The days after Thanksgiving are the biggest shopping weekend of the year. If you’re like me, you’ll be hiding from the big-box stampedes, streaming a few episodes of your new favorite show (Downton Abbey, anyone?) and hunting the web for unique and thoughtful gifts.
On this notoriously discount-focused weekend, you may be asking yourself, “How can a small business compete with slashed prices on mass-produced goods?” Here’s how — you don’t. Those discount stores can’t compete with you in many ways. You’re small, flexible, honest, unique, charming, friendly, real, approachable. Use your own small-but-mighty qualities to offer an enticing promotion that highlights the extra special thing that makes you, you.
Don’t cater to bargain-hunters, and instead consider your unique buyers. Who are they? Who are they shopping for? Why do they choose to support your small business? What kind of discount or offer is just enough to entice them to buy (and maybe buy more)?
You may have to get creative to make sure this promotion doesn’t interfere with your bottom line. Good thing you’re nimble and inventive! Here are a few creative (and less costly) options to get you thinking:
- Include an add-on that increases value to the buyer but costs you very little.
- Do you have stock that is just not moving that you might have to get rid of soon? Can you afford to offer these as freebies?
- Can you think of a creative way to gift wrap your items using recycled materials? (Photograph this and offer it as a this-weekend-only promotion!)
- Promote a giveaway. Offer a raffle ticket to every buyer over this busy weekend and give away one item. (Remember to read up on your state/countries contest laws!)
- Scale back the promotion and encourage fans. Have you connected your Twitter and Facebook accounts? Offer a discount to only those who sign up.
- Here’s an idea from Natasha of Loopedwithlove4U: ”Anyone who purchases something from my shop on Friday will receive a coupon for a percentage off one special order item to be redeemed after Christmas.” This gives you time to come up with items that are offered at the right price.
Practical Tips for Running Your Sale
- Coupon codes are a great way to track where your buyers are coming from. Create different codes for your Twitter followers, Facebook fans, blog readers, etc.
- Remember to use these tags to be included in Etsy-wide promotions: Black Friday Etsy, Cyber Monday Etsy, and Free Shipping Etsy. Specify the details of your promotion clearly in your item listings, shop announcement, profile and policies page to be sure to cover all your bases! More details here.

There will be sales a-plenty this weekend, so don’t forget to promote your sale in a creative way. If you feel stuck try thinking about what promotions, events, or campaigns have grabbed your attention. Here are a few ideas:
- A fantastic video, blog post, or Flickr pool featuring happy buyers of Christmas past
- A free downloadable holiday card that just happens to also live in the same blog post that announces your sale
- A project your buyers can participate in. Example: “I want to ship an item to each U.S. state and Canadian province this weekend. As the orders come in, I’ll put a star on this map!”
And finally, use the badges below on your blog or website to help spread the word about and promote your sale.

I have yet to sell anything on Etsy. I am usually lost. I did a free shipping coupon but couldn't find the way to attach it to my item for sale. I zeroed out shipping cost on the listings. PLEAAAAAAAASE LOOOOOOOOOOK ok 12,000,000 items soon.. what to do.. what if you where physically in a space with 12,000,000 items you would find nothing or get frustrated and leave. in real life you do not weed trough every item available.. you go to a shop... and that it what people cannot do on etsy... they cannot browse shops... just items.... think about it.. if people could browse shops by the category the shop places itself in that would decrease how much the individual has to search.. i there are people who have success here, but alot who do not. i think a contributing factor is not being able to be found in searches. i have spent $20 in 4 days renewing items in hopes of getting views. i check the stats and i get very few.. i do not think people can find what they are looking for. PEOPLE WHO WORK AT ETSY PLEASE HEAR THIS i really like this idea and hope to be able to browse for shops that fall under my interests.. it will look more like a market place and less like a cluster of stuff.

ok so i just wised up and saw that you can browse all shops by not entering anything... but when i typed in a description i thought would pull up my shop i could not find it.. how does one make their shop fall under the category that they wish?????????????? please advise

I wasn't sure what to do for this shop, I am going to give a free custom ring w/ each purchase for my HandmadeHempMomma(value $5) wonder if I could do the same for my vintage shop? a little cross promoting? I physically couldn't keep up w/ too many sales if I did a big promotion. As a WAHM I spend most of my time w/ my toddler, and can only etsy when she's sleeping :) I love the map idea, not sure how to pull that off though? Also do I really need to go in to each listing and add the promo, b/c that takes too much time? wish there was a better way to mass edit multiple listings. Thanks for the brain candy!

Oh wow! Am truly fascinated with the different promoting ideas people are able to come up with! I had thought of creating coupons from black friday/cyber monday weekend (as that's pretty much what everyone's talking about) but after taking the time to read this article i feel like there is soooo much more to be done -- and possibly in way less costly yet crafty ways. I once had my PayPal account put on hold for this: "Offer a raffle ticket to every buyer over this busy weekend and give away one item. (Remember to read up on your state/countries contest laws!)" According to PayPal you can't require someone to make a purchase to be entered into a raffle, it is against their TOS. They can and will lock your account because of this. Please be aware.
