“The slight silken scrape of her knock-knees when she walked quickly was, I repeat, highly prized by me. I thought that if I were a locust such a sound would send me soaring over mountain ranges.” — From Saul Bellow’s Humboldt’s Gift
This week’s edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere has roller derby queens, re-imagined book covers, ancient artifacts and colorful sunsets.
What does the sun’s rise and descent look like in different parts of the world? Photographer Eric Cahan catalogued all of the colors the sky can hold. They’re mesmerizing to contemplate. [Mary and Matt]
Roller derby has a long history. It originated in the 1930s as an endurance sport and quickly morphed into “sports entertainment,” with colorful uniforms, predetermined winners and bouts appearing on television as early as 1948. (Which is when this LIFE Magazine spread was photographed, as a matter of fact.) Contrary to societal mores of what constituted a “lady” at the time, these headstrong women set a precedent for athleticism and pluck. [Via How to Be a Retronaut]
Taking the idea of “what if?” to heart, illustrator Lizzy Stewart has put her individual stamp on classic book covers, re-imagining the illustrations her way. I’m fond of Wuthering Heights, but you probably knew that. [Via Wolf Eyebrows]
And now, a few atypical Greek artifacts, courtesy of blog what is this?. No muscular nudes or Doric columns here!

I was just soaking in the sunset last night as I was driving. It was the most surreal colors of peach and lavender. Not a blue tone in sight. Love! And WOO HOO for roller skates!
