Okay, so junior high is a hard place for most people. You’re surrounded by your peers as your body starts doing strange things, and all you want to do is fade into your surroundings so that no one sees your new acne. My main concern was keeping boys from noticing that I somehow managed to be the only flat-chested girl in the 7th grade. But that was a pretty tall order when something even bigger than my rival’s newfound popularity rolled into my life: the 1995 comedy classic, Clueless.
Until then, I knew nothing about the world of patent leather miniskirts and miniature backpacks, but from the moment I heard my new hero utter the famous words “as if,” my wardrobe (and my life) changed forever. From that day on (well, technically until 9th grade), I refused to wear anything but Mary Janes and cropped tops. (Luckily, I was blessed with an open-minded and fashion-forward mother.)
Since then, I’ve patiently awaited the day when the ’90s would return and I could wear my miniature backpacks again. That day has come. This week, I made it my mission to seek out and reinvent Clueless style.
Daytime Cher: “WHERE’S MY WHITE COLLARLESS SHIRT FROM FRED SEGAL?!”
[1. Vintage mini backpack from 20twentyvintage 2. Vintage beret from Aniandrose 3. Cotton candy collar blouse by Elcaldero 4. Ombre tights by BZRshop 5. Feather pen by Annemusingdesigns 6. Bib necklace by LauraBuscony 7. Vintage white Mary Jane shoes from Weararetheynow]
Cher was the preppiest of her crew, wearing a white collared shirt, mini-backpack, and a pair of Mary Janes.
Date Cher: “Looks like we’re gonna have to make a cameo at the Val party.”
[1. Sheer button-up from GaudyGod 2. Vintage sunglasses from Lelove 3. Leather cutout wedges from Salvagelife 4. Red bodycon dress from Gwizvintage 5. Peter Pan collar necklace by AmprisLoves 6. Pink geometric earrings by ReintroducedShop 7. Canvas and leather bag by StellaandLori 8. Bracelet ring chain connector by Anatego]
Whether Cher was going out on a date or to the nearest Valley party with her BFF’s, she always kept it simple with a short body-con dress and a sheer top.
Tai: “Ugh. Skateboards. That’s like so five years ago.”
[1. Shoulderless tunic by HelloDearieVintage 2. Yin Yang hologram ring from MiracleEye 3. Ombré denim shorts by Rerunvintage 4. Landscape digital print shirt by StAnderswo 5. Vintage Doc Martens from Santokivintage 6. Leather and denim bag by Thingslikediamonds 7. Circle sunglasses from LeLove 8. '90s clear boots from FeelingVagueVintage]
When Tai arrived at her new school in Beverly Hills, she donned the grunge trends of the ’90s — flannel tops and lots of denim. I think she had great style despite Cher’s claim that Tai was “clueless.”
Dee: “Been shopping with Dr. Suess?”
[1. Purple faux fur jacket from Redleatheryellow 2. Scallop edge necklace by TinyArmour 3. Peak brass ring by YoungFrankk 4. Leopard faux fur hat by Frecklescalifornia 5. Handmade crop top by Sunclassixx 6. Flat bangle bag by MsWood 7. Vintage mini skirt from SHOPAT851 8. Aqua Aura ring by AstralEYE]
When it came to style, Dee was definitely the boldest of her friends. I remember her for her wild prints, bright colors, cropped tops and over-the-top hats.
Whatever – I’m outie!

Clueless was one of the last great teenage movies - I went into the theatre thinking it was going to be a fun fluffy movie to spend an afternoon with, it has turned out to be a classic go-to in my 'couch day' DVD collection alongside Encino Man and Don't tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, which by the way is also a rad 90s fashion movie. I have to say though, are we going to be forgiving and assume all these 'vintage' 90s pieces were all made between 1990 and 1992? Because of course, they wouldn't be vintage otherwise...

I never watched Clueless nor tried to fit in. I just did my own thing. I had my own style ideas and wore it proudly. I always think "fashion" needs to be picked and pulled apart. We should always wear what we feel comfortable wearing, what looks good on us and not give a hoot if it pleases someone or a group of someones. To me there is nothing worse than someone wearing the current trend and feeling insecure while they are wearing it.

And here's the bad news! The costume director made up the so-called 'fashions' of "Clueless" based on- you got it! NOTHING! Kids in 1995 did not dress this way in real life. Clueless was released my senior year in high school. Movies like American Pie were on the horizon, and Clueless showed a younger generation that you could be smart, chic, and even sexy without being crass, vulgar, and in-your-face. Cher's outfits were fabulous! To this day, whenever I watch the movie, I want to invoke that time period again and that style. Even her "baggy pants" speech still applies to today!

I really like this article! I loved clueless, and I also sported the mini back pack, clear sneaker high-heeled shoes, preppy mini skirts, and thigh high stockings. I agree let's bring back the 90s!

This makes me want to relive the million and one times that I have seen this movie. The outfit I wore to the 6th grade dance could not have been possible without Cher. Yup- plaid jumper dress with white knee high stockings and penny loafer heels. yikes!

=) I was just thinking of this movie the other day. I totally remember the mini backpack purses! I had a green one I believe. And plaid mini skirts with thigh high stockings, I loved them! And, sheesh, 17 years ago, that makes me feel rather advaced in age! Seems like we were just rollin' with the homies yesterday

I was working at Contempo Casuals when this movie came out. They had a marketing deal with the movie and so we carried all of the clothes from Cher's wardrobe. From the argyle skirt to the fuzzy sweaters to the mary janes, I wore it all. Accept my mary janes were silver not white, as if!

Oh, I so miss my youth! I remember being OMGSOEXCITED when I found the EXACT SAME brown Esprit fair-isle mini-vest that Cher wore to school...and OMG THE EXASPERATION when my mother wouldn't let me pair it with thigh-high socks and a teeny skirt for my first day of high school. :) Thanks for the flashback!

Bit confused as I was told that anything over 20 years was considered vintage, so if it is 1990 that's great. Bit puzzled by one comment from another Etsyian...anyway this is a nice post, bought back a lot of great memories for me. Thanks.

i saw clueless 7 times in the theater, it was my portal into fashion. from there came the magazines and mall crawls and all that followed. great article, and don't worry i was the flat chested girl next to one of you during silent sustained reading and look at us now. xoxox.

Once again Etsy promotes non-vintage that shouldn't even be allowed on the site by their own TOU.
