You want more views, and you want more sales. So what’s the number one thing you can do to work towards that? Add more items! Luckily, it is also the most fun — get back to the studio or the estate sale! Here are the whys and hows of stocking your shop.
Why Stocking Your Shop Is Important
Items help you get found. The most common way that someone will find your shop is via one of your items. Customers may find an item in search, or see it featured on Etsy or on a blog. Once they get to an item, they now have access to your shop. The more items you have out there, the more ways you have to be found.
Make more sales to one customer. If you have a well-stocked shop, you’re more likely to sell multiple items to one customer since there is more for them to choose from. Plus, for many types of items, the customer may want to buy multiple items from one seller to save on shipping. In this case, they will find a well-stocked shop that will allow them to do that. Make sure you benefit from this by offering free secondary shipping if it doesn’t cost you extra.
ButterBlossoms’ shop currently has 117 items. Baked goods are expensive to ship, and customers have plenty to choose from if they want to order multiple items:
Fresh merchandise keeps shoppers coming back. If you add new items regularly, fans of your shop will want to check back often to see what’s new.
Tips for Stocking Your Shop
Renew sold items you can make again. You’ve already done all the work of taking the photos and creating the listing. If you can make this item again, relist it when it sells! You can recreate it when someone orders. Successful sellers tend to sell items they can make over and over again.
Thiefandbandit designs a line from which she can sell many versions of her style. She currently has 67 items:
Focus on what’s doing well. If you’re figuring out what to sell, take note of what people seem most interested in — what sells the most, what gets the most hearts and views? What do you enjoy making or curating the most? What items do you make a nice profit on? These can give you good direction on what to sell more of.
Keep it cohesive. Having a cohesive shop is what makes having a well-stocked shop so beneficial. If a shopper comes in on one of your items, and the rest of your shop appeals to that same customer, there are now a variety of items they might buy. If you’ve ever seen something cute in a shop window and then gone in and bought something else, you know how this works. This is a major way sales are made on Etsy. If you have this, great! However, lots of new shops start out selling a wide variety of things. This is fine if you’re getting started and want to see what works, but you’ll probably want to create a cohesive line at some point. If you’re in the “testing the waters” phase, you may not want to go as wild with adding lots of items — after all, you don’t want to do a lot of extra work if you are going to narrow it down later. Pay special attention to what’s popular and make more of that as you stock up.
ForStrangeWomen is a perfumery with a distinct style. She has 116 items as of this post:
Add more styles. Sometimes I see a new seller with, say, one skirt made up in 20 colors. When you’re stocking your shop, focus more on making more styles rather than a lot of extra colors. Why? People are unlikely to buy two of the same skirt, but they might buy a miniskirt and maxi skirt, or a skirt and a dress. Plus, you’ll get found by people who are looking for all of those things. Create a chart of your options and put it into your listings. Yes, it’s great to see something made up in your various color options as separate listings with their own photos, but you can do this as time goes on. Consider photographing and listing separately any custom orders in colors that you wish to carry.
MudPieStudioNC has a great example of a color chart:
Common Questions
How many items? This depends on what you are selling and your personal preference. In general, shops with higher-priced and more labor-intensive items tend to have fewer items. Those selling jewelry with commercial components frequently make a goal of having 100 items in their shop. Look at successful sellers of similar items whose shops are where you want your shop to be and see how stocked their shops are.
Should I wait until I have a lot of items to start selling? No! Start with what you have. You can add items as you go — perhaps create a weekly listing goal for yourself. Having an Etsy shop is fun, and getting views, hearts, and sales while you stock up will keep you motivated!
How many items do you keep stocked in your shop?

I think these tips are so true. It's so nice when something sells to just be able to hit relist and not panic about not having enough items. I've also begun listing coordinating items and that has definitely increased my sales. As a part timer my biggest challenge is having enough time to create a wide variety, but I'm working on it. I think it's better to go slow and have good pictures than it is to just throw listings up though.

true: the more items posted, the more time a buyer can spend choosing in your store. if they can't see it, they can't buy it. the key to not overwhelming is to use the store categories wisely, not cutely. haven't noticed that lots of hearts - or treasuries - add to anything though.

Great article with very helpful tips. Posts like this help me improve everyday. I renew my sold bestseller appliques & painting immediately without wasting any time. It ensures uninterrupted views and likes. Having variety of styles make the customer more curious and visit maximum items. This increases the chances of multiple sales at one time. I offer many colors choices in single applique listing and stock different styled appliques. Also I try to add new items on regular basis. My repeat buyers thus know that I always have something new for them every time they visit! I have learned all this and still implementing the tips Etsy shares in its blogs. Following expert advises has made me fulfill my goal quite early of having 100 sales within one year and I am celebrating it today by offering flat discount storewide! Thanks.

Thank you for all the great reminders and especially the "renew items you can make again" idea. Also, keeping track of renewing items that have expired is important for OOAK thinks like vintage. If it has been a slow day, views-wise, I will renew an item or two, throughout the course of the day. Search words and title relevancy is very important, but I always see my views spike when I add or renew something. Right now, in this shop (I have three on Etsy), I have over 70 items, but most of what I sell are things that were left to me by family members and so far, I still have A LOT to get photographed and listed!

This is helpful and it's so true about refining your line over time and adding items that fit to your overall shop. At the start I tried to load up as many items as I could into my shop but they didn't have a very cohesive feel to them. Now I have fewer items but pretty much every new item I list is carefully thought through as to 1. fit to my current items 2. likelihood of views/ hearts and sales 3. ability to make as a repeat listing if sold. Of course it's all a learning process but it's a good philosophy. Thanks for sharing.

I am working on increasing my range of accessories. I have found it good to offer high and low priced items to give buyers a choice. I started with just scarves but have added brooches, customers love these and are buying the scarves/brooches as a set - this has increased my average sale price. Also because scarves are much easier to sell in the winter my new range of summer scarves are silk and aimed at prom/wedding/ball guests. Keep going Etsy friends - you can do it - keep the faith xx Fairytale13.

Thank you! My shop does well, but I like to read up on all the advise... it's a good reminder when things slow down a bit. I started out with just a few items a couple of years ago, then slowly added more sizes and styles of my pouches... now I have 5 different sizes and many many fabrics for my customers to choose from... so variety is the key :-)

Thanks for the article. I do machine embroidery on towels and just list one color at a time but my 5th picture is of all of the towel colors and I put a note telling the customer that it's available on other colors. If it sells then I list it again but on a different color. They can always convo me and ask for a different color.

Great article - good to learn the 100 item guideline that a lot of jewelers use. I am plugging away at adding to my shop and find that new listings do indeed bring in the traffic. Not to mention, if you tweet/FB, etc., each time you list, you can send a shout out to your audiences there and that often brings in more traffic. Just sold two bracelets yesterday to one woman who saw my FB post on a new listing. Carol

I usually have around 70 items. It's not a magical number or anything, but it's just something that works with the storage area I have available. Not that any kind of inventory number impacts the number of sales. I've always been a slow goer on sales with 70 items or much less.

I've noticed the change in views after getting to the point where I have enough items to make two pages. It's not a lot, but my items are labor-intensive as the author here puts it. So many sellers say you must reach 100 items to get anywhere with your shop, but I agree with this post and think shops with higher-priced and more labor-intensive items don't need to aim for this goal to be successful! Good post btw :)

I create one of a kind works - even the small earrings! but I have managed to amass 102 items in my shop, hoping that the "more is better" concept would go into effect. I haven't seen it yet. I do try to have effective (and appropriate) keywords, but I am still not showing up, apparently, as often as I had hoped. In any case, I assume this means not as many people are searching with the keywords I've used. I don't know how to address this. But the thing I'm really curious about is whether or not rearranging one's shop in order to have similar items appear with each other matters or not. Anyone have any data on this?

Hhhmmm, yes, good tips in general, but ... let's not forget that Etsy is a business. And Etsy gets a cut of every item you POST, whether or not it sells. So of course they are going to say you have to post more in order to sell more. ;) It's only 20 cents, but, hey, 20 cents times all the sellers adds up fast. I have had higher sales when I've had fewer listings, so I am not totally sold on this theory. Just sayin' ...

Always when I'm adding more items to my shop, etsians tend to reduce the number :) Adding more is better, because people like to buy more at once than pay twice for shipping. It's very important because I ship from Europe. Maybe I'm quite unique so I see the effects. But I have no concrete style yet, I think, so I can't imagine how could I be cohesive. For me fact I'm making jewelry from trash is the most important, not the style.

Sarah (cushionchicago)...you're absolutely right. Listing fees add up far too quickly - as do renewal fees. I have stopped adding new items for the past couple of months as I have close to 200 items and sales of high end hand knit baby hats just don't sell as quickly as the lower-priced items from the hundreds of shops in the same field. I have been renewing more than I'd like to recently in hopes of more sales, but haven't seen much in the way of sales. We're all in it for the money - otherwise, we'd be sitting outside in the sun reading a good book.

This is a great article! I have found that listing new items is the #1 best way to sell more. Re listing items helps, but bringing new things into my shop generates sales.. new customers may find my shop, and those who have purchased multiple times from my shop like to see new products. I currently have almost 400 items in my shop, though I understand many people cannot carry that many items- start small and build up! Everyone starts with an empty shop :) A goal of 100 items is a good place to start.

I notice a huge difference in views when I renew my art prints in large batches. For example, last week I renewed one or two art prints and I noticed very little going on in my 'activity feed' but this morning when I renewed 15+ prints all at once, I noticed tons of people hearting my items and bookmarking my shop.

Thank you so much! I'm still in my first month of posting items on my site, and I'm finding it a challenge to come up with more items to list that still look cohesive in the shop. I've gotten so many ideas from looking at other shops for fun things to make that it's really an effort to resist diving in to new crafts instead of focusing on more varieties of what I'm already doing. Thanks for the reassurance that I'm (hopefully) on the right track!

Thanks for such a great article! I am definitely working towards the 100+ mark for items in my shop. I notice all the TOP sellers for graphic design have at a minimum of 130 items if not more. Slowly but surely finding time between my corporate job, kids, husband, and house work. My goal is to be one of those "quit your day job" posters that is mentioned every week! Thanks again this really motivated me! Back to work I go!

I believe running even a smallest shop on Etsy motivates you to do what you love even when you're not in the right mood... This is the most exciting part about it :)

thanks for all your advice, michelle, i used to have only my designed handmade bags in one shop and vintage accessories in another. later i understood that if i took etsy seriously i should focus on one shop. so i combined all items into one shop and present them in colors to match. this is fun to do - like making a new shop window evey day. it brings many viewers, participation in treasuries and compliments that my shop looks good. i am following your videos and reports. thanks again. you are more than helpful ruthi

This is really good advice. I have a couple of shops on etsy they both have about 100 items but I find there are a couple of designs I sell over and over again but variety is a good way for getting customers in to the shop. I take issue with this! While some of the advice is just fine, the suggestion that simply adding more listings will magically generate sales is absolutely false!! There are countless stores with plenty of beautiful listings that show zero sales. While Etsy makes money on these listings, the seller does not. I think the wording in this article gives false hope and encourages people to spend money on listings on the promise of "instantaneous" success.

I'm pretty comfortable with the number of items I have listed now ( 35 or so) because most of my work is one of a kind, a few things are available as made to order but they still maintain differences from the ones that've previously sold. My ultimate goal is to have and keep about 50 items at all times and bulk that up around holidays and season changes as those seem to be my peek selling times. I do wish I could just relist more of the time...lol.

Prior to the jewelry, I was making aceo's, paintings, altered art and game tile pendants and I have to tell you, it got very mentally exhausting. My necklaces can be time consuming which means listing when I can but I am trying and really look forward to when I can make it to a page 3 !

Russ Potak from RussPotak says:
This works well for most things, but I would like to see a market strategy written similar to this that applies to paintings. Paintings are one of a kind. You sell one, its gone. There are no duplicates. You don's stock paintings like you do merchandise. Thats what makes them one of a kind art pieces. Most artists on Etsy, have enough work to fill a museum, and they are not timid about posting them in their shops. Nevertheless, I have yet to talk to or hear another artist speak of any successful selling practices, if indeed, there are any. About the only thing I ever hear are the same things everyone has heard before. Take good pics, write interesting stories, use SEO to your advantage, etc... all which most artists do with a passion. Is there someone out there on the Etsy team who knows someone who can post such an article. I'd love to see it. "Selling tips on how to make more sales for Artists", and I don't mean learn to how to paint Elvis on black velvet with glitter sparkles. This is a quality post with helpful advise for crafters and merchandise. If only it would work for artists.

I started my shop thinking I would combine my 2 interests - vintage stuff and my artwork - in my other life I am a science and art teacher so I have lots of free time in the summers. I have NO problem listing the vintage stuff because I am ALWAYS shopping but I have no time for finishing artwork (I paint very crazy wild furniture pieces which I usually keep or give away...) never mind listing it and shipping it!!! I'm inspired by people with so much commitment to their art and sales!

Currently we have 160 items in our shop. We do like to stay above 100 because it does help getting found on Etsy. According to our shop stats, our number one source of traffic is from Etsy searches. Since we make many different kinds of jewelry, and put them into sets, we have a great variety in our shop for women, girls and children. We are diversified, yet cohesive in the world of jewelry.

I had a rather lengthy post typed here and when I clicked "Add Your Comment," I received a message that I needed to be logged in to comment. And of course the ever-lovely Etsy system ATE MY COMMENT. Ummm ... Hello? My avatar is showing to the left side here so I assumed I *was* logged in! And, believe it or not, when I scroll up to the top, it says "Hi Tana!" So if that's not being logged in, I'm not sure what is?!

I think this article touched on a really good point about "Renew sold items you can make again" . No one hear wants to do assembly work (we're all artist here) , but I try to make at least 3 to 5 items per design. I did all the work of designing, photographing, and then describing each item. That takes time, I would like to get paid for. It's not worth all the effort I just make one item.
