This weekend’s Get the Look Decor is inspired by the retro center city apartment of Katja Steinmetzer. This West German pottery obsessed cat lady lives in Brussels, Belgium, with her cats June, Watson, Flo and Wally.
Katja is living proof that you don’t need tons of money to have the home of your dreams. For more decorating inspiration and tips on supporting a vintage addiction on a shoestring budget, check out her blog, Fat Cat. Visit her on Flickr for even more photos of her colorful, plant-filled home.

Describe your home decorating style.
I wish I could say my decorating style was mid-century modern, which, in my mind, conjures up images of sleek, monochrome and minimal interiors. However, with my love for stuff and colour, eclectic retro is probably a much better description. I love vintage mid-century furniture and accessories, and I mix everything up with Ikea buys, African objects, real antiquities and lots of greenery.

Did you decide to decorate in this style or was there an evolution to your decorating process?
I’ve been living in my home for 7 years now and there’s been a definite move away from my student day decor — bright yellow and orange walls, Ikea furniture, and ethnic accessories — to a more homogeneous vintage decor. Although I still love pops of colour — my collection of red fat lava vases being a case in point — I’ve now moved on to a more neutral background: white, grey and black walls, and wooden furniture.

Where are your favorite places to shop for home items?
There’s really mainly just one: eBay ! I’m a total addict. I mean, having 24/7 access to a worldwide flea market — what’s not to love? Of course, I also enjoy strolling through real life flea markets, but here in Brussels, these mostly take place on Sunday mornings — not really compatible with a leisurely lie in.
And one of the reasons why I enjoy travelling to the UK so much is to visit the fabulous antiques centres and car boot sales. I always come back with a souvenir.

What inspires you when it comes to decorating?
Blogs like The Brick House and Door Sixteen have been real eye openers when it comes to personalizing my home on a limited budget.
What is your favorite part about your home?
I especially love that my numerous collections are on display everywhere.
Does your home hold any strong memories?
My home is more a constant source of happiness. And I’m very grateful to have a place where I get to express myself, do the things I really love — such as DIY-ing, cooking, gardening and blogging — and have fun with my kitties and friends.

Exquisite spaces. But really: "Where are your favorite places to shop for home items? There’s really mainly just one: eBay ! I’m a total addict. I mean, having 24/7 access to a worldwide flea market — what’s not to love?" Ummm, Etsy interviewed you and not a token nod to a far superior, better curated venue for vintage objects? Last time I looked Etsy was global & 24/7. Strange.

We're downsizing (getting old and can't do stairs--ha) and have given away much to the kiddos. So we're starting from scratch almost. I love these posts that show me how to work with vintage--which is what WE plan to do, being postwar babies who love the look of what we grew up with. Plus, it's "green" to reuse, which is something we like, having come of age in the Sixties. I'm learning so much from people who seem to have a natural talent for grouping collections and colors, and finding things of use--not just junk and clutter. These posts are wonderful!

I just realised the huge ugly vase which houses my umbrellas is appealing to many and the West German label I peeled off perhaps should have stayed on there. It was purchased in a local charity shop...hmmm may just sell, although it is so large and heavy the postage would be very high. Great post.

I love your style, Katja! I'm about to be a homeowner and I have been laying awake every night unable to sleep, thinking of all the ways I will re purpose my less-than-inspiring furniture and finally create the home I've always wanted. My favorite place to look for inspiration is "The Apartment Book" that was put out by the editors of Apartment Life magazine in the 70s. So much fun! Glad I read this interview!

Nice apartment and I can totally understand why the admins chose her to interview even though she only shops ebay (shocker with all the fantastic retro/vintage/antique right here on etsy), "I’ve now moved on to a more neutral background: white, grey and black walls, and wooden furniture." It seems that etsy admin will love just about anything if it's a neutral color.

Penelope Neil from StarTribe says:
I actually thought this was a Melbourne apartment, since mid-century and West German pottery is pretty much the style signature of almost everyone who lives here! Not to downplay it (it's my favorite style as well, if you add in some tribal) but it's not something I'm used to seeing outside of Australia. Thusly I can't see it as a budget style- the national madness for mid mod has meant anything remotely 50s-70s looking is hellishly expensive. One more thing- ebay addict? Ouch! I find Etsy to be a much better place to shop for vintage. Shipping is more reasonable (important when you live overseas from everyone else), images are better, descriptions are more honest and you don't get sniped at the last minute. Much more civilized. Granted it's harder to get a bargain because everyone knows the value of what they have, but at least it's easier to find all the fat lava when everyone selling it tags it as such!

No usually a fan of grey walls, but the teak against the dark grey wall beside a white wall looks very sharp. I love 60s teak furniture, but the prices are getting high, even Kijjiji and Craigslist sellers ask a lot. Hard to imagine someone on a strict budget being able to afford one of the wall shelving units unless you are very lucky.

My husband and I have managed to outfit our place without paying more than $100 for anything in here, except for our exquisite reupholstered 1940's couch that was purchased from an upholsterer who had redone the piece for her own house using stunning raspberry striped velvet. A steal for $400! Other than that, we've spent nights and weekends scouring flea markets, craigslist, and free piles for all of our belongings and refinishing anything that had great bones but looked sad. What we can't find, we build. It's pretty fantastic knowing the history of every single thing in your house, and knowing that nothing is disposable. What we grow out of will get passed along to someone else and the search for a replacement will start again. It's been over a decade since I walked into an anonymous box store to purchase furniture and I doubt I'll ever go back.
