“We are all old-timers, each of us holds a locked razor.” — Robert Lowell
This week’s edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere has cowboy poets, a sculptural village, LED tentacles, and moody, layered paintings.

Agnes Baillon has created an expressive collection of busts, sculptures, and characters, all eerily similar. Baillon leaves the features of her forms soft and malleable, explaining that “details such as hair, like references to specific periods, can stifle the imagination of the viewer; I prefer to leave them out or not clearly defined, allowing the viewer to unconsciously project personal experience, as if looking into a mirror.” [Via Hello Neest]
Clare Grill‘s paintings have a depth and tactile quality that make me want to reach out and scratch. The artist’s inspiration has an origin in childhood play: “My sister and I pretended we were birds in the fall and made giant nests of sticks under the bushes in our front yard. In the winter, covered in snow, they were reindeer nests. We drew maps to take on walks around the block so we could look for the wolf we imagined was hunting our house. We spoke pretend languages. We believed whatever we wanted and trusted everything we were told…” [Via Butter + Brass]

Undersea creature or Venus fly trap? Nacho Carbonell’s Luciferase project — which in Latin is a photon-producing enzyme, present in the luminous organs of certain plants and animals — evokes the bio-luminescence of deep sea blobs and ferocious, sticky tentacles. All this and more in resin-coated LED lamps. Lovely. [Via Design Boom]
Where have all the cowboys gone? To the Cowboy Poetry festival, obviously. Photographer Jay B. Sauceda’s latest project, All Around Cowboys, documents men who revere what the West once was, as well as their precious bon mots. One ended his interview by stating that he’s ”spinnin’ guns and twine. Spinnin’ yarns that rhyme. ” Be sure to check out the slideshow for more information on each character. [Via Design Work Life]

stunning finds, thank you so much for introducing me to these amazing artists. I just finished reading "Breaking Clean" by Judy Blunt, and the cowboy portraits just resonated with her story of growing up on a farm.

This is one of my favorite's so far! I love the sculptures of people. They help you to really look into them because they have no defining hair style which is what people recognize others immediately for. Great stuff :) Thank you so much for this.

Not only does Agnes Baillon's comment about her work: "allowing the viewer to unconsciously project personal experience" resonate but isn't this how we perceive & experience life for the most part? Love the purity of her work. Thanks so much for this.
