Tell us about your previous working situation and how you discovered Etsy.
I loved my job. It was a home away from home for me. I worked as a writer and graphic designer for the small town newspaper where I live. However, I missed my old job of being a stay at home mom, which was something our whole family wanted. When my blog began to rapidly take off, and I opened up my shop, I saw the potential right away. Four months later, I decided to quit my job. I learned that someone from the paper would be laid off due to the economy. Luckily it was a win-win situation — I got to follow my dreams and no one had to lose their job.
Were your children excited to hear you would be returning home full time?
My girls were really excited that I’d be here to welcome them home from a long day at school. Although at their ages (11 and 17), they don’t need me to physically do a lot for them, it’s very comforting for them to know that I was literally there whenever they needed me.
How did you originally get into the business of making things?
I started creating things because I wanted a beautiful home, but didn’t have much money. When I wanted to learn a new skill, I would find someone who could teach me. In April 2009, I started a blog to share my projects and several of my readers started to leave comments or send me emails saying, “You should open an Etsy shop.” I finally opened my shop in October and began selling the items I had created for my own home to others.
What’s your best marketing tip?
In the beginning I advertised on several blogs, until I felt like I had my customer base to one that I could comfortably handle. I still believe in blog marketing, because it fits my audience so well. I do advertise on a few, but feel like I get the best results when I just blog about everyday life and not try to push my products on my readers constantly. Having good non-promotional content on my blog is actually more effective than writing about my shop. It draws more readers, which in turn see my widget on my sidebar and follow through to my shop.
What’s been your most popular line to date and any memorable custom requests?
My starfish creations, bluebird items and anything with French script on it all sell very well. Once I had an order for French Script Curtains that were very large, and had a couple’s wedding vows translated and painted onto the curtains. They were for their bedroom — which I thought was the sweetest thing ever!
Have you made any business mistakes you regret?
I tend to buy supplies because they’re on clearance (that red sticker gets me every time) and then don’t find a use for them. My new year’s resolution is to think more carefully about my purchases.
In your experience, why do you think the Shabby Chic style is so popular?
Time worn elegance can lend a beautiful touch to almost any home, from a modern loft to a country farmhouse. Soft linens, pretty dishes, and chippy painted furniture can add a sense of history and charm to a home with a few subtle touches. Shabby chic pieces are like soul food to the decorating soul.
What is the biggest challenge you face during your daily schedule?
I really need to set better working hours. I work many more hours that I really should. Luckily my girls can sit and do homework while I’m painting or sewing, but I need to find a quitting time earlier in the day. Additionally, I’m responsible for every little thing. Purchasing, marketing, production, packaging, shipping — the list goes on and on.
What do you enjoy most about not having a day job? Is there anything you miss?
I love that I can schedule my work around my life, and not the other way around. I also get to work with my very best friend, as she helps me with packing orders and post office runs. I do miss the fact that when I left the office, then the work day was over. I worked a lot fewer hours when I had a day job.
What advice would you give someone considering a similar path?
Create lines and items that you truly love, because it definitely shows.
What goals do you have in store for the future of The Shabby Chic Cottage?
I hope to start a furniture line with Mr. SCC soon. We have sold a few pieces locally and have made a lot of our own furniture. Maybe one day Mr. SCC can quit his day job, too!
Have any favorite Etsy shops we should know about?
I love so many shops! SouthRoseWindow and SadieOlive are full of vintage goodness; TheCottageMarket, PracticalFunThings and SimpleJoysPaperie are such creative shops; AirportLoveStory and JKPhotography are great eye candy — my list could go on forever!

I am so blessed with such great family and friends! I’m so honored to be surrounded by such great artisans here on Etsy. My life has changed so much in the last year it’s been an amazing journey. Thanks to everyone at Etsy for all your hard work!
