While Americans were obsessed with tail fins on their cars and transistor radios in their hands, Leo Fender set to creating one of the most legendary American designs, the Fender Stratocaster. The guitar of choice for musicians such as Buddy Holly, Dick Dale and Buddy Guy, the Strat captured the popular surf rock sound of the time and continued on to revolutionize popular music.
Presented by The Big Picture, this film shot by Forrest White in 1959 documents the daily life in the Fender factory, showing both men and women handcrafting each guitar. Even Leo Fender himself can be seen in the second shot. Watching the short film now, it’s wild to think that every single guitar touched by those hands during that year is now worth upwards of $25,000. So if you know your grandfather’s old Fender guitar is hiding somewhere in the attic, go on a treasure hunt and revisit the beauty of such a handmade gem.

Wow, this is great, such an iconic guitar! Amazing to see the guitar body being cut from that big chunk of wood like a knife through butter. Looked like hard graft though.

An absolute joy to watch. 6 years ago I applied a vintage finish to my fender telecaster and it was doing that that started me off on the path that led to me re-finishing furniture, opening my etsy store and ultimately stumbling across this video here on etsy. I love Fender.

Great stuff. Over the years while researching notes for CD reissues (what I do when not working the world of inaluxe) I have run across various Southern Californian musicians who also worked various roles at Fender. Most of them started before before the CBS buyout in 1965. The company not only provided instruments for musicians, but also offered them a steady wage to help enable them create music. Cheers Jason - Inaluxe

Oooooo Chappell this was one sweet post! Several years ago I was lucky enough to attend an Eric Clapton guitar auction at Christie's in the city. A number of his iconic Strats were for sale...I remember being amazed when one of them sold for a cool half million!! Turns out that E.C. bought it to keep for himself which was a nice gesture since all the proceeds went to his Crossroads rehab center. Looks like back in the day Fender could have been an original Etsy shop...totally handcrafted!!
