a cyclops cries, do the tears come from the left, or the right corner of they eye? Have a curious day!

I find the small house photographs interesting and provocative. A group with a pig, a dog, and chickens with a small house made of a trunk of a tree and grass-made bricks or something similar and a man (?). Also, the lady with a guitar and house. The pictures stimulate many questions and doesn't seem to answer any.

The overall theme here is parallel to what I am experiencing at this very moment. The concept of "home" has been an elusive one to me for the past three years, having packed a suitcase and moving from my hometown of Detroit to Los Angeles. I explored many options of housing, including toying with the ideas of homesteading and building my own "tiny house" from a shipping container. No matter what steps I took toward nesting, however, I never felt at home. Tomorrow I pack up my jewelry-making supplies and my life and head back to Detroit, my home. I will undoubtedly create my own letterhead stationery, with which I will correspond with the friends I've made in L.A.
