Get the Look isn’t just about real homes; it can also be pure fantasy. This week, guest writer Gabriella Cetrulo curates a set of rooms inspired by kids’ interests.
When I was a little girl, I spent a lot of my time daydreaming and drawing. I didn’t really care all that much about what my teachers were saying; I was more interested in staring out the window, picturing Julie Andrews singing “The Sound of Music” in the softball field. I remember wandering into the woods (where were my teachers?) and singing songs that I made up as I went along. I was a weird kid.
My brother was a totally different story. He was social and well-adjusted from an early age. He excelled at every sport he tried. I remember his bedroom walls were covered in Michael Jordan posters, his shelves were filled with trophies, and he even had a tiny basketball hoop hanging from his door. Meanwhile, my room was filled with fairytale books and costumes.
Looking back, I realize how much our childhood bedrooms reflected and nurtured who we were becoming. I was growing into a creative person while my brother was becoming athletic and popular.
With this in mind, I started to dream up children’s rooms tailored to different interests.

I really like vintage in children's rooms, it makes it look so much more personal . Instead of looking like something out of a Mama's & Papa's showroom! Makes me want to have a baby right now...although I would have to find a decent partner first : )

So, what comes first, the chicken or the egg? Little boys and girls rooms get decorated by their parents initially. The big folk are responsible for priming a kids brain in one direction or the other. It can't be helped, it's natural for parents to want to direct their kids in the direction that must be heavy with wishful thinking. Of course as the kids get older, they pick those roles up themselves and most often slide nicely into them. But what might have happened if those rooms were switched? Would that creative girl now be on a Womens soccer team and her brother a famous artist?? Who wants to try it on their kids?

Thanks for sharing your story. I love the part where you wandered in the woods. I did that, too, but I guess my teachers didn't let me do it at school. Its amazing how our our adult personalities develop when we are little.

You forgot the farm kid! My kids have framed pictures of their sheep, goats, chickens, COW, donkey, pony and lllama all over their bedroom walls along with a donkey crossing sign, poster of all the various breed of waterfowl, and a vintage (looking) metal milk advertisement sign. Outside their window is their sweet cow Daisy Mae. Childhood dream realized. Now if I can get one of them to become a vet.....................

Love the story of two different children and their bedrooms and the selections are great! My room had nothing personal in it since my sister and I kept all our most precious possessions under our beds (a lot of psychology in that). Dad put a Starsky and Hutch poster up on the wall to inject a little personality into it. But I didn't like getting dressed with Starsky and Hutch looking at me. Anyway, I enjoyed this trip down memory lane!

Pamela from ClockworkCrow says:
I had an awesome decorating idea in mind for my 7 year old. The problem? She didn't want it. She didn't want any design at all. So the 70's paneling stays put as well as the mis-matched everything. It's her room, after all. I had no control decor in my room when I was growing up, so my instinct was to give her the pretty room I had dreamed of. Nope. She has the room she wants. I control the rest of the house. (I do make sure it's a clean, un-designed room, though. ; )

Letting kids decorate their room is the one area that they should have complete freedom. Recently my daughter asked for an all white room. We painted EVERYTHING white. When it was done it looked like a isolation ward. But then she stepped in and started filling the walls with art, pictures and inspiration - her version of Pinterest. She created a canvas for all of the things that feed her. Her room is now the most visually interesting.

Michelle and Joanne from MadeWithDreams says:
Really beautiful ideas :) I love the idea of allowing the children freedom to be creative. I think it's great to allow them to be as creative as possible. A friend of mine as a child had a white wall in her room that she was allowed to draw and paint and stick things on and by the time we were teenagers it was a beautiful expression of her growth and development of her artistic side. Lovely.

Playing in the nearby woods was my favourite reccess passtime, building forts and such, until it got knocked down for condos. My childhood rooms were nice but I would of loved any of the 'Artist' or 'Bookworm' finds to perk it up. I didn't have any input into my room growing up, until I was 15. I wanted black walls, but what I got was "fawn" and "country rose"...so I covered as much as I could with posters and my drawings.

Since I'm going to be moving in to a house with my son and his dad, this article is a great inspiration. I like that you included a "champ" section right along with a "bookworm" section. However, at only 3 years old, its sort of hard to make these decisions for my son. And I do like the frame of the article that says kids room ought to nurture who they are, and who they are becoming. I will definitely be using many of your suggestions in my own decorating process. Thank you!

Wonderful ideas .... a child's room is so much a part of growing up. Adding 'vintage' items gives them a sense of history. Mine are all grown and I'm now decorating my granddaughter's room. She's so much like my daughter ( her aunt), its been fun adding "Ya-ya's" things that I hung onto all these yrs. Sadly, I didnt have much left from my childhood room. But of course, I was able to find replacements on Etsy. I love this curate.

kitkat33 from kitkat33 says:
What a cute little room in the picture. I like your ideas. I think the best way is to decorate with accessories the most. Let the child pick his or her favorite color for the walls that you can live with and liven up the room with different kinds of accessories and play things. Anyone remember the commercial for paint for one of the big box stores? One day the kid was into dinosaurs and the room was green, and one day the walls had crazy zebra stripes because he was going through a zebra phase. Kids change a lot as they are growing up. One day this is the coolest thing and next week it isn't. Choosing a favorite wall color is a great way to personalize their room and letting the accessories speak to what they're into at the moment because they can be easily changed when the child moves onto the next phase.

NaviWing from NaviWing says:
Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this. Of course my parents designed my room to a certain extent when I was very small, but I soon took over my own decoration. I chose what went where and how it looked. I was a bookworm, too, and if my mother designed my room with vintage chalkboards and vintage children's illustrations in some attempt to cater to my interests, I wouldn't have liked it at all. That wasn't *my* style for *my* room. It would have creeped me out. I think the key to decorating a child's room is guidance. Listen to them. Understand what they are truly interested in and make it a collaborative effort. Let them know what their boundaries are, and just make it fun.

As a former nanny, a mother and grandmother I truly enjoyed this ... but I agree with NaviWing . After working in very highly decorated baby rooms and watching toddlers as young as three pull them apart and try to "re-decorate", I think choosing a soft color for the walls and a small but varied collection of art , books, and toys to start with, and then letting the child decorate as they age is the best advice I could give. Thank you for adding all of the vintage treasures! New parents should always add some of their favorites to start. (~.~) Ellen

Love it! When I was a child, I has my walls painted a light blue, and has sea animal decals on the walls (my favorite being the seahorse!) My dad painted my dresser (now a nightstand) blue, and my chair. So I basically had to have everything blue, but there were sea animals and flowers too. Interesting how I still want most things in my room to be blue and still have a fascination for seahorses. :)

Children's rooms are so fun to decorate. They are full of such imagination and whimsy and we can change them often because our children change so quickly. A lot of fun finds for kids here!

I just stumbled across your blog and although I'm obviously a little late to this party, I still thought I'd let you know that it was a really cool post! You are so right about childhood rooms inspiring the person we grow-up to be! My wall was one huge mixed media piece! Tiger Beat pictures of Donny Osmand, poems, things I'd drawn; God bless my mom for allowing me such creative range :D Now, I'm an artist who paints furniture & home decor! Lol! Go figure, right? So, you were spot on with this post-at least for me anyway!

Thanks for this, it's so interesting how your room can reflect or effect who you will become. My bedroom facilitated a lot of day dreaming when I was little and my dollhouse was my absolute favourite toy! Some great choices, the artist theme is my favourite!

Super cute! My daughters and I always had so much fun decorating their bedrooms together. They are older now and ready to move out on their own so I miss those days. I love decorating for kids and I love children's artwork. I'm working on a line of children's picture frames right now. Great article!

I love vintage kids stuff, makes me feel like a kid still! I love the chalkboard easel. I think children should have decor to go along with their likes, it inspires them and brings joy through all the ups and downs of childhood.

I just want to add that I can totally relate to your childhood. I was just telling my daughter (an amazing mom) that her 3 yr. old daughter has more poise and social skills than I had at age 40.

My room was color blocked in 1993 with blue, pink, green, and yellow (one wall each). These days I live in a house with green cupboards agains orange walls, a Mediterranean blue wall to the left with a spiraling sunset colored painting mounted on it, one pink bathroom, and a yellow rectangle for hanging children's art in the living room. Today I wore chartreuse boots, blue tights, a grey dress, and a red purse. Yep. My childhood bedroom totally reflected who I would mature into. I can relate.

There was a lot of white chipboard furniture in my room which I shared with my sister which inevitably got decorated with stickers and posters of pop stars- our parents let us do what we wanted and we regularly re decorated the walls according to who was in the top 10 in the charts :)

Prayer Notes by Cynthia from PrayerNotes says:
My room was filled with French Provincial (faux) furniture, with a beautiful canopied bed--white billowy sheers and butterfly finishings. And, I had a white wooden ceiling fan! I loved my room and it reflects who I am today, except I have moved on to a more traditional dark mahogany. This brings back wonderful memories of my childhood....

Love this post. My room was filled with rainbows, unicorns, and my drawings on the walls. I don't think my parents liked the crayon on the walls very much, but it didn't stop me. Looking back, it definitely was the beginning of telling my story.
