Ombré and shibori and ikat, oh my! On Thursday, May 31, the Textile Arts Center visits the Etsy Labs to teach Etsy Hands-On: Natural Dye. RSVP and join us!
Isa Rodrigues from the Textile Arts Center will talk about natural dye and show participants an eco-print technique where silk is wrapped around natural items and dipped into dye baths made from onionskins, flowers and leaves.
We’ll provide the dye and silk handkerchiefs. All you need to bring is 4-6 small sticks, rocks, pieces of bark, or other natural items to use in the dye process and a plastic bag to transport your finished projects. Because of limited space in the dye baths, only the silk handkerchiefs provided will be dyed.
Dyeing for more? The Textile Arts Center offers monthlong and weekend intensive classes in both Brooklyn and Manhattan. These talented people are also in the process of transforming an empty lot near their Brooklyn studio into a unique CSA, Sewing Seeds. Membership provides access to natural dye plants and workshops teaching you to use them. You can read all about it here.
More Details:

Great project! I had a blast making natural dyes in my botany class a few years ago using things like beets, blueberries, and onion skin in combination with different mordants to create color variations. Fascinating process!

We've done a lot of dyeing in our experiences and it's so much fun experimenting with different materials for dyeing. We've had a lot of success with tea-dyeing - the tannins make it strong and colorfast, but since we use organic cotton, the pre-treatment is really important. I'd love to see some more tips, we should try out dyeing other materials!

that sounds really amazing - i wish i could make it! this past autumn, i did a lot of hand-dying with natural materials, and got some good grey wool with blue undertones, and some linen and wool in varying shades from chokecherry juice. hearing about the workshop (even though i can't attend) makes me want to get out the rest of the juice i extracted and preserved via freezing so i can try it on silk ribbon...

Beautiful scarves- for those who are interested in trying these techniques but can't make the workshop, India Flint has a book called Eco Colour, all about natural dyes without chemical mordants (you'll note the photos above are credited as being one of India's workshops). It's a fabulous book, cannot recommend it enough.
