Since Etsy launched on June 18, 2005, our community has been global. In fact, the very first order occurred when Etsy was a mere three days old, and the first order from a buyer outside the U.S. happened the same day. Two days after that, the first sale was made by a seller outside the U.S. Since those humble beginnings, the Etsy community has expanded to 150 countries around the world.
To truly be a marketplace for the world, we have to speak the languages of the world. We’ve been hard at work making that happen. You might have noticed that we opened an office in Berlin and launched a German blog last year. Etsy Labs Berlin is fully up and running with a weekly schedule of events for the community. We are also leading frequent programming and community events in Paris, Amsterdam and London. (We have French and UK editions, too.)
With that momentum behind us, I’m excited to say that we’ve opened up a preview of Etsy in German. Specifically, Etsy in German includes a fully translated site, tools for sellers to create and manage shops and listings in German, and search features to help German-speaking buyers all over the world find what they are looking for on Etsy.
It’s important to note that Etsy in German is not a separate marketplace for German speakers. Etsy is, and always will be, a global marketplace. Etsy in German simply makes the marketplace easier to use for German speakers and extends the reach of Etsy sellers even further. We couldn’t be happier to begin offering a very warm welcome to German speakers on Etsy. Willkommen! To see the Etsy in German preview, all you need to do is join the Etsy in German Beta team and then read these instructions — in German and English, of course.
Etsy in German is the first step in our mission to bring Etsy to everyone around the world, in the languages they speak. The work behind the Etsy in German preview provides important infrastructure to deliver Etsy in other languages, so this preview is truly a beginning. I’d like to thank everyone here at Etsy for their hard work and our German-speaking community for walking hand in hand with us as we make this important step together.
As we continue to roll out Etsy in German, I will be traveling to Berlin for Hello Etsy, Etsy’s first-ever conference on September 17-18, 2011. Hello Etsy is a hands-on gathering for small business owners who want to connect with their peers, learn the skills to find success and independence, and be part of the movement to build human-scale economies. The main conference will be in Berlin, but we will also have events in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Portland that weekend, as well as live streams of speakers. Check out all the details, including a list of our generous sponsors.
We have an amazing lineup of speakers for Hello Etsy, and I’m humbled and honored to be sharing a podium with them. My topic is “finding your courage.” Making art, starting a business, and opening yourself to the scrutiny of the world requires a lot of courage. When I look back on my own life, there have been many times when the road was uncertain and I had to dig deep in the face of fear and take a leap.
Every day, I’m impressed by the members of Etsy’s community who take their own leaps with creative endeavors. So, I would like to hear from you. How do you do it? How and where do find your courage? I’ve started a thread in the Forums and am looking forward to hearing your stories and highlighting some of them in my talk in Berlin. I want to help the audience learn from the Etsy community and find courage themselves. I look forward to your stories, and I hope to meet some of you in Berlin, or elsewhere in the world!
Chad

Hi Chad, Thanks for checking in. I love many of the quotes by Ayn Rand. Such as... "The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me." "Joy is the goal of existence, and joy is not to be stumbled upon, but to be achieved, and the act of treason is to let its vision drown in the swamp of the moment's torture." "Live and act within the limit of your knowledge and keep expanding it to the limit of your life."

Being an artist, being creative, is an act of giving. It's about being a part of the world and you come to know that there is a niche for all styles and kinds of wonderous creativity....whether you think you are good, whether anyone else thinks so ...that should never be the criteria. Just make it happen ! Narcissist Ayn Rand is the opposite of creativity.

Can't make it to Berlin or other U.S. sites but I'm genuinely excited to find this important speaker on the Brooklyn schedule: ' Matthew Crawford, The Case for Working with Your Hands Matthew B. Crawford is a philosopher and mechanic. His New York Times best-selling book Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work brings alive an experience that was once quite common, but now seems to be receding from society— the experience of making and fixing things with your hands.' Thank you, Chad!

Will it be actually possible to have the listings in German as well? Or have it listed and displayed in German and English at the same time? I'm bilingual and so far the German etsy has been so clunky that I just kept posting everything in English.

Wow this is amazing, and very cool. As far as taking a leap I just started selling on etsy again. This is the fourth time I've attempted selling my bead work. I just take that leap because it has always been on my mind to run a small business like this and now that I'm finally letting myself turn into and adult I also need to let myself follow my heart. Thomas Leland said that "It is courageous to let you heart lead the way", I'm simply following my heart know that this may fail, or knowing that I'll have my items posted for months or maybe even years but if I don't let myself do this now I'll regret it. I've been regretting it. I've also had a horrible summer and that made me take the final step, the jump of the diving board to do something with what little time I have left before I return to my final year of college. Lady Gaga (before she became Lady Gaga) wrote in a song "in a world unknown you gotta hold your own". This is my holding my own, in the among the weeds of depression, challenges, uncertainty and fears this is my holding my own hoping that the talent God has given me will be enough to make a little cash but more importantly do what I love and share that love via my handiwork to the world

Although we are a part of America, it can sometimes seem like Hawaii is a foreign country, especially in the way that many US e-commerce sites relate to us (or don't relate). Thanks etsy for making the expanse of ocean between Hawaii and the continental US "smaller". I would say that 25% of my purchases have been from foreign customers, coming from Hawaii...that IS an accomplishment! Mahalo!

Etsy won't be a really global enterprise as long as so many american sellers cannot be persuaded to ship outside the US. Working on that will have more impact than Etsy on an other lenguage. Most germans can read English anyhow.

Please don't change the language for countries where most people speak English as their second language (such as Scandinavian countries or The Netherlands). Because it's a lot easier to write your product descriptions in English when the entire site is in English.... When you're reading English you start to think in English, when you're reading your native language, you have to translate and that's a lot harder!

Congratulations! It is so nice to see that Etsy is multilingual. As a Latin American and Spanish speaker I feel a little sad seeing that Spanish doesn't seem to be a priority. Etsy is missing so many buyers and sellers in the region. I myself know a lot of exquisite artisans that cannot sell on Etsy because of the language barrier. Also, Latin America is a huge market of middle income countries that have not been affected by the global economic crisis yet.
