The Seller Education team has collectively been critiquing your Etsy Shops for over 9 years! We’ve watched many of you grow after our critiques and we’ve also seen you successfully critiquing each other on the Forums and in your Etsy Teams. I’ve created this list of the most important questions you should ask when critiquing your own shop (or a friends!). You can also download and print this list! Am I missing an important question? Let me know in the comments below.
Will your Shop Name help promote you?
Does your Public Profile need a little help?
- Is your avatar recognizable and does it reflect your style and personality?
- Have you filled out your location?
- Does your profile tell your story?
Are your Shop Settings working for you?
- Do your Shop Title and Announcement contain good search keywords?
- Does your banner reflect your style? Does it look good with your item photos?
- Have you enabled buyers to follow your Facebook Fan Page and Twitter accounts?
- Are your Shop Policies filled out? Do they instill trust in a buyer?
McKinney Inspirations by thatsaplanonline
Let’s check out what’s in your shop!
- Do you have enough items in your shop? The more items you have the more a buyer has to choose from, and the more likely you’ll be found in a search query.
- Are your item titles easy to read?
- Is there variety in the titles throughout your shop?
- Have you made your titles, tags, and descriptions relevant for search?
- Do you use all spots for tags in each item listing with relevant search terms?
- Do you use style, color, size and texture tags including word phrases as tags that a your buyer would search (eg. steampunk cufflinks)?
- Do your descriptions reflect your unique voice – making it easy for the buyer to connect with you as the artist or collector?
- Do you answer all the questions a buyer might be asking about this item?
- Reevaluate your prices. Do your prices reflect the quality of your work and your time?
- Do you ship internationally? Ask your local Etsy Team for advice if you need it. (Did you know that roughly 1 in 4 sales on Etsy involves a buyer or seller outside of the U.S.?)
- Search for what you sell, and look at your photos in search results. Do your photos make you want to click?
- Are you using all 5 spots for images including at least one close-up and one photo that shows the whole piece?
- Do you have unnecessary graphics, borders or logos on your photos?
- Is your shop cohesive? If not, try to tie it together with your photography style. Cut back on listing items that aren’t selling.
How did you do? Think you’ve mastered all these points? Don’t worry, there are still a few things you can work on that I didn’t cover here (like promoting, branding, product development, etc.). Never stop evolving your shop, that’s what makes running your own creative business fun, not only for you but also for your buyers.

Great list, thanks! I was wondering...how do other people feel about description styles? Dear Danielle, Great article...HUGE QUESTION amongst SO many Sellers... WHEN will Etsy provide MORE than 10 categories? We could easily use 15-20. Many Sellers open secondary shops because they cannot accomodate and separate their offerings and talents within the confines of just 10 categories. The site has exploded over the years and we still are restricted to just 10 categories. I know first hand from many, many Sellers a its a huge requirement and would enable more of your wonderful suggestions to become realities. Please pass this on to the IT people. Its really a critical issue that is worthy of immediate attention and implication. Very simple coding and would delight all Sellers - its often crippling for us and frustrating to Buyers who cannot navigate because of the limitations. Love your column as always -- *hugs* -- Ricky

Great list of things to think about! Shipping costs are the most difficult for me, zones in the US are so varied. Thanks so much for the tips. My son kept asked me why do I still do FREE shipping at my shop since I do have all value stuff? I told him because I just open not long days go. That's why. So I am giving a chance to the early birds.PLEASE read my feedback what sellers and buyers says about me. Thanks sweetie.

Thanks so much about the tips, especially about the Avatar. It is important to change it up, but you get attached to the item sometimes. Case in point my butterfly...which is for sale in my shop. (I gave myself a pat on the back!)

Such an awesome and timely article! It's amazing that it's come today because I was just thinking of throwing out that question to people who follow my blog - please critique the shop. It's part of my "Be Fearless in the Pursuit of Success" project for myself for the next 12 months. ....Will you critique my shop? Please? (smile) ....I'm moving to England in April, so I'm at a bit of a loss on how to do the shipping as almost all my sales are in the U.S. Not only that, but I just got picked up by a store in TX and an upscale salon in CT. Any helpful advice?

Thank you! This sort of information and checklist is incredibly helpful for a seller like me who is just getting started. I know what I like in other people's shops, but it's hard to pin that down in words, and then try to make it a truth in my own shop - I'm definitely still working on it! I think considering it all at once can be a little intimidating, but taken one at a time, these sorts of changes are easy for any of us to make.

Thanks for the rundown- I am going through the checklist and making sure everything is easy to read and easy to navigate. I am still not quite sure about pricing. When I search through the Alchemy postings, it appears that people are looking for low prices rather than quality items. I can't imagine putting together an entire quilt for someone for $75.00! Is the general idea of Etsy to be a low-end "craft fair" vs. a site for quality hand-made goods?

I live in Manitoba, Canada and one of my big peeves is shipping. Post in Canada sucks! Because we have such a huge country without the population, it can cost more to post to Saskatchewan, which is the next province to me going west, than it does going to Vancouver, which is three provinces away! And the reason for this is because its more populated in Vancouver and therefore more post is going there. But then again if you ship to Vancouver it still depends whether you're shipping to the countryside or to the city! When I see people charging $2.50 for post I don't know how they do it. My gift boxes are too big to go regular post and so has to go small packet, which doesn't help with costs. My shipping cost can be anything from $7.50 to $15. Anyone got any tips. I think I just answered my own dilemma, get smaller boxes. Smaller than 2cm in depth? I don't know. Need some suggestions. Thanks.

really interesting post. I think I've got most of that pretty well down, but its always good to go over things again with a critical eye. I do know that I try to take lots of pictures for most of my items, though I find that there are only so many ways to photograph stitchmarkers, and usually only have 2 images of those... I have not found that to be a large downfall thus far.

Brilliant article! I also believe a link in your shop announcement where people can subscribe to your shop RSS feed is advisable. Also a link back to the main section in your shop on each listing description, alternatively you could direct them to your shop sections featuring other items in the same theme. This should help with customers who randomly stumble across a listing through Google, etc. Thanks

Thanks so much for touching on a timely topic for me. I just opened my Etsy shop last month and I was getting a bit discouraged. I love how everyone on Etsy is so willing to share pointers and success stories with fellow Etsyers.

the sections critique was especially helpful for me - I chopped my sections down from eight to just three, bigger books, small (and tiny) books and Drawings - some of my oldsections had only one or two items in them, some had none! my new sections are well populated

Love this check list. One constructive (I hope) comment: I know it's a good idea to use all 5 photos but it really irks me when I click on photos and 3 or 4 of them are nearly identical. Don't waste my time just so you can use up all the available photo spots.
