Halloween became my favorite holiday somewhere between the moonlit hayrides of my childhood and the crisp, star-sprinkled October nights that I love here in Tennessee. I look forward to this month all year long — the days are wild and windy, and the nights heavy with mystery and magic.
We throw a Halloween party almost every year, usually with a good dose of old-fashioned spooky glamour: vampires and fake blood worthy of the silver screen. But this year I’m thinking I’ll go brighter, lighter, and more flowery with a Mexican Dia de los Muertos celebration.

[1. Rose floral hair piece by ColasArt; 2.Original paper cutting by SheMakeR; 3. Sugar skull ring by sweetie2sweetie;
Think Frida Kahlo, papercut banners, natural wood accents, colorful embroidery, and, of course, lots of sugar skulls. I’ll wear a crown of roses and we’ll all sip cinnamon spiced hot chocolate and mulled wine to celebrate the souls that have gone before us.

[1.Yellow rose hair pins by rosesandlemons; 2.Vintage porcelain rose earrings by roomofyourown;
The prettiest Dia de los Muertos costumes can be put together easily with a few special details. A flowing, embroidered Mexican dress (like this one) paired with some pretty flower hair pieces and dainty skull jewelry is all that’s needed. Skeleton face paint optional, but very nice.

1. Sugar skull garland by TheDollCityRocker; 2. Handmade paper wreath by greentrikepress; 3. Striped paper straws from DimeStoreBuddy; 4. Printable invitations by dollfacedesign.
An antique cream and black color palate for decor provides a perfect backdrop for all those colorful costumes. This printable invitation is made for weddings, but the text can be customized by the seller for any sort of party. Paper garland and wreaths are festive and fun and can be stored away for use each year. Black and white paper straws for sipping party punch are the perfect finishing touch!

In Los Angeles, DOD is an old traditionally celebrated event! As a hoarder, I'm lessening my DOD home decor in hopes of passing them on to those that appreciated Mexican Folk art in the home.

Halloween and Dia de los Muertos are two celebrations that are culturally & spiritually miles apart & totally unrelated. Strictly speaking, they should not even be celebrated on the same day & any similarities are purely coincidental. While I have nothing against an eclectic approach, please remember that for some of us Halloween is a solemn religious festival that we take very seriously... despite having a little fun.

We threw a Dia De Los Muertos party a few years ago. I went NUTS decorating, and actually learned a lot researching in trying to get many parts of our celebration culturally correct. Now, if you ever get the chance, DO DO DO go to Mexico for the holiday. We were so lucky to go one year to Quintana Roo (Playa Del Carmen) without even realizing it was Dia de los muertos (Nov 1st) and got to see an AMAZING celebration! From highly detailed calaveras to stunning ofrendas it is such a monumental celebration of the circle of life. I can't emphasize enough what an amazing experience it was to partake in. While we Americans may think of the holiday as a bit morbid with all the sugar skulls and whatnot, it's actually quite a reflection and remembrance of those who have passed.

Day of the Dead has always been a Holiday we celebrated as a family. I still create pieces to carry on the tradition and I couldnt be happier than more and more people are finding the tradition something unique and special to also celebrate with those they love and lost. www.HikariDesign.Etsy.com Aya

Thank you Rebekka for bringing Dia de los Muertos to Etsy's blog. In Mesoamerica we celebrate November 1,2. We pay homage in a joyous way to our ancestors: food, flowers, sugar skulls, music, ofrendas, beautiful and unique altars in remembrance of our beloved "muertitos". An important celebration in the circle of life/death...

This is cultural appropriation, and it is not okay. Dia de los muertos is a spiritual holiday, not a day where kids putz around in costumes for candy. It's extremely disrespectful to equate this with the secular American version of Halloween. I highly suggest people read this blog post: http://nuestrahermana.tumblr.com/post/11826227843/dia-de-los-muertos-is-not-your-halloween-by

Hope you'll check out my shop- bluetileMosaics- for my lovingly handmade Mosaic Tiled DAY of the DEAD items, as well as other Mosaics for your Home. Thanks! Leslie B.

Love the black and white straws. I don't celebrate Dia de los muertos, but it just seems odd to use it for a Halloween theme when it is a spiritual holiday that is fundamentally opposite to Halloween.

Hello! Thanks for the comments! To the folks who are pointing out that Day of the Dead and Halloween are two different holidays and shouldn't be celebrated in place of each other...I totally agree! I'm sorry if I implied that I was having a Day of the Dead party FOR Halloween...that's not what I said or meant. I have chosen to have a Day of the Dead party to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos INSTEAD of a Halloween party. Sorry for any confusion! <3 Rebekka

Great idea to introduce to our NYC Halloween block party, the streets are blocked to traffic and open to everyone on this magical night, the brownstones decorate their stoops, others create scary houses in their lobbies for the kids to wander through and enjoy and we even have one that puts on an aerial show each year with flying princess acrobatics and their heroes as they're rescued from some villain, Halloween is fun for everyone

AudreyAnne says:
Rebbeka - I understand that you're not trying to have this instead of a halloween party, but it is still appropriation. Day of the Dead is a religious/cultural celebration of a religion/culture you don't seem to be a part of, and are only interested in because you think it looks cool. It's not cool. We don't need more "white people's versions" of things in the world, the original versions are fine just as they are.
