It’s always exciting to be featured on Etsy’s homepage. That golden hour can bring many shop and item hearts, as well as sales. However, “front page” features can be few and far between. But don’t fret! There are many more ways you can be discovered, including Pounce, the Taste Test, the Etsy homepage’s “You Might Like” feature, and Treasuries. Not to mention, your newly listed and renewed items may be found through the sidebar of the Activity Feed of Etsians who have hearted your shop.
Today we’ll look at a simple Google Analytics trick that can help you find which items are being found through various “featured” sections of Etsy.
(If you don’t have Google Analytics installed, start here.)
Step One: Pull up your Top Content report
Within Google Analytics, navigate to Content > Top Content

Step Two: Find the Filter Page field
Simply scroll to the end of your report to find the Filter Page field. Leave the condition as “Containing,” as we want to find URL strings that include reference parameters (which is a fancy word for the characters that appear after your product URL, which indicate where the visitor navigated from).

Step Three: Try a filter
Let’s begin with something we’re all curious about: which of our items are showing up in the Taste Test!
Enter the filter hp_tt_yt in the Filter Page field and hit Go.

Once you get your report, pay attention not only to the items that have been appearing, but other metrics like percentage of page views that come from the Taste Test (expect this to grow over time), and whether Taste Test referrals spend more time on the page, have a higher/lower bounce rate or higher/lower exit rate than the rest of your visits. You may consider optimizing high bounce/exit rate listings with calls to action to explore more in your shop (like “check out matching items [Your Etsy Item URL] or more from this category [Your Etsy Category URL]).
Stats are more reliable as you collect more data, so try adjusting your focal date range to get more data (and better insight) if you’re only receiving a handful of referrals from a given source.
Cool, eh?
There are many filters you could try. Here’s a cheat sheet for your reference:
- Taste Test: hp_tt_yt (or Home Page, Taste Test, Your Taste; This covers both intial Taste Test and returning visitors’ personalized home pages.) It’s important to include the entire string, as simply “tt” will bring up your URLs that include a double-t in them, (e.g. “mittens”).
- Front Page Treasury: fp_treasury
- Treasury (any): ref=tre
- You Might Like: src=fvitm (for people who’ve favorited items of yours) and src=prvshp (customers who have previously shopped from you)
- Recently Listed: fp_recent
- Pounce: ref=pounce
- Activity Feed: af_new_item
- The Etsy Blog: ref=storque
Happy data mining!

I went and checked my stats on all of the filters offered. Some of the results were pretty depressing, quite honestly. It confirms to me that I am not showing up in the 'items you might like' at all. I literally have 0 views from that. Apparently I kind of show at times in the taste test, and with that only my old listings show up. It makes me wonder how many of us actually do show up in the taste test and the items you might like. I know with my taste test and items you might like, it's the same people repetitively. Nothing wrong with the shops. But nothing to my interest, and definitely not pulled from my favorites or even based off of my favorites. So who actually does show up in the taste test? Who actually does show up in the items you might like? I think that these new filters you have provided are probably going to show that not many of us really show up much of anywhere.

Thank you -- this is a very helpful way to make sense of some of the power of Google Analytics! I can spend hours slicing and dicing through GA data just for the trivia value. For instance, I recently discovered that Wyoming is the only state not to have visited my shop in the last month. I put a challenge out to the people of Wyoming via my Facebook page to hop to it. Hopefully they will take action and get their state off my wall of shame! ;-)

NYhop says:
Great information, thank-you. I'd like to make a comment about Etsy's taste test - I love the idea, but a person's taste in clothing for instance may vary hugely from home decor and art to jewelry and accessories. The taste test scrambles all items together and it's hard to get an accurate measure of a person's tastes with such a wide variety. I love the idea of the' taste test', I just think it would work better separated into categories...

Great info! I do agree with NYhop though regarding the Taste test. Also curators should be mindful that I've seen TONS of shops that pop up in taste test and in curated treasuries that include mass produced items from a certain geographic area (most of us are familiar with this). I encourage people to check out the shop and use judgement when choosing to feature a shop/item. Don't chose just because of the pretty photo or because they show up in a search! ;)

Very useful info, thanks! It has confirmed what I feared - that my avid favouriting/circling/treasury curating, while fun, is actually not very effective for getting site views. Fantastic info! It's so nice to be able to pinpoint where my traffic is coming from. And it's very disturbing to see how little of it comes from the Taste Test. definitely an eye opener-- the taste test must be working well for some-- but definitely has its limitations.. google analytics has made it clear to me that taste test has minimal value for me as a shop... and while i think the taste test is a novel idea, and definitely fun-- it tends to be a distraction on the fp-- there's wayyyyy too much going on there now and it's confusing... i can never tell where the taste test ends and the fp feature begins which then bleeds directly into the " you might like "--- it's a lot like my run on sentences! i know admin worked hard on this feature-- but i think it needs to find a better location-- how about large bold text in some hot color prompting " take the taste test" and then arrive at the test via a link... ? thanks for the analytics info and tutorial -- great coverage!

DawnCorrespondence says:
Thanks so much for the super helpful tutorial on how to look up these filters! In reading through the comments, I notice many others already pinpointed what I came here to say, so I will reiterate it. The Taste Test results on my Google Analytics page were extremely depressing. I am basically invisible when it comes to the Taste Test. That being said, I DO like the idea of the Taste Test, but feel it should be in a different location. Treasury curators spend a lot of their precious time creating treasuries and to have those few selected to be on the FP pushed down where they are barely noticeable is disheartening. I'd love to view the Taste Test on my own terms rather than having it be the first thing I see when logging in! Part of the appeal of Etsy is the beautifully MEMBER CURATED front pages!
GlazedOver says:
Wow, kathiroussel said it beautifully and she's spot on. I scanned these comments for those from shops I already recognize and to a man (or shop), they're all in agreement that the Taste Test is of negligible value for the health of their shop. Having taken it numerous times myself, I find it is of negligible value both for reflecting my taste and for enticing me to shop as well. Clearly the Taste Test should ideally be beneficial, at least for the shops that appear there. It would be fascinating to see the analytics AND direct sales results of that. Either removing it from the FP or else making it optional would be better, I think. Great article, thanks for the Google Analytics cheat sheet, and sincere, sincere thanks for everything that the cracker-jack admin group always does to keep the etsy machine humming. Thanks for letting us be a part of the discussion.

@blessthatdress says: I want to ask about bronto, is an email aplication, but I have no idea why does it shows up in my referral sites/ traffic sources on google analytics?? -- Bronto is the email service that Etsy uses for Finds, Fashion, Dudes etc. emails. If a visitor to Etsy clicked through one of the emails it will show up as the referring source. This does NOT mean the visitor came directly from the email to your shop, rather that the visitor arrived to Etsy.com from the email.

I appreciate this article. and i especially like the list of cheats. admittedly, i am still learning my way around google analytics, so this helped bunches. THANK YOU! i would like to echo everything kathi roussel said above. i enjoy the taste test. i also like the "you might like" feature. but both together with the treasury collection? it's sensory overload. in this case less is truly more. also? the taste test doesn't appear to be directing much traffic to my shop.

I'm glad to see articles like this that help us get a better insight of where our traffic comes from. Here's my results from October 1st 2009 to May 17th 2011 Keep in mind these are only how people find me from Etsy. Taste Test= 0 Front page treasury= 0 Treasuries= 19 pages viewed 53 times: 3:29mins, bounce rate 81.40% Favorited Me= 0 Recently Listed= 41 pages viewed 76 times: 22 seconds, bounce rate 58.82% Activity Feed= 1 The Etsy Blog= 0 I've had over 4,000 views in that time period total. Only 9 sales. And it's sad that the above is all I get from within Etsy. I know my product field is very saturated, but still... I've started on this site in October of 2009. I find that most of my views come from promoting I do off of Etsy- twitter, Deviant Art, etc. I'm trying to get a pattern down on how much time to spend on promoting, creating, researching, networking, etc. While still having a night-job. I have a limited income so I don't use renewing as a form of advertising. I hope to expand into other products, and open other shops this next year. You can keep up to date on this at my blog- http://lizswares.blogspot.com/ So I'll be very happy when Etsy makes it possible to run multiple shops from one account!

Thanks for the filters. I had worked out a few myself but it's good to have it from the source. Like many of the people commenting here this info has helped me confirm that virtually none of my traffic is coming via Etsy. The bounce rate for views of my items from Treasury lists is significanly higher than my shop average so I presume that means the "clicks" are coming from people trying to promote their own Treasuries and Teams by inflating the numbers. If Etsy is interested in assisting all sellers it should invest in a decent search engine and fix up the categories instead of promoting all the (as someone else said) "favouriting/circling/treasury curating" which is fun but a waste of time when it comes to sales.

I'm like a lot of others who are commenting on here. I am not showing up on anything. Until recently I renewed often but then after I got the bill I realized this isn't helping me at all. April had no sales whatsoever. Because of this I have also opened up a shop on Artfire hoping to see if maybe having two shops in two different forums might help. I know this is supposed to be helpful information but at the same time it really isn't. You told us how to find out if we show up but what do we do if we don't? I pay more money out then I'm making and if something doesn't change I will be closing down.

That's a really helpful tool, but pretty depressing. It confirms that none of Etsy's features are working for me at all! Only refreshed items are getting any traction. I've ploughed a lot of time and effort into circles, in the hopes of showing up more in the "You might like", or "New items from your faves"... but nope. And since only a handful of sellers ever get on the FP or Taste Test, most of us will get 0 for that. It's probably not the look you were going for when you posted this piece!

Thanks for this blog post.Nice to see people started to use taste test and you might like sections to find the items in the style they prefer.I hope these results reach to FP treasuries' level one day. Btw , I don't know if it is mentioned here before but the right filter for '' you might like'' section had been '' src=favitm '' An Etsy member told this to me and I think you may fix this error in the post.
