Danielle has been a jewelry collector since she was four years old. Her career in the jewelry business officially started in 2008 when she launched her blog, Gem Gossip, which focuses on jewelry trends, antique and period jewelry, celebrity jewelry, and features exclusive designer interviews. Her hopes for the future include a jewelry line and a book documenting her vast collection.
I work at a jewelry store, and every day I hear the same refrain: “There are just too many engagement rings to choose from, and they’re all so pretty! How could someone pick just one?”
Choosing a ring is tough; it’s the one accessory you’ll be wearing every day of your married life. If you’re overwhelmed by the vast array of choices, don’t fret! Allow me to break down the top five engagement ring trends. Trust me, you’ll love them all.
Halo Style
[Platinum Halo Ring by OroSpot | Shop Halo Rings]
This design features a diamond in the center, surrounded by smaller, full-cut diamonds. It creates the illusion of a bigger diamond, an ode to the illusion setting of the 1940s, except with diamonds rather than more metal or the “boxhead” style.
Split-Shank
[White Topaz Split Shank Ring by Onegarnetgirl | Shop Split Shank Rings]
This style takes any shaped diamond in the center and flanks it with a split-shank band, with or without diamonds. The split in the shank can be subtle or dramatic, depending on its width.
Classic Solitaire
[Classic Solitaire Ring by Ldiamonds | Shop Classic Solitaire Rings]
Just as it reads, one diamond set in a mounting with no other diamonds. There are lots of different looks possible for this timeless and versatile concept: a four-prong setting, six-prong setting, or bezel setting. A round, brilliant cut diamond in a four-prong setting is the ultimate classic. The metals can vary as well: white gold, yellow gold, platinum or even rose gold.
Antique
[1925 Antique Ring from Erstwhilejewelry | Shop Antique Rings]
I consider an antique ring to be anything pre-1940s. (If I wore my grandmother’s ring from the 1950s, I would categorize it as “vintage.”) There are many styles for antique rings, and many are unique, usually set with Old Mine, Old European, or Transitional cuts.
The Art Deco period (1920s-30s) is popular right now. This style is characterized by a white on white look, provided by white gold or platinum with diamonds. Filigree and/or hand-engraving is evident throughout. Choose this style if you truly want a “one of a kind” sort of ring.
Unconventional
[Egyptian Gold Ring by Arosha | Shop Unconventional Rings]
Why be conventional? Embrace a non-diamond gemstone or a ring with a unique shape. Birthstones are great options for an alternative gemstone; most gemstones are less expensive than diamonds, so this could mean more money in your pocketbook at the end of the day. On the other hand, all gemstones are softer than diamonds, so durability can become an issue — after all, you will be wearing this ring every day! Ultimately, if a ring speaks to you and it doesn’t look like a typical engagement ring, there is one one rule above all: it’s your ring, so do what you want. The importance lies in what the ring symbolizes and the memories you create while wearing that sparkler every day.

I have always been in favor of unconventional rings; not only the style but also the gemstone. I would be curious to know how diamonds become the engagement ring stone. My engagement ring has a beautiful fire opal stone and I love it! I would love to see more engagement rings with different gems in the future. I think the trend will change at some point :)

Antique rings are definitely my favorites--they are amazing, intricate works of art, in designs you don't see anymore, each with long histories of love and memories of those lovers before us who chose that same ring. I love that idea--how an antique ring can connect us to long histories of love stories before ours. Lovely post!

♥♥♥ LOVE all of these. Mine is more of an antique syle / unconventional because I have a square halo style ring with a band of round diamonds for my engagement ring and then a lace type wedding band. They didn't come as a set, but I love the antique look it brings to the engagement ring. I like that it's unique. Love that Egyptian ring, what a statement! ♥♥♥

When I was replacing my original engagement ring/wedding band, the girl at the counter at the jewelry store said "You should get whatever you want!" I chose a green amythest ring (with diamonds surrounding it). I don't care if its not "conventional". I LOVE IT. Its a beautiful smoky blue/green that looks almost like a mint color sometimes. I've had it for nearly a year now and when I look at it, it makes me so happy. I'm forever glad that I chose this one. :)

If I were to buy an engagement ring specifically from Etsy, I would look for a ring in a style that couldn't be found in a conventional jewelry store. To me, that is the point of buying from Etsy, to buy unique, clearly artist-made, pieces, whether jewelry, clothing or wall art.

Although exquisite charmers, they are deceptive charmers. Diamonds unfortunately lose value. Prices are artificially set high for a product that is mined in abundance...therefore creating an even greater automatic devaluation right after purchase. Similar to driving the new car off the lot. They are nice to admire but I wouldn't allow my true love to waste his hard earned money on one.

Love how you organized the different types. My husband knew I am a little different and that I would appreciate a vintage/antique ring much more than going to a jewelry store (although we looked at handcrafted ones on here, too!). He ended up choosing an art deco engagement ring from the 1930s and a late 1920s wedding band with little, subtle engravings in it. I couldn't have picked them out any better :) I love them and no one else will ever have the same combination, let alone the same rings, probably.

I'm loving the halo style, but somehow I'm a bit scared of diamonds since you don't know who to trust anymore this days. My hubby bumps my self steem in ways I could never imagine. He wanted me to have a beautiful diamond ring, so he spent a whole month learning of diamonds and all the theories that surround them, it's a very simple design, but with 3 of the biggest diamonds I've ever seen (those kind you just stare at jewelries because there's no way you're going to get a big ring someday, or at least I thought >..<

Beautiful selection of engagement rings:) In here women usually have an ordinary band as a engagement ring and usually the wedding ring is the one ring with bigger diamonds or gemstones in it. My girlfriend has always told me that she want to have a big and "American style" Engagement ring and she wants her wedding band to be more simple. When I proposed my girlfriend last month I wanted to make her a beautiful solitaire ring with diamonds in the band. She has always loved brown Diamonds, so I spend a lot of time finding her just the perfect colored brown diamond in brilliant cut.

I wear a plain vintage sterling silver band as I work construction for half the year. I also have custom made band with a small ruby from an etsy seller that was for my 10 year anniversary. My original wedding ring is a celtic band. My engagement ring was a regular ring that had 2000 in the side with a tiny diamond that we thought was neat. I would like a ring with a vintage cut stone in it just to wear as they are so beautiful. Old engagement rings are works of art.

ScoutingSquirrel says:
I designed my own ... a wishbone shape 'mountain' with a small triangular diamond at the top, I had looked at trilogy rings of three diamonds to represent past, present and future, and my triangular diamond coveres this meaning too. That is flanked by my birthstone, peridot, which will need to be replaced about every ten years but this doesn't bother me, and then sapphires as a manufactured sapphire was part of his first Christmas present to me, bought early and in time for a posh ball he was taking me too and also because the blue and green represents the water and land of our hobby of Scouting and also fits the 'mountain'. The peridots and sapphires are rectangles un the flanks of the wishbone shape. The jeweller had terrible trouble fitting all the stones in to the size of my ring and I therefore know it is unique! It is also very very special to me and gives me plesaure every time it catches my eye. The article, linked above, from theatlantic.com had a few comments relating to 'what does the lady give to the man as her sign of committment', well, I 'borrowed' a favourite landscate photograph of his and commissioned a painting. Not the same monetary value as my ring but very special to him and out on display for both of us to enjoy.

My husband and I were very lucky and got to use three family stones: A center diamond from my great Aunt's engagement ring, and two side diamonds from a ring that belonged to my great grandmother. I feel like I carry his promise of love plus the memory of those two sassy, fantastic women on my hand everywhere I go.

I have never owned a diamond ring. When I was married in 1975 I wanted to be unconventional and actually asked my mother if I could borrow her wedding band for the ceremony. She refused, so we purchased a couple of wide gold bands. My marriage that lasted 26 years, dissolved 10 years ago. Now, I am finally interested in a diamond ring for myself. My dear mother had her 1945 simple engagement diamond reset in the 1960's to a rather gaudy dinner ring setting. She has promised it to me... and is in full agreement that it should be reset into a simpler, deco style.

LaDonna Maddy from GiftsForNow says:
I am going to go with a combination of the split-shank style and an unconventional style. I have been married before, and I want my ring to speak to the uniqueness of my current relationship, not necessarily to what is expected or conventional (after all, the relationship with my fiance has been anything but either of those!). I've never been crazy about diamonds - I find them to be a rather cold stone - but I love opals, particularly fire opals, but they are a soft stone, creating a potential problem since, as the above article points out, I will be wearing the ring everyday. I've finally decided that I am going to keep a diamond as the centerpiece of the ring, but I am going to have small opals on the shank portions of the ring, where they are will be more embedded in the band, thus less likely to fall out.
