The art of correctly pricing your products is tantamount to your success as a seller. So why does it have to be such a tough nut to crack? From understanding your costs to using pricing strategies (oh hey, tiered pricing), there’s a lot to learn. We’re here to help!
On Tuesday, May 15, Megan Auman and Tara Gentile shared tips for putting a fair value on the goods you work so hard to find and create. Tara tackled the psychological and strategic end of pricing, while Megan took on how to find your “right” price.
For those who were unable to attend, or who attended, but can’t get enough of the dynamic duo, Megan Auman and Tara Gentile, the recording of the event is available in Etsy’s Online Labs:
Oh, and don’t forget to download and print the free Art of Pricing for Profit workbook, with exercises and game-changing questions by Tara, Megan, and the Etsy Seller Education Team. It’s a great tool to use as you follow along with the presentation and to keep as you price your products in the future.

pricing is so hard and I almost think as a maker you shouldn't be the one deciding prices of your own creations... Artists let their gallery people decide prices and I feel like I should do the same ;) I feel I am constantly pricing too low and when I decide on an increase I feel guilty. I will not be able to attend in person but will certainly try to hear it on Etsy. Thanks!

Thank you for addressing this issue. I see so many things priced at a loss for the seller that the public expects these prices now, just because they do not realize that certain artisans are pricing to lose money, and that in turn forces out those who desire to make a living from their work.

Sounds great, wish I could be there! Your pricing must reflect the value of your work, don't charge less then its worth. If you under bid yourself when pricing, it shows that you don't value your work. This will make people second guess the quality and craftsmanship. Find that medium where you can price it at what its worth, and sell it for that price.

Yes, I agree with some of the comments here. Some sellers price their items so low that I will never be able to compete with those. However, when you are producing a truly handmade item (not something that was knit by a machine!), you cannot charge $10-$15 for a crochet hat. It hurts the rest of us.... Thanks for bringing this issue up! Look forward to seeing it posted online so I can read up on it later. Happy Friday All!

anny seavey from HotFlashAnnys says:
I am interested in learning about your theory of pricing especially in this market. I sell woven jewelry. The cost of overhead is enormous - the kagillion things to take into the pricing. The costs of things like the gas or mailing costs to get product, the kagillion things one must buy for variety to create, the overhead of heat ,light, and then the hours it takes to weave a bracelet. I would like to earn $10.00 per hour and to sell a 7 "bracelet with say 800- 1000 top of the line beads for 40 bucks with almost 2 some times + hours into it is really cutting it close.I charge $60 and they don't sell. I have to compete with girls who are selling for $40 and I wonder how they are making any money? or aren't they considering overhead? I too will be having eye surgery that day so I hope you record it !!!

Aside from your product, price is the leading factor in producing sales. A couple of things we have noticed is one, there are many that under price their products which in turn affects the overall niche market they are in, but I've also seen many over price their products way to high (pride related) which in turns produce little to no sales. Don't get me wrong, we take much pride in what we do, but you have to detach yourself from your product in order to clearly price them out. Should be an interesting lab.

Sioux from UrthGypsyVintage says:
Ususally when I make something, a first sample in particular, and I have just finished laboring and sweating and obsessing over it, I think, "This should be a lot of money." Then after listing and a couple of days go by and no hearts or bites, or views even, I am tempted to mark it down. It's like when you have a baby, you are in the thick of heavy labor and pain but when the baby comes it's a distant memory.

Katie Miller and Garnet Griebel from scarlettgarnet says:
Really looking forward to this workshop! One of our biggest challenges is building in a little bit of product into a wholesale vs. retail price. We have also found it hard to price out products based on labor- there are so many steps that go into one piece, not just the minutes that go into the final assembly. One of our major challenges is pricing based on the fluctuating market, or even just how much in "bulk" we are able to buy supplies at one time. We are discovering that if you want to make this your livelihood, you really need to account for EVERYthing in your final price or you can't make it!

As a LONG time working artist, 35 plus years making a living by the work of my hands, I still find pricing one of the trickiest aspects of the business. Price too high & you eliminate A lot of customers, too low & your work is unappreciated. I just helped ,my daughter, who is doing her first show this sat. to price her work. My main advise was to stay flexible & see how the public responds, thats what I do, but sometimes I raise the price & then it sells- crazy ,right.

Megan and Tara - A M A Z I N G. Thanks so much for this incredible wealth of knowledge and inspiration. From your discussion of our money-guilt ghosts to your wise formulas - my head is spinning in the most excited way. I think as artisans we do struggle so deeply with an entitlement to earning an income based on the value of our work. ... "How dare I make a living doing something that I enjoy?" You've shaken it all up. As a new seller on Etsy riding all the learning curves - please know that this was - for me - the most informative workshop I've seen. I watched, enjoyed (and took notes!) from the first word to the last. Cudos !

This really opened my eyes, and made me think. I feel like I do work in a sweat shop...and I'm the one running it no less. I don't deserve the hand cramps, the aching wrists, and other issues I feel already. I love what I make, I love to crochet, and I want that love to shine through in every item I put forward for my customers. I want them to love it as much as I do as I make it...but that can't happen when I'm feeling guilty about my prices and when I'm worrying about barely making ends meet and rushing to meet the next deadline. I owe it to my customers to slow down, to price properly, and to give them an item they're going to absolutely love for years to come!!! With that said, I'm going to start valuing my talent, and pricing my products to show their value. Thank you for this eye opening experience!!!!

THANK YOU! As an art teacher, as well as a fine artist, I have a difficult time explaining to my students (and my oil-painted-pet portrait-customers) why artworks are worth what they are worth. Sometimes, I don't understand why the common red yarn stretched across and stapled to the gallery wall and floor is considered art worth a million. Additionally, trying to decipher the value of CONCEPTS and INTENTIONS is sometimes beyond middle school students capabilities. I now know that my jewelry is worth much, much, much more! ;)

How much profit do you give the business on each item....to keep my prices down (because I am freaking out at the number) I only give between 25¢ and $1.....is that enough! Please convo me!

I really loved pricing presentation from Megan and Tara. I left feeling totally confident and motivated! I raised all my prices. Now my items are pretty much in the highest price range for those specific items on etsy. SInce I have done that I have not made a single sale. I was not really making sales before that either, but at least I had made a few. I am worried that this will not work, because if all your other competition (who make the exact same thing I do) price lower, then why would anyone buy from me?? I know that I also need to focus on other ways of promoting my items, as well as creating mew items to add to my shop. If anyone has any thoughts or advice I would love for you to convo me. :)

Best video I have seen on Etsy. Very informative! I feel like I learned a lot and have a lot to think about. I had my boyfriend watch with me as he has his music stuff so he's an artist and he got a few things out of this video, too. I just feel like I need to sit down and have a one-on-one with someone as experienced as these two to look at my specific category and give advice that's more geared for that. Jewelry is one thing, knitting is another! Nonetheless though, this video was totally worth the time. Thanks for sharing! :)

I can't thank you enough for this video! Really inspiring and encouraging - and a formula that is really clear and helpful. Thank you Tara and Megan! I'm still building up my portfolio at the moment, but now that I'm pricing correctly I have confidence I will be able to make a living at some point in the near future! I've been recommending this video whenever anyone asks for pricing advice (and sometimes when they haven't asked!).
