This weekend’s Get the Look Decor is inspired by a cabin that’s been transformed into a family home. Nestled comfortably on a one lane road, Becky Dawson’s rural Estacada, Oregon home was originally built in 1940 as a one room fishing cabin. Thanks to a large addition, it blends the original charms of a relaxing retreat with modern day amenities.
For more photos of Becky’s scenic home, visit her on Flickr. Check out her Etsy shop, OneLaneRoad, for handmade apparel, home goods and accessories inspired by her home’s close proximity to Mt. Hood, Oregon’s national forests, rivers and lakes.
Where do you live and with whom?
I live in the land of big lifted trucks and Christmas tree farms, with my husband Shane, our daughter Stella, a big slobbery dog named Louie, a guinea pig named Clementine, and our 3 laying hens, Caesar, Noodle, and Dumplin’. We’re just a hop, skip and a jump from Portland, Oregon. After city dwelling for a number of years, my husband and I both craved the country life. You know the dream: a house with land and a shop, tucked in the woods with a creek nearby; room for a family to grow, and maybe a few chickens and goats? Well, we were lucky enough to make this dream into reality. I love where we live and feel fortunate to call this place home.

Describe your home decorating style.
I decorate with what feels right. It’s all about setting a mood – cozy and comfortable, with little quirky surprises; embracing the cabin in the woods vibe, but with our own twist. My husband and I both enjoy hunting for antiques. Re-purposing is also a huge passion; taking old beat up objects and making them functional and beautiful is such a rewarding feeling. Handmade is huge around here, too. If we can’t make it, we try to buy from someone who did. I’m lucky enough to know some amazing artists amongst family and friends. My mom and grandma are both very talented painters, and they have given me paintings that I proudly display.

Did you decide to decorate in this style or was there an evolution to your decorating process?
It was an evolution. We started out as two broke 20-somethings with an eye for style and a passion to make our home stand out. We didn’t have much, but we were creative with what we had. Moving to the country, becoming homeowners, parents, estate sale junkies, gardeners, and entrepreneurs were all influences.

What inspires you when it comes to decorating?
My parents. I grew up watching them buy, sell, build, remodel, and decorate many lovely homes. They had a knack for thinking outside the box when it came to home design, and I knew from a young age that I wanted to own a place where I could knock down walls if I wanted, paint crazy colors, and make it into what I saw as the ultimate art project.

Where are your favorite places to shop for home items?
I’d say about 80% of our home decor is secondhand: Craigslist, estate sales, thrift stores, curbside free piles. The rest is either handmade, family heirlooms, or good ol’ Ikea.
Does your home hold any strong memories?
Our daughter learned to crawl, walk and talk, all in the three years we’ve lived here. Watching her grow provides some of the strongest memories in our home.

What is your favorite part about your home?
Inside, I love all the knotty pine and stone accents; outside, the wooded setting and the secret swimming hole we have in the summer. Then, of course, there’s the 13 foot tall sculpture in our front yard. There was a very large cedar tree out front that had to come down because it was dying. Cutting it down was such a sad thought, until my husband had this amazing idea: why not put a Bigfoot carving into the stump? I’m pretty sure our neighbors think we’re absolutely nuts, but we love our Bigfoot so much!

good taste~beautiful accents~cozy wonderful home space. Love the photos of your home and how each piece holds a special place..including the tree big foot. I lost two trees to a snow storm here in Eugene and took the largest stumps to make accents in the yard with flowers on top. I couldn't bear to let all of that tree go either. So nice to find someone who is kin to the trees and its surroundings! thanks for the article and thanks for sharing your home!

I looked at this and thought, "welcome to my world". Right down to the record player - I bought one a couple of years ago (reproduction) - on which I play every type of retro music I love. I am lucky enough to live in the tiny seaside community of Town of 1770 in Queensland (the southernmost point of the Great Barrier Reef) where I am surrounded by natural beauty every day and live in a charming Queenslander house (which is made of wood) and where I paint (I belong to a group of four artists who exhibit together under the name ELEMENTS Art. So, just to say it's great to see your style, which is exactly everything that I love and have around me, and that others out there are living the lifestyle. In fact, I'd love to hear from you. I was beginning to think I was a oddity! Have a happy day :-)
