Putting Your Shop on Top: Etsy’s Most Relevant Search

natalieschwartz

* Search sorted by relevancy is now the default search experience on Etsy. In addition, we have updated our policy on labeling and tagging. This article is still valid, but we recommend reading about the changes here.

Hi there, I’m Natalie. I recently joined Etsy’s product team. In addition to being a baker, crafter and marathoner, I’m working on product marketing and communications, which means I’ll be talking to you about the changes and improvements we’re making to the site, and how you can use them. Today’s topic: ”sort by relevancy” and Etsy’s search.

Some Etsy buyers love the thrill of the hunt — scrolling through dozens of pages, collections, treasuries, and activity feeds, exploring a wide range of items to find just what they were looking for. Others come to Etsy with a very specific item in mind: a yellow sweater, an antique teapot, or a 15-inch laptop sleeve. For those with a specific item in mind, the search box is the first stop.

As a result, improving the quality of our search — and figuring out how to connect buyers with sellers faster — has been one of the most important challenges we’ve faced at Etsy. However, it’s important to mention that since we’ve added “sort by relevancy” as a search option, we’ve seen an overall increase in listing views from search. As such, we have focused our efforts on search sorted by relevancy in particular. In the past several days we have rolled out some changes to search. We realize that it’s been a while since we talked about optimizing your listings for search sorted by relevancy, so we hope that by letting you in on how things work under the hood you’ll understand some of the mystery of why and how items show up in search results. We’ll also share some tips on item listing so your items don’t end up at the bottom of the barrel.

Titles: As titles are the most direct way for sellers to explain what they have to offer, we have given them more weight in our search results. This means that, as a first order of business when listing an item, you should make sure you have accurate and descriptive titles for all of the items you list. Additionally, we look at words at the beginning of your title first (just like your buyers do!) and pay less attention to words toward the end of the title. In practice, you should make sure the first words of your title explain what your item is. For example, your item will be displayed higher in the search results when someone searches for “dress” if you list your item as “Silk Children’s Dress” rather than “Homemade Handpainted Children’s Silk Pink Yellow Dress.” That doesn’t mean it won’t show up at all, but you will see better results if you put the important characteristics of your item at the beginning of your title.

Recency: Even when viewing search results sorted by relevancy, recency of the item matters, especially when searches are broad and return a lot of results. When a broad search (like “dress”) returns over 100,000 results, we give some priority to the most recently posted items.

Tags: Tags (or “keywords”) have always been an important factor in having your items found in search results, as they are your way of providing a short and explicit description of your item. We have also added an additional search feature that gives exact word pairs more weight. When your search includes two or more words, we prioritize results that have those exact words next to each other. For example, if I search for “pink unicorn,” results that contain “pink unicorn” in the title or tags will appear higher than those who title an item “Pink Flowers and Unicorn.”

Want further insights into how to describe your items and which keywords to use in your titles and tags? Keep an eye on your Shop Stats to see how your shop and Etsy items are being found. You’ve been asking for the better search on Etsy, and we’re right there with you! As we work hard to improve search, you can help by following the steps above to list your items so they can be found. We plan to move search by relevancy to the default search setting once we feel this is the strongest site experience. Since search by relevancy is an evolving feature, we want to keep you informed about our changes, and we appreciate your patience and help in making Etsy search the very best it can be.

To learn more about search at Etsy, tune in for our webcast in the Online Labs on Monday, August 1 at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Thanks for the update! Just a quick question though. You mentioned "pink unicorn" as a tag, can we bundle tags like that? Or do you mean the tag pink should be right before the tag unicorn?

etsy should allow for searching 'sold' items for costing research purposes... I realizeetsy claims it's for a 'privacy' reason...but w/o this service, sellers will continue going to ebay for their research....and etsy could easily lose listings due to the 'why should I bother listing on etsy since ebay gets the price I want' factor....

Thanks for the attention to this topic. Treasuries: One wish I have is rules on Treasuries. I wish you could be free to list whatever you wanted on a Treasury, created by me. I think it's an excellent way to shop also. They are like great magazine pages organized by a theme. So many have told me that I can't list my own items, I should list certain items of certain shops (that don't have anything to do with my theme I'm going for), I should post an item and they'll post mine as the recommend rule which I've ignored. Tags: People say I should improve all of my tags. And some say I should be adding items to my shop every day and tweaking it constantly for Etsy to work. Etsy Lush: And Etsy Lush is another layer of rules to getting seen. I still sell the most in person. There is a leap someplace between what I can show here and my trunk shows - live. I wish folks could simply shop "live" on here. Thanks!

Where does the relevancy of "pink" and "unicorn" fall when they're both tags but are separate? If there's room, should we do one tag for each word and another for the combined phrase? That's what I've been doing, and I hope I haven't been doing it wrong. Thanks!

Sounds good! But when I search my exact title, a) other items are coming up first that don't have the exact words I typed, b) other items are coming up first with the word pairs at the end of their titles, and c) a lot of irrelevant things still show up. Is this not rolled out yet? Do I need to renew all my items before they will show up better in "relevant" searches? Also, should I remove the word "vintage" from my titles since it's now required to add it to the attributes section? Thanks for all the hard work on our behalf!

And if it does, would really like to see a drag n drop method to rearrange added (similar to what you have for pictures) instead of adding everything to the end.

Is there any place you can go to look at the total visits in a 24 hour period on etsy as well as how much money changed hands in a 24 hour period? I think this would be an asset if the numbers were good (especially the money part) could keep everyone up and hopeful. I view etsy as the mall and all of us are shops in that mall. If you drive past a mall and there are no cars in the parking lot you might think the mall is going under-but if it where jammed like the day before Christmas you are going to get really excited. Does anyone else think like this or am I alone?

I totally agree with artandeclectica!!! Etsy needs to allow searching on completed items. Since you don't, we DO go to other sites to do this, and sometimes we stay over there to list items while we're at it (after all, I can list 50 items a month there at no charge and only pay a FVF on what sells; it's a gamble I'm occasionally willing to make, especially when I want to move things more quickly!). If you want to be concerned about privacy, then don't let us see who bought the item.

I am a little surprised that admin are now advocating what used to be known as tag stuffing. If the tagging rules have changes & "pink unicorn" is now a legal tag, that's a big anouncement you need to make pronto. Otherwise I do see some definite improvement in the relevancy search recently, so keep up the good work!

I think we need more categories in search. I make handwoven baskets and there is no listing option (whatsoever) that comes close. The nearest thing is home decor which my baskets (which are priced as art pieces - not like a vintage garage sale basket) do not fit into. I also agree that the search options do not work nearly as well as eBay's search engine. I can find specific items on eBay in seconds - on Etsy, it cane take 15-20 minutes to narrow things down to what I want. That will cause some customers to lose interest.

From a buyer's perspective--amen! I do not want to read a lot of adjectives, etc., before I even know what the item might be. And I really would like sellers' tags and titles to be more relevant to the facts. I'll buy more if sellers are clear about what they're selling--and I'll stick around and buy it at Etsy, too! On the other hand, a lot more has to be done to improve the overall categories for times when searchers are willing to peruse the listings--but we can only peruse so much, which means searches need to be narrowed down somewhat more than now. Thanks for getting on this issue.

Some good progress, great tips and welcome to the Etsy Team, Natalie. I have not read through all of the posts, but see some good idea (1) I would like to see "sets" added as a sub under jewelry and weddings, jewelry, etc.I would also like to see more sections available in our shops - 12 at least. Long lines for tags would be helpful too plus the ability to use characters such as 1/2 yard rather than one half yard (which should be hyphenated and can't be). I do think your searching functions are much improved. I would much rather see a descriptive title than a name that means nothing to me. Thanks - keep up the good work!

Unless the rules have changed, tagging something with "pink unicorn" is against Etsy's tagging rules: "You may only use multiple words as a single tag if they comprise a single descriptive phrase (for example: "sterling silver" or "art doll"). Examples of unacceptable multiple words in a single tag: "silver earrings," "beach water sunset," "handbag purse clutch," "green red blue black."" Source: http://www.etsy.com/help/article/483#tagging If tagging "silver earrings" isn't allowed I don't see how tagging "pink unicorn" would be.

This is probably why I have sold nothing in the last 6 weeks. Which makes the whole point of having a listing for 4 months a waste of time. I would also like to point out variations in US language & English - for example I make waistcoats, but in US language this is a 'vest' - in the UK a vest is an undergarment or sometimes a sleeveless t-shirt. Perhaps you could allow for the language differences by making your listings English English friendly please? In the world of fashion we sometimes use the French 'gilet' which is a 'kind' of waistcoat but nearer to a UK meaning than 'vest'. Help please - I'm not getting any sales and want to know why.

I understand the importance of a title now but I mostly paint vintage stencils onto new dishtowels and I don't want all the titles to only say "dishtowel" or kitchen towel or just towel. There are so many cute designs that I want the title to say what it is about...like Spring Flowers painted from a vintage stencil onto a new dishtowel. IntheMoodforVintage says:

Prior to reading your article, I recently redid all of my titles and tags. I made them less "creative" and more "descriptive". I just wanted to let others know what I found out. It takes about a week, give or take a few days to see any changes in your shop stats. You won't have stats for a few days. I was worried that I had made an error in judgement by making those changes, held my breath for a few days and then....viola!! I had 23 hits in one day and from different search engines, which is very, very important. You want other search engines, crawlers, etc to find you as well. From what I read in 6 months of research, with any type of SEO, title and tag changes, it can take up to 6 months to see the improvements. I personally think it takes less time than that and you are correct in having us check the shop stats...it is very gratifying to see one's results change and keep figuring out how to tweak our sites. Thanks etsy, for the analytical info it gives us and for free! Another little important factor is making sure that you use the same descriptive words a few times in your item description box. Sprinkle it here and there to insure that webcrawlers pick up the words.

Good to know - changes to be made. Being a new shop on etsy, I'm also interested in hearing the answer to the "recency" questions that were raised, i.e., new listings only...renewed listings??? Does that also mean that if you have listings matching the search criteria that are not "new listings", will they show up in the search results at all? I think they should if they don't.

Good information, thank you for always looking and working on new ideas. I would also like to see an easier way for a shopper to find a specific store. I might be one word off and then they can't find it. Thanks for listening.

I think search engines, and possibly also Etsy's search feature (?), prefer tag phrases like "family tree chart" and "family tree poster" better than separate tags like "family", "tree", "poster" and "chart". Designerpens, maybe it would be best to say, "Pen handcrafted in zebrawood, European style".

I loved this and have gone through all of my shop titles and fixed them as you have stated. Then I went and search the titles only to find shops like this coming up before mine. There are certain shops that are always on top and their listing titles are not at all what you have suggested we list ours as. One exp. is a listing for" Chalkboard Signs, Rustic, Country" It is listed under "Table numbers" My listing is titled "Centerpiece Table numbers" and hers is way at the top above mine. Another shop that is always at the top in most of her listings...has her shop name as her title and then then item. I am still new to Etsy, yet have heard from some other members stating this to be an on going problem...and now I understand their fustration. Can you help us understand this better..thank you for your time:)

I feel a little queasy at the thought of making "Search by Relevancy" the default--we have been mystified by the workings of the relevancy search for years, and we've tried everything to try to get our items to show up in these searches. We have in fact tried each of the things suggested in this article, and still we find that our items tend to get buried in the relevancy searches, even when we just listed them that day. Eventually we sent an email to the Etsy Admins asking for advice, and we followed the advice we were given, unfortunately still with pretty disappointing results. We've spoken with MANY other sellers who have had this same experience, and we've all been reassured by the fact that search items are sorted by how recently they were listed. We've never had any trouble helping clients to find us. And although we genuinely appreciate Etsy's efforts to improve the site and make life easier for buyers, I would respectfully ask that the admins please, pleeeease think hard before making a major change like this. Sorry to be a party pooper! Just a little scared at the thought of having to go through upwards of 200 listings and frantically make changes to every item until we figure out the formula.

I agree that this information is not very clear- please clarify on the" Relevency" issues listed in these comments and the " tag stuffing issues" as well. iIalso have been testing my tags and titles after renewing and have been amazed at what items get put to the top of the list before mine. Relevency sometimes seems to be a joke. Maybe it would be a good idea to somehow be able to report miss-used tags in order to raise the level of professionalism for etsy. Thanks!

Sorry to be a pain in the tush, but I wanted to add something else after talking with my husband, who is my partner in our shop. We are both Etsy buyers as well as sellers--we do a ton of shopping here. And we have both found that the Relevancy searches don't often lead us to what we're looking for--we find that we get better results by sifting through everything that's out there. It seems like the formula by which these results are determined is just too rigid, and it leaves out a lot of relevant stuff. Also, isn't part of the joy of Etsy the wonderful diversity of artists and items? Isn't it half the fun to stumble across something awesome when you think you're looking for something else? Won't making Relevancy the default take that away? *Especially* since there doesn't seem to be anything that makes it clear to buyers that there are other options for searching. I didn't even know that there WERE multiple search options for the first few months we were here on Etsy. Anyway, we strongly feel that keeping the current system as the default, while making it clear to buyers that they can switch it to search by Relevancy if they so desire is the best option. :) Sorry to bombard everybody. Thanks for listening!

Thank you for these tips! I had a question about tags: in the example, you said that in a search for "pink unicorn," results that contain “pink unicorn” in the title or tags will appear higher than those who title an item “Pink Flowers and Unicorn.” What if I have two separate tags: "pink" and "unicorn"? Theoretically, shouldn't a search for "pink unicorn" bring up my item? I've noticed my items do not come up in a search result when I tag the words separately.

Although I do appreciate the idea of searching faster for what one wants, I also see that this quick approach eliminates the artist who is more poetic or artistic in the naming of his/her artwork. Usually the name I give my artwork jewelry is indicative of its creative state and I mourn that I must title it as "necklace" before "Morning Frost", just to gain an audience.

@ roseandthatch: I agree with you on the creativity of the names - that's part of the creative fun for me. I also see the need for getting your item found. I went through my titles and put the search words at the beginning, then put the name I created for the item after that. There are many excellent questions here...I would really like to see some answers in a followup or post to this article - there are a lot of common threads here. I would hate to see people spend hours making some changes, then find they did it wrong! I've been looking at my stats and it's amazing to see what's going on. I've noticed that one of the top stats for views come to my shop from Treasuries. It hasn't resulted in too many sales, but in marketing, the general rule is (or used to be) someone needs to see your name 3-4 times before they may purchase. That's why I participate in Treasuries, blog feature invitations and Team discussions. I think it will eventually increase traffic (and sales) at my shop. I do appreciate the info from Natalie and will look at my tags. I did change my titles recently, now to work on the tags!

Interesting tips! On the subject of listings, I make ceramic jewellery (among other types) and when I list a brooch I can't choose "ceramic" as the type because in spite of a long list of possibles, it's not there! So I put it in the titles, descriptions and tags. I haven't checked, but what would happen if someone searched for "ceramic brooch"? I also notice when I search for something specific (the last example was "sterling silver chain") all sorts of irrelevant things pop up, eg everything that mentions silver, whether or not it's a chain. This even happened when I homed in on local items (I'm in the UK) - I got about thirty results and only about one-third of them were chains! What's the explanation?

I very much enjoyed this article and will repeat some of this information later in my B'sue Boutiques blog. Your commentary works right across the board for ALL Google searches, as well as Etsy searches, so it's good to learn these things and employ the principles right out of the gate, if your store is new! If not, never too late to start! I am still thinking hard about my listing verbiage, and titles. A book that helped me IMMENSELY was Timothy Adam's HOW TO MAKE MONEY AT ETSY. In fact, it's what convinced me to open an ETSY store. *Everyone!* should own a copy.

We're told that we can't use "silver earrings" as a singular tag. But if you run a search on "silver earrings", ALL of the most relevant listings DO use "silver earrings" as one tag. I'm told that I can't use "nursery art" as one tag...but if a buyer is searching for nursery art, the most relevant listings being shown to that buyer are doing just that. PLEASE either change the rule or STOP punishing those who are following it. I'm begging.

For people confused about 2-word tags: If you read the article, it's about RELEVANCY. It does NOT mean you will be excluded if your item has "pink" or "unicorn" as seperate tags. It just means that is you happen to put "pink unicorn" as one tag and somone searches that EXACT phrase, your item will probably come up before someone who just put "unicorn." Think of it this way... if you search "Hello Kitty" you dont want to find a "Hello" greeting card or a cat t-shirt!

I like the idea of relevancy but the weighing the beginning of the titles doesn't sit well with me. Does there HAVE to be a part weighted? I don't know how this stuff works. All I know is: I sell face cabs, shoppers find me with that term a lot. What I'm getting here is to be found best, I should start all my titles with "Face Cab" in front instead of using first descriptive words like "Blue Stars Sleepy Face Cab". If I'm mixed in with a bunch of search results, that may look fine. If someone is viewing my shop (esp in gallery view) they're gonna see FaceCabFaceCabFaceFaceCabFaceCab I want my artsy stuff to lead in. Guess that's wishful thinking. KWIM?

I thought that is was TAGS were for, and now everything will be listed so generically and not artistically at all. Changing my "Victorious Heart" ring to dull "Winged Heart Ring" Also, it seems to be scrambling everything anyways. When I search "SIlk Ribbon Bracelet" many others show up before my newly listed items with that exact title. Seems like I might be spending less money relisting which I do every day, since that has fallen down the list of importance. I'm unsure of these changes. I'll have to compare my sales to the money I send in relisting fees.

I'm confused. I pulled this paragraph from above and have read it several times and it seems to me you are just getting etsyans to spend more money when you make re-listing your items a way to move up in the searches. Please explain...When you re-list an item it cost us 20 cents each time, so are you telling me that a person that doesn't have a large ad budget is going to be behind those with thousands of dollars to spend? I thought Etsy was designed to help the Small crafters in our country? FROM ABOVE for reference... Recency: Even when viewing search results sorted by relevancy, recency of the item matters, especially when searches are broad and return a lot of results. When a broad search (like “dress”) returns over 100,000 results, we give some priority to the most recently posted items. We also have a “most recent” section at the top of the search results where we will display the top 4 most recent items.

I agree with a previous comment by Mudinmyblood. In such a vast catagory as jewelry, you really made it difficult to show up with all the competition. I spend a great deal of money relisting and renewing for the exposure. Since it no longer will matter in the grand scheme of things, I'm guessing I'll save a ton of relisting money. And when you have a unique enough item, how do you figure out what words people will search for to even show up. Let's see... silver... spoon... antique .. bracelet.. Yup, I just described it and I am no where to be found... Shame...

We are so glad that this has finally happened. We have always used tags and basic titles to list our items. It makes more sense to list an item as it really is. Like a yellow sweater instead of giving it a cutesy name such as Tulips in April. In my opinion, if it is a sweater call it a sweater. We give our tables names as to what they are, like Reclaimed Wood Table. So when a customer is looking for a Reclaimed Wood Table, we pop up right away in all the search engines. I have never understood the need to relist items over and over and we have never done this. We are so happy that Etsy has finally done it this way. Thanks so much!!!

relevancy is great when people are looking for unusual or very specific items. however, many shoppers who use search are more general in their terms. so relevancy results should still be shown in chronological order. because if you are selling a very common item - like "sterling silver hoop earrings," for example - you could potentially NEVER make it to the upper part of the list no matter how often you renew your item. relevancy without recency as the main filter is going to bury items that have keywords similar to thousands of other items. this new sorting is only going to encourage embellished tagging and descriptions making targeted searches muddled. etsy has too many listings for recency to play such a small role in relevancy search results. that's my two cents!

Titles If you take the first words of an item title as relevant, you will force sellers to edit their listing titles in order to be better read for your system and for not people. As a result, in listing titles you will get a mix of adjetives that can or cannot be related with the item in question. Remember there are many users who use popular tags for their items to get exposure, even if they are not related with the items they're selling. Recency This is not working as you describe. In the first page of relevancy I can see items listed from 2 months ago and with tags not relevant, representative nor descriptive for those items. Can you explain how an item listed long time ago could be at the top of relevancy, and been there for the last 24hs at least? Obviously there are other factors involved in the relevancy of a product. Should be great if you let us now which are those factors in order to administrate our listings better. I've been working in every thing you said should be changed and have no results at all! I think relevancy should be a search option and buyers should decide if they prefer to use it or not with the possibility for them to keep it as defult if they wish. But this change you made from one day to other, haven't been wised in my humble opinion. all of this relevancy searching now seems to be all for the buyers, and a big headache for sellers....these new categories for style of item "abstract" "asian"...."zen" are impossible....they may fit at best 10% of my items...does that mean that people will never find my stuff? my views are WAY down over the last couple of weeks. seems like i just start getting some sales and etsy changes something. hello, most of us have "day" jobs and don't have the time to take a couple of weeks to read all of the forums and try to groc wtf the best way to title and tag and categorize one's items might be... there may be a lot of ways to improve etsy, is this one of them...i don't know, but with holidays approaching....you may have screwed a lot of people out of a lot of sales.

With regard to relevancy, if we are not constantly adding or relisting than we fall into the wastebasket, If you're only using the most recently listed. Sooo this benefits Etsy. How does this benefit me as a seller if I am not constantly renewing and relisting ever 5 fminutes?? Which costs me even more.

I have done everything I read in this article over and over, trying to figure out the right keywords, in what order they work etc. and am coming up blank. I even compared some of my listings to listings that are shown on the first pages of my categories search and I am even more confused as to why my items aren't showing up (particularly my paintings) and theirs are. Especially because some of those listings still had the name of the painting in front of the keywords and my listings were edited according to this article to have less relevant words at the end or just in the description. I even renewed a few listings just to see if that would help their relevancy and it didn't. Long story short I would love to see a more in depth article about how to make our listings relevant, not that I don't appreciate this article here but as you can see I am still have trouble working it all out.

I think the change is great however there are a lot of stores (a lot from china/japan but a bunch here in the US too) that load their tags with incorrect tags just to show up in a greater number of searches! I was looking for cabochons the other day and you'd be surprised how many "beads" showed up in the results not to mention stuff that isn't even in the same category. I wish there was a way to prevent this besides reporting an item. Most shops that I've found doing this have hundreds of listings and each has fraudulent tagging.

My sales went down 75% with change. I do not agree with diversity. I think Etsy should consider long time sellers in some way and not just throw everyone in the same pot because they picked out the same search phrase or word. I am old and this is just too much with no notice except blogs and forums and a single notice at top of your account. We should have been sent an email. You can send us a bill why not a notice of change? Grumpy old me and my opinion. Some of us actually work at Etsy as our sole income and don't have time to read everything and then change all our listings just to get noticed again. I was renewing regularly and giving Etsy $.20 each time. I made money and so did they. What now? No sales plus no reason to renew adds up to zero income for us both.

When are you going to fix this mess. I have stopped renewing items because the pages stay the same for days. I've changed many of my titles and tags and it has not helped. As someone else mentioned in a blog on relevancy there does seem to be a "dirty little secret" on how Etsy is now running the show. You are not letting us in on how it really works. You said you are giving more attention to the beginning words of the titles. This just isn't so. I wish you would come clean and really explain what you are up to.

I don't get this at all. Your explanations fall far short of being understandable, and is mostly jibberish. It sounds like etsy will put whoever they want wherever they want. You guys have something good here, and you are screwing it up by trying to act like you have to be 'all new' and keep making changes just to be trendy. People are 'saying' they get this relevancy stuff, but you'll hear differently very shortly when they figure out they don't. This is messing up SEO it isn't helping it.

I have a lavender necklace up on the page for "Sea Glass Necklace" search under relevancy. It's been there for days. I've tried replacing it with another necklace with almost the same tags and title but the lavender one won't budge and the new one won't show up on that page. Short of bribing a neighbor to purchase it, or maybe deactivating it does anyone know how I can replace it on that page with a necklace that might be more saleable? I'm guessing customers are getting tired of looking at the same items.

This blog says that "titles are now given more weight in our search results". I sell stained glass panels. But some people don't refer to them as "panels". They may call them "windows" or "suncatchers" or "ornaments". If the title is now given MORE weight than the tags (in the search criteria), how am I supposed to know what title to use? How am I supposed to know what term people are searching on most, and therefore, what to use in the title? If title and tags were given the SAME weight, then it wouldn't matter if I called it "panel" or "window" in the title, as long as the other word was used as a tag. THAT'S THE WAY IT USED TO WORK, SO WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU CHANGE IT?

Personally I don't like the new automatic relevancy search. I much preferred the recency search and it was much better for sales. It doesn't seem fair to us little guys who just add a few items here and there. Forget it, you'll never get a handle on it. It's impossible. I just added 2 new necklaces this afternoon thinking they might show up on the first page of the relevancy search. Instead I found one on page 2 and the very last one I added on page 3, and an old necklace of mine was listed before either of the new ones. (Once again all similar titles and tags.) There seems to be no pattern or reason to what shows up on any given page. ( I think thier dogs Milo and Dottie must have a paw in this mess.) No that's not fair to the dogs, they're smarter than that. You Etsy people are too young to remember, but about the time you were all being born, a little start up company called Coca Cola decided it would be a good idea to change the formula of their best selling product "Coke". The public went crazy, stopped buying the product, and demanded they go back to the original recipe. Well, to make a long story short, Coca Cola came to their senses and did just that, they admitted their mistake and returned to make the drink that the world had grown to know and love and the drink that had made them world famous. It all had a happy ending and the Coca Cola company is still thriving today. Perhaps this might be some food for thought to the Etsy owners. Let's all hope this sorted mess also has a happy conclusion and Etsy comes to their senses and admits their mistake. This multi million dollar company made a quick rise to success and it can make a quick fall if they continue with the current changes to their search methods.

This is far from an improvement. Thank you for the tips, but it seems to me that with so many imaginative sellers, this is just a contest of luck - not relevancy. My sales and even views have come to a stand still. I used to relist items to get 5-10 views in the first hour. Now *insert cricket chirp here*. You'd think that etsy would want those lovely relisting fees that actually did a good job of bringing me views and sales. No need to only showcase the top few who fit the screen because they were first to have the magic catchphrase a buyer plugs in. This community is too large for that. :(

What do I use if primarily the first two words are relevant? Every single item has to say "Glass Float"? Or "Fishing Float"? (Boring).I used to title each one with a descriptive word or two that sparked the imagination - then I built that item's 'story' around that one or two initial descriptive, creative words. Now it's BORING. Each listing must say: 'Glass Float'. Glass Float. Glass Float...you get the picture. Worse than boring! No fun at all. Now there's no theme, no clue, no hint of the item's 'story' which I tell in the description. ***Moving on, thank god I managed to find one of my items on page 1 of the search with a plethora of other items including white milk glass vases, metal glass stand holders, items that had nothing to do with 'Vintage Glass Fishing Floats'? Which btw are also often entitled Japanese Collectibles. Where does that fit into the first 2 'relevant' words?*** I'm sure search engine Technology has its own bubble of 'creativity' and unfortunately has to standardize things to work. Yes, they have brought more "variety" into the search, but it's almost a crap shoot - a randomized sort of thing - and I don't feel my shop has the kind of 'store front' presence it used to have. I've had less visitors since the change over to relevancy. I have to constantly renew to have a 'secondary' hope of being found. Guess I better increase my budget for renewals. I'll admit, I'm having a good 'gripe' here! Some of us are old and don't like change. This 'relevancy' thing sure took the fun and creativity out of it for me. Not to mention that most of the Treasuries my floats have been featured in included my items because my fantasy themes and titles, with stories, matched THEIR Treasury theme. Now they won't search for a float that looks like a 'Blue Diamond' to include in their Treasury called 'Blue Diamond' - Because they'll NEVER EVEN find my 'Blue Diamond' float - only 'Glass Float' Glass Float Glass Float ...over and over...like an old scratched vinyl record! So long Treasury Days! So much for creativity. I have sincerely hoped Etsy doesn't go the way of Ebay.....too much 'specialization', too many rules, too much standardization. When you get too many 'specialists' tweaking away at things, pretty soon they have to keep 'tweaking' to get a pay check, when often things were working just fine. Let's try to allow for flexibility, creativity, being different, having fun, celebrating the freedom to do what we feel works for us - or maybe doesn't work perfectly or maximally, but brings us happiness!? I hope a thoughtful compromise can be found allowing shop owners to 'be themselves'. I vote for freedom and creativity. There has to be a way. I dearly hope the hard working engineers read this entry and think it over. Everyone deserves to have a good 'rant' now and then. This is mine. Thanks for hearing me out. I spose I'll calm down and fall into line....in time? I don't know. Disappointing.

i'm confused because i changed all of my titles to put the most important words in the beginning, but when i search for say "40s dress" titles like this "orange and green brocade 60s does40sdress" (item found here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/55631547/orange-and-green-brocade-60s-does40s?ref=sr_gallery_26&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=40s+dress&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=vintage&ga_facet=vintage ) are on the the very FIRST page of the listings. this makes no sense with what you said relevancy would be. That's a SIXTIES dress with a bad title. it just makes no sense. please change it back to recency or figure this out.

Queasy doesn't begin to describe it, I use a unique interesting name for each of my glass beads at the beginning of my title and now I have to change them all? I'm putting that name at the end but still... I went from selling every day to absolutely nothing for days so something has obviously changed drastically. How sad that we have to lose our individuality to be found in the muck and mire that is my category. I know this is a needed thing and I appreciate that Etsy is constantly trying to make things better and evolve for us. Sometimes change is just really painful.....LOL

Thanks so much for this invaluable information. Searching for specific items can be frustrating and as a buyer, I often stopped looking after page 20..it just got too tedious I gave up. I like the recently listed items within the relevancy search. This gives the shopper more direct products to the items they are seeking, and at the same time the seller is rewarded by having their recently listed items show up in the search up at top as a reward for paying the fees to list or re-list! I am still trying to fix everything up... a litle each day!

I need help on how to name my products. Is there a consultant or video I can see? I missed the one on Aug 1. My shop has just about halted just when I was starting to do really well. BTW, I think listing new items and having them on the first page is lovely, but although the relisting helped me, I always thought it was a bit sleezy. Basically I just need help in changing my titles. The only thing I know now is that most of my products will have to have the same 2 words at the beginning. I wish some to the later words could have more weight.

According to Etsy there are more changes in the air. They say that there is going to be a change coming in a few weeks. We will have a new way to take control of marketing and promoting our items. I sure hope they give us more warning than this last mess and it works better than this mess. Right now I feel like I'm definitely not in control of my own business. My views have been down by about 2000 views the past 2 weeks. That just isn't good for sales. I wonder how many of those misssed views might have turned into sales. Guess I'll never know. So sad.

So, given this information where does "categories" fit into searches? My items are for decoration and decor inside the home, but the best categories that etsy ioffers is Housewares/Home Decor/Ornaments. I don't object to 'Home Decor', but I think 'Ornaments' is very much off the mark. Ornaments are Christmas Tree Decorations. Housewares have more of a connotation of utility items such as brooms, vacuum cleaners and such. I would like something as Household/Interior/Decoration or Decor. In fact, when I fist started listing on etsy someone called me out on the Ornament category and etsy's reply was "that's all we have for this type of item"

I think the theory of this new search tool is great but it seems like there is a disconnect in it's application. I know that I, and many others here, would really appreciate a more in depth explanation of the changes and how to make well informed decisions on titling and tagging our items. I am also concerned about the homogeneity that will be created by people having to start all of their titles with bland item specifics. This is a place where artists, creators, and collects sell special things... as such part of it's charm is the original way that items are titled. Titles that are evocative inspire buyers and other sellers alike. Relevancy is great, but I don't know that overweighting the first few words in the title is a good thing. It would be really great if Admin would chime in and let us know when/where we might get better clarification and answers to some of the concerns others have raised. Thank you for all your efforts.

Thanks for all this info and thanks to everyone that shared their ideas and opinions. It's the personalization that makes me love Etsy sellers and buyers. I was already using short titles because of my personal preference not to overwhelm the buyer who is probably looking at thousands of listings. I shortened or changed some of my titles and tagwords today and tested the search results before and after the changes. 1) My title "Vintage Glass Liquor Decanter with Initial G" did not come up in the first 20 pages, so I stopped looking. After I changed the title to "Vintage Glass Decantor" and made the tagwords more relevant, it came up on page 7. MANY other decanters with lengthy, wordy titles still come up before mine. 2) My title "Vintage Wood Finial" came up on the first page. After tweaking the tagwords it came up as the first item, which was very exciting. This search was more "relevant" than the decanter search, except for the 3rd item that appeared which was titled: "sky blue............repurposed shabby beach cottage coastal vintage wood finials garden home decor TREASURY item." The first tagword was "finial." The 4th item that came up was titled "Repurposed Vintage Wood Finial and Vintage Rhinestone Necklace Tassel." The first tagword was "tassel," the second was "vintage"and the 12th was "wood finial." My first tagword is "wood finial." I was confused by the inconsistencies. If I spend time on shortening my titles and tweaking my tagwords for relevancy, can I be assured my listings will get better "airtime" than titles and tagwords that aren't as relevant? I, personally, think basing it on relevancy is the better way to go because that's how buyers shop. I'd just like to know that the site is consistent. Thanks!

So now if I write "art canvas called unicorns in the mist that sing christmas songs" because that is what the artwork is called, it would barely come up on any listings, and may come up in irrelevant searches.(ie, mist, christmas, sing, songs) This is the worst thing etsy has done to date. This was so helpful. Once I changed my titles to read what they truly are, my views increased dramatically. For instance I put the word bookmark, which is what they are, at the beginning of my titles and this helped, rather than putting a descriptive word first before bookmark. Or, I used 'key chain' first if that's what it was, rather than 'chipboard key chain'. When I finish the titles, I'm going over my tags to make sure that they are relevant. I kept watching my stat views go up and up as I changed the titles.

The info sounded good but putting it to the test is an entirely different thing. I've tweaked, did the search to see how my items come up, it's like maybe one item of mine show on he front page, then another on page 3. I guess I don't understand the rellevancy, all of my titles begin the same but are different, I would think they would be grouped together or even grouped closer together, I use the same tag words as the front page items, I list often even my most recent items end up on 4th or 5th page. So I am still unclear as to how the search works, the rellevancy, and getting my items viewed.

I think I may have some helpful advice for those who are having issues. I've read the blog post on this topic a million times and really wasn't "quite getting it" myself. Finally, I went through everyone's comments in this thread and looked at the listings in depth for those that have commented positively and those that have commented negatively and see there are two different basic patterns for listings for each. This has turned on the "aha" lighbulb and has helped me begin to find my way, but I continue to learn and adjust day by day. I encourage others still struggling to do the same.:)

I have been around for many of the changes over the years and not sure how this is a benefit to me or my bottom line. Very sad about this!

Seriously, to me, this means "we ran an intensive study that showed that more money is generated even at the expense of an intutive user experience." Okay, before you kill me for being rude, it just seems to me it's exactly sort of obsessive "command and control," "let's squeeze out every penny with marketing studies" approach that's at the heart of a lot of misery nowadays, and probably the exact sort of thing the Occupy Wall Street people are complaining about. I know you're "looking out" for vendors as well, but honestly, when it becomes this obsessive, it creates irritation among your users because it feels like we're being FORCED into something because YOU think it's a good thing.

Dear Natalie, Thanks for your advice. I love reading the responses here. I think that business's such as Etsy are a lot like government and they tend to rule the shop owners as a sort of government because they are supposedly looking out for the best interest of the shop owners. However the ultimate decision of what happens in each shop is up to the owner's of the shops and their responsibility to tend to it appropriately and within the rules and guidelines of Etsy. I am making many new friends in Etsy and am getting many revues from everyone here. I hope that everyone has a great day and Please visit , browse and favor anything in my shop. I will do prepaid custom orders upon your request.

i couldn't be more disappointed in the new search! My sales are down at least 75% since this change. I'm being FORCED to adjust about 250 listings which costs me a ton of time, and i'm still not even seeing results. I'm incredibly disappointed with ETSY for this change and wish they would go back to the 'most recent' default and let buyers choose 'best match' in the drop down menu if that is what they want.

    cardhugs says:

At first using the tags seemed like a great idea. But Some things I recently put on , I never found on the first page, and that's where people usually start buying. They are tired of looking by the time they see my item on the 5th page, if they see it at all. I have a freind who has sold for years on both ebay and etsy, and while she does quite a lot of business in antiques with ebay, she gets little from etsy. Etsy's prices to list items are reasonable, but if I'm not making sales, how much encouragement is it to list more items? Maybe I need to see what else is selling besides the greetingcards, art print, book and snowmanmagnet I have for sale, as I've only done one sale of an Old Truck card set since I've been with etsy almost 4 months.

This seems to be a big mistake. If relevancy is the new default feature i would like to know if the new pay for placement search ads have priority in placement. Also, why have relevancy as the default while still having a clickable newest listed option. It sounds like we all would need to put the actual item in its title. Why do we still need to do tags then? It is too complicated. It is unfair to list an item and wind up on page four immediately. Even though it was a rapidly spinning wheel, the old newest listed format was fair. I'm wondering if those people who double pay for placement (search ads) remain listed over and above a newer regular renewal? It seems like all this talk about proper title wordage becomes meaningless if the search ads are given priority placement anyway.

Beats me. I am so very new like a lot of you. I started out and thought I was doing fine but needed to take this advice and make sure I had things listed correctly. What a mistake that was. I have gone from 1025 views this month and 257 favorite listings with 57 shop listingswhich I thought was o.k. considering but no sales. So I "tweaked the tags". Result I now have NO views and no new favourites. I changed everything. Something that I find odd. I have attached Etsy Australia to my tags plus handmade to name just 2. Still not there, but, there are shops listed under Australia who are not from Australia. Fair enough if it's an Australian product but this is not always the case. I am about to give up.

Hi, I've read quite a bit on how to set up my items, titles and tags specifically. I've found it doesn't work the way it's suppose too. Is there some other magic that someone would like to share. If I have the recency and relevancy I don't want to see in a search some items before me that should be after me. Just look at the search word Cabochon under Handmade, since my title starts with Cabochon and my tags start with cabochon (eventhough the order is suppose to not be taken into account) my items can't be found on any front pages, and a lot of items that are not relevant or have recency are. Does someone know why this is happening.
