Thinking of Japan

Update: We at Etsy are pleased to be able to contribute approximately $6,000 to the International Rescue Committee from employee contributions and a company match. According to the IRC site the money will be distributed to three groups and used to: 1) fly in fuel, blankets, food and emergency items, 2) focus on relief for people with disabilities and the elderly, and 3) preparing hot meals at evacuation centers and distributing infant supplies.   We would also like to say thank you again to all the members of the Etsy community who are offering aid and assistance is many creative ways.

Orignal Post: We have all been struck by the devastation of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that affected Japan on March 11, 2011. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been, and continues to be, affected by the impact of these twin events.

The situation on the ground is still in flux and many people have been asking how they can help. This Forum announcement has some great suggestions and highlights two teams, Artist Aid and Etsians for Disaster Relief, that have organized to lend support. The Etsy Japan team also has several announcements on ways to help. For example, if you’re a seller donating proceeds of your sales to earthquake relief, tag the items “artistaid” or “joyforjapan.”

Here at Etsy, many employees have indicated a desire to help. Etsy will match employee donations with a company donation to the International Rescue Committee to support their Japanese relief efforts. Additionally, The Huffington Post has compiled a list of other well-known organizations that are assisting people on the ground in Japan.

On behalf of all the members of the Etsy community, thank you for your support of the Japanese people during this traumatic and difficult time.

The devastation in Japan is beyond comprehension. To lose your own home & belongings is bad enough, but to look over your neighbourhood & see nothing recognisable must be numbing. I already regularly donate to IFAW & Doctors Without Borders, but a catastrophe of this magnitude needs something more. It's great to see the Etsy community rallying round to do what we can... if every Etsy member donated just $5 think what a difference we could make!
