Get the Look isn’t just about real homes; it can also be pure fantasy. This week, guest writer Gabriella Cetrulo curates a set of rooms inspired by faraway destinations.

Two summers ago, I went on a road trip from New York to San Francisco and back. I remember feeling pretty shell-shocked; I had always been a homebody and hadn’t traveled much before. Until then, the desert was practically fiction to me. Over the course of a few weeks, I drove through desert and mountain ranges, all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Reminiscing about this trip inspired me to find and create rooms that reflect the various landscapes I encountered in my travels.

On Some Faraway Beach

[1. Starfish pillow from Earthlab 2. Coral branch from Gallivantinggirls 3. Bubble chandelier from Pelleshop 4. Rattan table from Hausproud 5. Nautical doormat from Karensropework 6. Striped vase from Carriageoakcottage]

This bedroom’s cool color palette, along with its playful ocean motifs, almost recreates the feeling of swimming at my favorite beach.

A Snow-Capped Mountain

[1. Forest Glen wallscape from Thebenttreegallery 2. Tree stencil from Oliveleafstencils 3. Alder chunk light pair from Anzfer 4. Vintage log footstool from Scottieinacanoe 5. Faux polar bear rug from Fringecollection]

The addition of subtle earthy pieces brings warmth to this icy space. And it never hurts to add some plush faux fur accents.

Way Out West

[1. Gold triangle cow skull from Skyparlor 2. Vintage metal fan from Cobbleandjot 3. Vintage longhorn pot from Littlebyrdvintage 4. Kilim style pillow from Oceanswept 5. Ponderosa Sofa from Happychair 6. Southwestern throw rug from Pineandmain]

For me, nothing says “desert” as simply as the color of sand. A mixture of warm muted tones, Western-inspired geometric patterns and natural textures completes the effect.

The Tropics

[1. Vintage wooden cheetah from Reneevintage 2. Peacock embroidered pillow from Organicshinesociety 3. Hand-woven striped pillow from Orgaincshinesociety 4. Rainbow air plant from Earthseawarrior 5. Mid-century couch from Threewheelvintage 6. T-shirt rug from Talkingsquid]

Elvis Presley’s “Jungle Room” may not have been in the best taste, but I certainly admire the man’s vision. He took this theme from floor to ceiling, incorporating dark wooden furniture, a mossy green rug, and lots (and I mean lots) of houseplants.
