Featured Seller: Sartoria

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Not very much!  My revolutionary farmer friend once labeled me as “severely creative.” She meant it in the best of ways.  It doesn’t matter what I get up to: my ideas are constantly informing me to shift things around, arrange pieces a particular way or get up and do something. There are some titles and themes to my forays. Yes, yes, I like tall-bike building and riding, making fermented foods, wild-crafting and being silent in places where there are no human sounds.

What would be the title of your memoir? Why?
The Princess Man. It would be a spinoff of The Paperbag Princess by Robert Munsch; kind of like the sequel, where the dragon and the princess decide to build a cave/castle together and invite all of the orphans to live with them. It’s a chaotic place, but more like a forest and less like the downtown of a city.  The princess has to wear a lot of different “hats,” as well as “the pants,” so to speak, because the dragon (although he is mighty and can fly around the world) is just a dragon and needs to be encouraged away from hoarding and spouting fire.

Where does your inspiration come from?
It can be said that my inspiration comes from everything, except for the things I find boring, offensive or ignorant. Even these things can act as catalysts for doing something as a response, though.

My inspiration comes from the resourcefulness of people who don’t have money to buy everything; trees in the wind; clouds (especially when they have really specific shapes in them); and the folks I know who can commit to holding it down in one geographical location for their lifetimes (and the perspective that offers them).

Who has been most influential in your craft?
A gaggle of Yogis that I lived with in my twenties. They influenced this wandering, non-committal lady to focus on one idea, dedicate time to develop it, and work steadily to make it grow.

How would you describe your creative process?
My creative process is like making a wild ferment. It starts with the process of making the conditions correct. The next moment is some kind of magic thing, not unlike how ideas form or creative impulses arrive. The Invisible Allies, or microscopic “insects,” come and enliven the condition. At this point, the work enters a different stage and it becomes more about making the idea happen and doing the steps to follow the creative idea-notion.  It becomes much more concrete, but still with room for not knowing and playing, and things find their place.

If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsman (dead or alive), who would it be?
Buckminster Fuller, Nikola Tesla, Antoni Gaudi and Sandor Katz. I also fantasize about sitting in on recording sessions and concerts by Sun Ra and John Coltrane (especially after he met Alice).

What handmade possession do you most cherish?
Right now I am in love love love with my socks.  My friend Rosy’s mom made them. She lives in Nova Scotia, in a house with no running water or electricity, by choice. These socks were knit by the woodstove, and they’ve got griffon/reindeer creatures at the top.  I keep darning them as the holes arrive. They are the best ever.

How do you get out of your creative ruts?
If it is a little one, I go outside, get on my bike and take a ride. If it is a big one, I just keep going, even if it feels like I don’t accomplish much in a day.  Then, at some point, I take a break for a bunch of days in a row. I jump out to the countryside and look at the night sky for a bit, and remember (again and again), “Oh yeah! We’re floating in space!” Somehow this puts everything in a very good perspective and I am re-inspired.

Where would you like to be in ten years?
I would like to be in a studio loft that is like a glass crystal hinged on the top beams of a drafty barn (with footings), complete with wood-stovepipe running up from ground level and chickens pecking at the grass outside. I want to be taking rides, from time to time, in my (handmade) hot air balloon.

What a fresh response to getting out of big creative ruts "If it is a big one, I just keep going, even if it feels like I don’t accomplish much in a day." It's so scary to face that feeling of having accomplished nothing, it too shall pass. Thanks.

  • filmshirley

    filmshirley says:

I love your imagination, and your work really is lovely, but I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "being inspired by people who don't have money to buy everything." Perhaps I'm overly sensitive because I'm forced to be creative because I literally have less than $10 in the bank, but I admit I find it a sore spot. You see, I grew up in a home where we were forced to live downstairs by the woodstove for a good 5 months of the year, sleeping together in the living room trying to keep warm, my mother knitting blankets to hang in the windows to trap drafts, being trapped in heavy snows and ice storms every year that would knock out our electricity for days. It was quite difficult and not very romantic at all to live on pancakes and biscuits because my parents couldn't afford anything else. I'm so glad that experiences like ours fuel your inspiration. They certainly fuel mine, out of perpetual fear of having to go back to that life.

Great interview! I also agree that great inspiration comes from the resourcefulness we are forced into when faced with limitations. The other day I went to buy kraft paper to make new patterns, but the store was closed. I needed the patterns for the next day, so I decided to search around the house for paper I could use instead. I saw a pile of grocery paper bags...the lightbulb in my head turned on. I will never buy kraft paper again for patterns as long as I have grocery paper bags :)

I'd have to, with all due respect, agree with the previous comment. While I can admit to being smitten by the notion of cashmere panties, what I can't swallow in any kind of good conscience is the headline. Being inspired to create luxury items that are, frankly somewhat embarrassingly decadent, by people who "don't have money to buy everything" is offensive to me. I think there are a number of marketing angles that might be more honest and tasteful for you to explore.

Thank you previous two commentors, my thoughts exactly, although much more well written than I could've done. The question I am left with Satoria: Are you blessing those inspirational, resourceful people who don't have enough money to buy everything with your fancy pants?

Thank you for your well written article however I must profess to be commenter five in a row who feels put off by your ambiguous statement “My inspiration comes from the resourcefulness of those who don’t have money.” Also I am uncertain as to what your function in designing is, as there’s a very limited number of items in your shop. Do you raise the sheep, spin the wool, construct the garments or???

  • TheGypsyTinker

    TheGypsyTinker says:

May I add something more, as a person who hasn't been able to pay her rent in 3 mos., lives and breathes the worry that she'll be evicted any moment, and just counted quarters to pay for the SH on the one sale I've had from my etsy shop in recent weeks? In other words, as one of the resourceful poor, I'd like to add, that inspiration can come from anyone, anywhere, for a tool or a luxury item. As artists and shopkeepers, we are all in the business of coming up with items that will be desirable to a buying public. Being poor AND resourceful does not make me begrudge a pair of cashmere undies to a person who can afford them, and it does not make me ask an artist, creative enough to produce them, and honest enough to admit that the notion of "necessity is the mother of invention", or that her inspiration PARTLY " comes from the resourcefulness of people who don’t have money to buy everything", not to make luxury items. Think of it this way, in my poverty, I dream of wearing warm expensive undies during winter. It gives me something to strive for, and I have found them here, handmade, and beautifully designed, and ingeniously presented, in such a way that I AM INSPIRED to work harder and be a better artist. Sartoria owns her words, and is being forthright enough to put them in print. I don't care where her inspirations come from, although it's interesting to know what makes another artist tick. I'm just thrilled another human is inspired to make something lovely, or ugly, or useful or simply unique. Being resentful and judgmental isn't creative. It isn't even a critique of the work. It's just negative commentary. So let me finish this diatribe with the one I used above. Congrats on being featured, Sartoria, you give me inspiration in return, and that's what it's all about.

I have a lot of beautiful lingerie, probably more than I should - it's something I love, but I mostly get it at clearance sales. It's interesting that all the critical commentary about the seller's statement about the "people who don't have money" inspiration are either misquoting what she actually said or leaving off a portion of the quote. She says, "My inspiration comes from the resourcefulness of people who don’t have money to buy everything..." That is a world away from saying "poor people inspire me," or even, "My inspiration comes from the resourcefulness of people who don’t have money." To me, it's a way of describing an affinity for a 'make do' aesthetic and folk art DIY tradition, not a way of appropriating poverty for profit.

Then to actually post this nonsense, as if it were legitimately informative is just as crazy as this seller seems to be! @shipwreckdandy I only partially agree. I think Sartoria's word choice was kind of lousy, but Etsy's misquoting of her was even worse. But I will say, the belief that poor people are more "authentic" is nonsense, and Etsy keeps perpetuating that myth. Remember the Hobo Wedding? I'm sure they were sweet people - sweet people with a bad idea. That is a great example of this unintended offense. I don't know if it stems from guilt of having a more comfortable life, false nostalgia for "the simple times of getting back to the land," a lot of overdosing on The Waltons, or what. All I can say is, there's a dark side to living life more simply, beyond some great Pinterest links. Living off the land is great, if the weather co-operates and a drought or flood doesn't kill your garden; or a weasel doesn't eat your baby chickens in the night, or being four years old and watching your dad kill a rabid raccoon with your great-grandfather's gun so it doesn't attack you. I've experienced those realities. Many of us on Etsy live with harsh realities every day. Many of us are artists here, we all have dreams, we're all trying to survive. I'm glad not everyone has to go through truly hard times. But I would like to see a little more sensitivity and support in these interview opportunities. I'd love to see more like Yellowfield7's moving story of surviving the Serbian war and putting herself through college. To me, that's what Etsy's spotlights should be about: inspiring other artists through their stories of making it against all odds. Those stories keep me going when I can't pay my electric bill.

filmshirley--Etsy didn't misquote the seller, the commentors misquoted or abbreviated the actual quote. I think there is a lot ripe for pickin' in the interview, but it's unfair to criticize an incorrect statement. And every reference I saw in the comments to the 'poor people' idea had the quote wrong. The hobo wedding hoopla is definitely what came to mind, but only as I read the comments. There's nothing in the interview that alludes to the appropriation or exploitation of poverty. She said she is inspired by the *resourcefulness* of people who don't have the money to buy everything. This is akin to what Yellowfield7 stated about her own creative process. In that case, she was talking about her own circumstances, but that is somewhat inspiring, is it not? The idea that you can figure out ways to make things using alternative tools and self-devised techniques, because you can't just go out and buy everything? I gather that is exactly the type of thing that this seller refers to. That kind of thing inspires her. Find your own way, craft it from scratch without relying on expensive tools, academic bolsters, etc., like the throngs of craftspeople before you. She's inspired by that kind of ingenuity. Where's the issue? I feel like part of the issue with this interview is that there was seemingly no editorial input on any level. Not everyone is a writer and it takes some skill and guidance to pull off communicating a persona and representing yourself strategically. Plain talk would have obviously worked better, but this seller seems to have the type of shop and personality in which she would like to convey her artistic/eccentric nature. Does anyone help the sellers out before it gets published?

  • ViaVera

    ViaVera says:

I agree that her statement wasn't about poor people. It was about people who don't have the money to buy "everything." Which means that it applies to people who CAN scrape enough to buy $45 undies all the way up to those who have to settle for a 20-meter yacht when they'd rather have a 25-meter . Personally, I believe in using my resourcefulness as a means of creating beautiful things that most people can afford, not as "inspiration" to produce luxury goods. Having to confine oneself to a more limited range of materials and turning something simple into something spectacular without having to spend (or charge) a lot takes much more creativity.

I'm not down on money AT ALL and often overspend on just about every article of clothing but I would NEVER spend $45 on a pair of underpants. I'm sure the seller is a nice person, but her interview just sounds eccentric in my opinion. "The Invisible Allies, or microscopic “insects,”" What in gods name? Is it too difficult to feature a seller who actually sells amazing things that are AFFORDABLE? I feel like I'm asking too much here. This makes me think of the HOBO WEDDING. RIdiculous just like this article. I'm sure this comment will be removed soon. Oh well. AprilMarieMai says:

also, although there are things that shouldn't be printed, some kookiness should not be shared with the community, and the way the blog editorial team goes about editing can be quite offensive; i do NOT think that they should be editing every bit of text of every interview. When coralgate happened and they finally posted a seller 'rebuttal' they heavily edited the 'letters to the editors' they were sent for publishing (after inviting those sellers to write pieces for it), to the point where they truncated what the submitters had to say and took valid and important arguments out of it. That was not okay. Etsy edits what they want to; when they post interviews unedited, it is because they want to. That said, this interview is just out in never land. Some stuff should not be put up for display (the crazy stuff, stuff that makes light of or uses those who have to suffer through extreme poverty, stuff that tries to get readers to not buy specific things from sellers on their own site, stuff that makes fun of their own users), and the blog editors do not seem to get that, even after many major fallouts from bad decisions. They just lock the comments if they don't like where they are going (which means any sort of criticism at all).

Ok..re-read them all, and I have to say one more thing. I can't buy everything I want. So, I skip buying a few things on impulse, like magazines or an extra bottle of paint, so I CAN buy expensive toilet paper. No lie, true story. WHY? Because I love my butt. I love my poor beat up aging body and if wiping it up with something thick and soft when I can't make my bills makes it feel comforted and makes me feel like I still have a right to a wee bit of decadence in my life, then so be it. I know. I'm a rebel. :) What's my point? $45 dollar underwear. If you have the money or you can figure out how to piece it together, I say go for it and I'm so happy that someone, (who isn't a company farming their designs out to China to abusively use underage dormitoried "slaves" to produce it), is making something amazing, so my butt, your butt; our butts can have some! Good grief people, what do you all have against your butts? Why don't you think they deserve soft undies? Cut some corners in your spending and get some. This woman is doing something creative, and it uses her time and her resourcefulness and her money to do so. Why because it's frkn UNDERWEAR do you suddenly see it as trite? If it was a pillow with a bird on it, you'd love it. Kudos to Sartoria. and thank you. I'll be back to shop for leggings and high rise undies and wool garters as soon as I sell a painting, and get some groceries under my cinched up belt. :) Oh and don't let anyone poke a hole in your hot air balloon. rexnezzy says:

@TheGypsyTinker on the subject of Chinese factories. Most economists - even liberal economists - agree that despite the rough (to say the least) working conditions in Chinese factories, the truth is that the standard of living is significantly better in China because of these factories. It's a double-edged sword and the American companies who hire these factories need to be policing working conditions much, much better than they are doing currently, but that does not mean that we should stop buying products from China - "boycotting" will not improve the lives of factory employees and it is not an altruistic thing to do. So if you're going to buy on Etsy, don't do it because you have misgivings about Chinese factories. There are concrete political steps you can take to solve that problem rather than funding the mystical whims of a douchebag like this woman who lives in a very, very rich country and has, apparently, a standard of living so elevated that she is oblivious to any suffering around her and feels that $45 for underwear is fair or reasonable or sensible in any version of reality. If you're going to buy on Etsy, do it because you like the product and you feel good about your purchase. ETSY IS NOT A POLITICAL VENUE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, it's a business, so don't pin your political hopes on it.

@rexnezzy>Wow..talk about taking a comment and running off with it to make assumptions. No political hopes pinned on Etsy here, rest your worried mind. Support your local, and/or independent artists. If that shortchanges a large corporation's bottom line, c'est la vie. I'm not boycotting either, I'm merely saying that to buy from a small company is to know exactly where your money is going, and for me, that's a nice thing. BUT this is all VERY off topic. @ Saroria>Kudos again to you again, for having a vision and for being featured here. I love your work, and your aesthetic. :)

Yeah, I'm really glad to see people be creative and everything, but I take SERIOUS issue with the 'handmade hot air balloon.' Hot air balloons MUST be assembled ONLY by those who know what they are doing and have to strictly adhere to specific FAA standards. You MUST have a private (or commercial) license in order to fly a hot air balloon, you can't just decide to, and those who do choose to make their own hot air balloons go through strenuous training. Etsy, please don't allow things like this to make people think it's alright to break laws and be unsafe to those of us who fly for sport and for a living. It's simply dangerous and careless.

Rock on Sartoria, and keep taking those creative breaks of imagining a physical place where you would love to be (the chrystal domed tree house), and the physical breaks outdoors that allow you to think about your place on this earth with happiness.

Oh yeah, congratulations on "having a vision." Let's give everyone a medal for their incredible whimsy and go frolick in a field of daisies. What's not to get? To be socially accepted in the NYC art scene, you have to come across as avant garde, odd, a "true art spirit". It's part of the whole mystique surrounding talent.. people love to believe in the "magic" of creating art, not in the years of hard work behind it. I could spend hours telling people about how poor I am or that I spent my life savings moving to New York City, that I love to wander and travel and spend all my money searching for myself, etc etc.. really build up that mystique that everyone loves to buy into. Those things are true, but that's not how I learned to make art: I studied under other artists and they passed on their skill. God forbid an artist mention how they really got where they are, it would break the enchantment. The problem only comes when you try to tell the fantasy to your colleagues, when we all know the truth is it takes hard work to make it. Oh, and to get out of your creative ruts? Take a break for a while, then go back to it. BIG MYSTERY SOLVED.

Here's what I don't get, cutestuff-- the transparent striving, the attempt to "come across" as something, 'be odd', or ' a true art spirit.' It just didn't work in the interview. That's what I don't get--the 'trying to be weird,' and even the assumption that 'weird=artist.' You're either weird or you're not, but if you're *trying* for it, you're not. It usually just comes across as an impenetrable facade.

umm. i'm an artist, and i run in many artist circles. people with bfas or mfas from art schools. i have the former, will get the latter. there are lots of people on this site who have studio art or design degrees. in my broad experience, the only people who make up stuff to try to make themselves sound creative are the ones who aren't artists, have no training at all, and usually aren't actually very creative at all. i'm not meaning to talk about anyone specific, this is a general observation from my experience. the belief that 'real' artists make up stuff like that is bunk. there are too many things to talk about and think that actually have meaning. i would laugh my head off at any of my friends if they started spouting that kind of stuff; i'd assume that it was a joke.

shipwreck, i think you're right on. all the artists i know are themselves. if they are 'weird' it's because it's who they are. there were people who could BS in art school (i was never one of them) but they weren't making up out there stuff to try to look weird. that really isn't how it's done in the art world.

Shipwreck, I am with you.. there was a hint of sarcasm in my description. I don't really advocate selling oneself with mystical tales, but I know the reason she did it: because it works. Although I don't doubt this woman's story of meeting yogis, it is ironic they gave her the same business advice that my illustration professor gave me. If you'll excuse me, I'm off to pen an elaborate story of my life and travels.

Just got a look at some of the "artwork" done by some of the critics in here, and all I can suggest, is that maybe a bit of mystical tale telling wouldn't hurt. At the very least, I think that without proof, it's flat out unkind to suggest anyone lies about their life experiences. Some people actually have interesting lives. It happens. And as to how things are actually done in the "art world", I've been part of many different art scenes and have degrees too, and I can tell you for a fact, that many artists create unique personas for themselves, and many artists simply ARE unique. But no one in here has the right to judge anyone else in here so unkindly as many of you have here. All this bashing is just immature.

    TheGypsyTinker says:

But let me put it in a way that some of your critics can relate to, Sartoria. You have currently, in your shop, 5,183 admirers. And in your profile you spin no mystical tales what so ever, you simply make a lovely product, and from the looks of it, you also sell quite a lot of it. Maybe when your critics can claim the same, their opinions will matter more..to all of us.

the artists i know who make any sort of persona for themselves do it as part of their art, not "mystical tale telling." i think a lot of people were amazed that etsy posted this interview without more editing. i wasn't. but lots of people have been trying to discuss this in a relevant manner, not "judging unkindly" or "bashing." saying that people who have posted here who you disagree with have artwork that is trash, however, does fall into the "bashing" category. and telling people that their opinions don't matter because they haven't sold the same number of items as some arbitrarily picked number is just plain stupid. you don't know what they do off etsy, or how successful they really are.

oops, you said the number of people who have hearted a shop. that is an extremely random number to put so much faith in, don't you think? people favorite for a ton of different reasons. by your 'logic,' that would mean that your opinion doesn't matter, either. see? it doesn't make sense at all. btw, we are in the same city. do you show in the art scene here?

    AprilMarieMai says:

i'm sorry, you didn't say that it was trash, you implied that it is not very good by calling it "'artwork'" in quotes, and saying that a 'bit of mystical tale telling" by the sellers who create it "wouldn't hurt," and that's "all [you] can suggest."

April- I'm sorry if my words, or anything you inferred from them, or the quotes that I put them in, offended you or struck a raw nerve etc. etc.. You certainly have a right to your opinions, however thoughtlessly, that I may feel your's, or anyone else's, may have been stated. If you feel mine are as well, then so be it, I didn't mean to target anyone specifically. But I think my point has been made, and this isn't the place for a debate. Certainly not an unfriendly one. What say we let it rest on a positive note instead, and congratulate a fellow artist, who had the good fortune to, unlike us, be featured here?(regardless of how you/we feel about their work) It's the more polite thing to do. Thanks, and again to Sartoria, congratulations. It's clear you work hard. Best of luck to you.

i never said anything negative about her work. i disagreed with what you call "mystical tale telling" as being something that artists do in general, or from necessity. it was not my intention to be rude to you, but rather to point out inconsistencies with your logic. kudos to the featured seller for being featured, and she can say whatever she wants if etsy will post it, i think some people were just surprised and confused at what was said. i am not attempting to have an unfriendly debate. i was just curious if you showed at the galleries, since we are in the same city. i did not think that was a rude thing to ask, as you stated you also have an art degree, but i apologize if i offended you in any way.
